Can someone simplify this for me? Looking at a RGT42BO online and asked teh guy what tremelo it has on it...His response was "The trem is an Ibanez Low TRS licenced by Floyd Rose"
Does this mean its a piece of crap? where does it rank in the list of Ibanez trems?
Hi man, Great vid. I have a Jem555 with the dreaded lo trs II. I'm guessing if your Gotoh swapped with your trs, then the Gotoh should swap on my jem!!! What do you like? Cheers Dude...
does anybody hav any idea if an Original Floyd Rose would be a good replacement with the Edge III cause ive been wanting to get rid of this thing in my Ibanez RG4EXQM1 so i can finally do dive bombs and not worry about my strings going out of tune
You have convinced me.. i have a ibanez i dont use with an edge 3 tremolo and honestly. its really bad.. always had problems with it since purchase day.. im sure this new gotoh is going to make a world of difference once i have the money to afford one.
Thank you, this video is really useful as I have found an old JS100 with Lo-TRS II and I was considering the Gotoh floyd. By the way, have you been able to reinstall the trem cover on the back? I have read that the Gotoh spring block is longer than the TRS one, and comes out too far. This is why many players leave their trem cavities open.
Did you experience the same problem? Is it possible to find a shorter block for the Gotoh and replace it?
@vi70h12 I wanted to experiment and do something different. I would have just bought a JS1000 to get that trem (which I still might do...I'm really digging the JS100 so a 1000 must really kick ass!)
hi, just one question. Did you have problems using the stock pivots/stubs instead the white bigger? cause I'll have the same problem replacing a trs floyd with a original one ... and, if it doesn't work bad, I think I won't enlarge the holes like you did
@BomaMetalhead It seemed like there was a tiny bit of tuning instability with the stock studs. Barely noticeable but enough for me to have a real luthier install the gotoh studs for me.

Hope you can help me with something. I have a Licensed Tremolo with a 34 mm block and I'm thinking about change it for a Schaller Floyd Rose with a 42 mm block.

@dariwsh Thank you. This is through a hughes & kettner switchblade 100 combo with a tc electronic g force in the effects line. Both products = superb. I'll be putting the amp and possibly the g-force up on ebay next week to pay for some other gear i'm getting.
hey! nice vid! just wondeing 'bout the pick ups, are does the original ones or u changed them? it sounds awesome man! thanks for the advice on the trem! (:
@EricVera539 Thanks! It's a paf joe in the bridge. Wonderful pickup and much better than the Fred in my opinion. The fred has some great harmonics, but it is so odd sounding that it is hard to get used to. the paf joe is much lower output but has a more traditional tone. Would be great for anything other than super heavy stuff.
@99voltsdotcom hi! thanks for the info 'cause im about to buy one JS100, and i want a good sound on it, anyway, i was wondering wich pickup do u recomend me in the neck?... i'd appreciate it a lot, if u do so.
Why did you replace the posts? Would you recommend changing them and rerouting or do you recommend going with stock posts? Very curious because I am going to change my JS100 to this trem.
@tblues01 I replaced them because you could see the blades on the gotoh were too large for the smaller angled cut outs on the stock posts. It felt like I was getting a little binding going on and didn't want to ruin the blades on the gotoh trem. If you change the posts you will have to reroute the cut out on the top of the body as the saddle screws will now be too long to fit inside the route. It is a cheapo js100, I probably would not have attempted on a 1000.
@fastfirenick that is a hughes & kettner switchblade 100 combo amp with a tc electronic g-force effects unit. the g-force is an amazing box. That said, I now use an axefx ultra for amp and effects and it surpasses the tc unit by light years.
@hatehomework In this video it fit fine. I have since changed the posts to the gotoh posts and that made the hex bolts on the back hit the body when I would pull up. I had to manually route out some wood to make the cavity bigger.
@rafasimon24 Originlly it was just the bridge and springs. I have since replaced the posts. Turned into a major operation as I had to reroute the recessed cutout to keep the bridge floating.
That JS is beautiful! I think you should of took the guitar to a luthier and had the posts replaced. The black old ones look like they were zinc, while the new ones were hardened steel.
I had a Jem with an edge pro and another g&l with the Gotoh and I actually preferred the Gotoh. I was more fun. Like the difference between riding a low rollercoaster vs a high rollercoaster.
@jaym1834 Thanks! It is a hughes & kettner switchblade combo with a h&k tubefactor pedal in front. The switchblade is a GREAT amp...100 W all tube with onboard effects. Can do a million different sounds with the click of 1 button. This is what the line 6 folks are trying to do, but this is an actual amp and not modeling. That said, I now use an AxeFx Ultra.
I've found a Js100 in red(same as yours) on my local classifieds and I had wanted to get one and put it the gotoh but it seem the guy who is selling it has put in a genuine original floyd rose. Do you this is a good trem to have or should I take that out and put in the gotoh anyway? I could put in the OFR in an other guitar..
@EricMaldonadoMusic the floyd will be WAY better than the original ibanez low trs II. Some people prefer an original floyd. Play it for a while and see what you think.
@silverjack18 k i told you that a gotoh should fit into the edge pro route. but im not sure of that anymore. i think you might have to dremmel sand maybe 1 or 2 mm, at the back of the cavity. but im not sure. btw, i dont think you will have to replace the edge pro anchors, cause im almost positive that the edge pro and gotoh ones have the same v shape where the knife edges are in contact with. but the best thing would be to buy one and see if it works, if not return it i guess.
@metalterminator1 with the ibz studs it fits (barely.) if you replace the studs (which I have now done) you will have to route the very end of the trem cutout. The gotoh studs are larger so the contact points are a touch farther back on the guitar. I'll be doing a video soon of the difference.
@99voltsdotcom ya. well ive been doing research, and on my RG350dx, with the edge 3 trem, aparently i wont even have to replace the studs, because they have the same v shape as the gotoh ones, but i may still need to sand the back of the cavity. Only by about 1-2 mm, or so. but i told this guy before that the gotoh should drop right into the edge pro route(which is the same shape as the edge 3 route), but that he may have to sand the back of the cavitiy a tad.
This is such an easy video to follow! I have the very same red JS-100 and want to exchange units, but I'm getting a bit confused when placing the online order. There are quite a few models to choose from. Would you share what model you installed? Thanks in advance for all the info. Can't wait to get started on the project!
Great video exactly what I have ben looking for. I have a lo-trs 2 on an iceman that I want to replace I have been trying to find info on how well made the gotoh floyd roses are. I am assuming that a low profile gotoh trem would be a good if not better fit considering the lo-trs 2 is a low profile style floyd rose.
hey thanks for this video it been very helpful! could you tell me what the tuning was like before and after the trem change? and does stay in tune well now?
@danielwrightguitar before = iffy. now = much, much better...almost perfect. I didn't change the posts, so they bind on the gotoh blades a tiny bit. I just got back from vacation and left my js with a guy to redo the studs to the gotoh ones. i'll report back when i get it back from him.
@silverjack18 no problem. dont quote me on any of that, but if you want a concret answer, i recomend you get a jemsite account if you dont have one already. then search up edge 3 replacement on google, there is a lot of information on the edge pro there, and contact jemsite user nuno, as he is the expert on replacing ibanez trems. he should tell you what can fit. my guess is that he will say a OFR, and gotoh should fit, but he will be able to tell you what will and wont fit.
@silverjack18 well the edge pro is a direct replacement for the edge3 trem, and from what ive gathered from jemsite users, the gotoh is a replacement for the edge 3 trem. so in theroy the gotoh should fit right into the edge pro cavity. since yours is a prestige, i know that cnc tolerences are much lower than that of a regular ibanez. and OFR will fit, and im certain a gotoh is the same dimensions as the OFR. there is gotoh dimensions on allparts.com, just you will have to find the gotoh.
My JS has a different trem than yours, totally.I have a USA Stratocaster Original Floyd Rose Series with a PAF Pro Di Marzio at the bridge and this thing on my JS is not even close to my Rose on my strat. You can jump on it and you cant make it go out of tune. This Ibanez trem is junk, they should do a recall on them.Satriani should be pissed after putting his name on it.Any suggestions?
@metalterminator1 Mine is an older S series from like the 90's (basically what Herman Li used in the music vid for Through The Fire and Flames only blue) and it has a Lo-TRS II
Did the longer block give you any problems with pull-ups? I see you didn't put the back cover on(was there one to begin with? idk). Anyways, enjoyed the vid. My new build is getting a Gotoh as long as I don't find reason to believe the block will touch my back plate when I yank a harmonic skyhigh.
@99voltsdotcom No.. too late. I went a different route for my new Lic. Floyd. I found a NOS Kahler Killer 2700 for $50. Bought that instead. Peavey Nitros used to use them as well as a bunch of other 80's guitars. Almost 2 lbs of pure hardened steel. It is the LOWEST Floyd I've ever seen. SCORE! Maybe a Gotoh on my next build..... The new Floyds are crap. Won't be doing that EVER. Not until Fender sells the Floyd name and responsibility to someone with better standards. Gotohs are well made. =)
@bedofrazorsqwerty i agree, OFR is going the trail of other major manufactors (gibson, marshall) quality is going down, but prices are going up. wtf?. gotoh is the way to go.
@metalterminator1 I just had a little email conversation with Kahler about their fulcrum trems maybe coming back since Floyd Patents are going going gone.
And I quote: We are in the ending stages of R&D for our new fulcrum bridge that is scheduled to come out in approx 6 months that will blow away anything ever seen in the Tremolo business.. Keep an eye out and thank you for rockin with us.
I had such a serious case of GAS I freakin passed out and my reply email looked like thisdwhiudhwidpuqH
@bedofrazorsqwerty wow! i might just wait the six months to replace my edge 3 bridge in my rg350dx. i was going to replace it with a gotoh, but i might just have to wait. thats quite the message they sent you. oh what do you mean when the floyd patents are going going gone? that you dont have to pay for a licence anymore? cause in pretty sure that the original edge and lo pro edge (ibanez/gotoh, gotoh makes the high end ibanez trems) dont even have the licenced under floyd patents written on it.
@metalterminator1 Yeah most Floyd patents have run out, I can't remember which feature still has a valid patent, but it's on it's way as well. That's why OFRs are so cheap now. So the competition doesn't eat Fender's lunch. You can get them for 170 brand new, but the quality is going down the shitter.
Side note: I started a thread on my cool-guy forum about the new Kahlers. Supposed to be a ball bearing design, but better than the new Ibanez trems. I cannot wait. I get to build me another V!! =)
@bedofrazorsqwerty did the guy say if they'd be expensive (under $200)? but to be $170 is still pretty expensive. oh give me the link to your thread. about OFR quality, my guitar teacher was replacing his strings about six months ago, and he told me that he was tightening his low e, and the string lock screw broke inside the saddle! not an expensice fix, probably only $20 for a new saddle with string lock, but still. come on, your paying well over $1000 for a guitar, there shouldn't be problems.
@bedofrazorsqwerty people say that their guitar from the 80's with OFR is still working flawlessly, but i dont thats the case with present day OFR guitars. ball bearings are good. the ibanez zr is soooo smooth and amazing. too bad they are not easily replaceable, and cannot replace other trems cause they use 3/16 inch stud spacing, not the standard 27/8 inch. ans the zps system needs a lot of wood routed away, and the zr sustain block is this tiny little piece of shit. hope the kahlers are good!
@bedofrazorsqwerty acctually im considering getting a ibanez s import cause at the moment i have a fixed bridge ibanez s for standard tuning, and i need a guitar for standard with a floating trem. ibanez s is cheap (about $500), stock bridge is amazing(zr), 24 frets, wizard 2 neck(love them). but the main reason is cause its cheap, but the bridge is very good quality. people say that the new 2010 zr's have an improved arm holder design compaired to the 2009 and older zr's. cant wait.
Great video! You have answered all my thoughts on this conversion. I've had a JS100 for years but never played it much because of the trem. I'm definitely going to go for this conversion - thanks a lot!
Note: I think I'll change the posts as well though ....
@Golchen yes I should have changed the posts...the gotoh is binding a little bit on the old posts and has micro tuning problems. I'm going to have my buddy do that as that is more tricky than i want to try.
@99voltsdotcom WARNING!!! well, I got the Gotoh, but my JS100 ain't like yours! needs extra routing to fit - both one side and also at the end. Also mine has less wood available for the bigger post holes. Was going to have a go myself but I've thrown it to a pro now. Note" The Gotoh posts are beautifully engineered compared to the originals!
@metalterminator1 the notches in the original posts are smaller that the gotoh replacements so the tuning sometimes is off by a hair when the trem comes back to flush because the knife edges don't have totally free movoment. i just dropped it off today to have the posts replaced.
just wondering, will this stay in tune through extensive playing?? as some of the problems that my friends have had with tuning has put me off floating trems, but this has had me curious
Thanks for the very nice, informative post! I recently purchased a JS100 and I too like the guitar very much but not very impressed with the low TRS trem. May I ask what pickups you are using? They don't sound anything like mine! :)
@DFootprints thank you...the gotoh is a WAY better trem. well worth the switch. the bridge is a paf joe and neck is...oh crap I forget what's in the neck. it's a replacement as well. Been VERY happy with the paf joe...frequency and tone is much better than the fred. bought it with the replacement p/u's already installed.
@99voltsdotcom hey, great video and that guitar sounds amazing!! What amp are you using? I read that you are using a paf joe bridge humbucker. I think I'm going to buy the same guitar and replace the pickups also. But the new JS100 has a Edge III bridge so maybe it's better. But is you neck pickup a paf pro? It really looks like it.
@DFootprints I know the bridge is a PAF Joe, but I forget what's in the neck (I bought it with the pup's already replaced.) I really like the paf joe...much more balanced tone than a fred.
Nice vid! If I were you, I'd eventually replace the trem anchor posts mainly for one huge reason. With the Gotoh's, the anchor studs are locking as well. This makes a HUGE difference with tuning stability. Maybe by now you've noticed it. Redrilling the anchor posts is very basic and you have enough wood surrounding your stud bushings to ensure you won't get any wood chipping off....Did the entire thing (anchor studs and all) to my future son-in-laws Jackson.
i you like that gotoh you need to try there newest version. it is called a GE1996TC, everything is the same except for the way the tremolo arm attaches to the base. it has collars that fit around the arm. the version here is great but after a while the plasic bushions wear out. this new one is the same tremolo that is on the ernie ball music man axis. i love it. its on ebay itme number 190375189235
great video, but i have a couple of questions. i going to buy a js100 but after watching your video i want to replace the stock tremolo. I cant see the tremolo unit box details in your video. what r the measurements? So many tremolo sizes out the their. some asked for the nut size? I just want to buy the right tremolo, plz reply
@fandradejs100 make sure you are viewing in 720 and pause the frame where the box is visible. it was ebay auction # 350323330613. I did not replace the nut so i was not too worried about the nut size.
@99voltsdotcom yeah i tried watching it on 720hd but couldnt see well enough on the smaller details. im not replacing the nut, but thats what some website that sell gotoh ask for. i guess depending on the nut size they can determine what bridge will fit. I've done my homework and hope all goes well like your video.
Thanks for making this video! This maybe a not too expensive solution for me to change the pour LOW TRS II that came with my JEM555 with the better Gotoh tremolo (any idea if this will fit?).
Could you give some more type-related details about the Gotoh unit? Since there are several types. Are you sure the posts have identical threads?
@ddimibb I do not know if it will fit, but it should. I would think most of the ibanez routes are similar. the post on my guitar and the gotoh did not have similar threads. good luck!
Thanks 99voltsdotcom. This is exactly the info I needed. Very informative. Right now I have a Floyd Rose Pro, which I really like, but the looseness of the arm is unacceptable. I'm going to get the Gotoh FR. I understand that the fine tuners don't get in the way as much as an original FR (the reason I switched to a Pro in the first place). Great tone too. I'm going to check out the H & K Switchblade. I have an old H & K Tubeman Plus which is brilliant for recording.
@2BLogical cool, thanks. the switchblade is a GREAT amp. All tube, 4 channel with built in effects. 128 programmable presets so you can go from super clean to very heavy with effects with the click of 1 button on the pedal board. It's what line 6 has been trying to accomplish for 10 years, but witha real amp.

Hey man, Awesome vid! really enjoyed it and is very helpfull advice. what type of amp are you playing through because it sounds really good :)
jaym1834 1 year ago
@jaym1834 Thanks! It is a hughes & kettner switchblade combo with a h&k tubefactor pedal in front. The switchblade is a GREAT amp...100 W all tube with onboard effects. Can do a million different sounds with the click of 1 button. This is what the line 6 folks are trying to do, but this is an actual amp and not modeling. That said, I now use an AxeFx Ultra.

@99voltsdotcom awesome i thought it might have been a marshall jvm. but hughes & kettner amps have always been amazing amps.

EricMaldonadoMusic 1 year ago
@EricMaldonadoMusic the floyd will be WAY better than the original ibanez low trs II. Some people prefer an original floyd. Play it for a while and see what you think.

99voltsdotcom 1 year ago
@silverjack18 k i told you that a gotoh should fit into the edge pro route. but im not sure of that anymore. i think you might have to dremmel sand maybe 1 or 2 mm, at the back of the cavity. but im not sure. btw, i dont think you will have to replace the edge pro anchors, cause im almost positive that the edge pro and gotoh ones have the same v shape where the knife edges are in contact with. but the best thing would be to buy one and see if it works, if not return it i guess.
metalterminator1 1 year ago
@metalterminator1 with the ibz studs it fits (barely.) if you replace the studs (which I have now done) you will have to route the very end of the trem cutout. The gotoh studs are larger so the contact points are a touch farther back on the guitar. I'll be doing a video soon of the difference.
99voltsdotcom 1 year ago
@99voltsdotcom ya. well ive been doing research, and on my RG350dx, with the edge 3 trem, aparently i wont even have to replace the studs, because they have the same v shape as the gotoh ones, but i may still need to sand the back of the cavity. Only by about 1-2 mm, or so. but i told this guy before that the gotoh should drop right into the edge pro route(which is the same shape as the edge 3 route), but that he may have to sand the back of the cavitiy a tad.

@danielwrightguitar before = iffy. now = much, much better...almost perfect. I didn't change the posts, so they bind on the gotoh blades a tiny bit. I just got back from vacation and left my js with a guy to redo the studs to the gotoh ones. i'll report back when i get it back from him.

danielwrightguitar 1 year ago
hey 99volts, what is your stud spacing? 27/8 of an inch?
metalterminator1 1 year ago
@silverjack18 no problem. dont quote me on any of that, but if you want a concret answer, i recomend you get a jemsite account if you dont have one already. then search up edge 3 replacement on google, there is a lot of information on the edge pro there, and contact jemsite user nuno, as he is the expert on replacing ibanez trems. he should tell you what can fit. my guess is that he will say a OFR, and gotoh should fit, but he will be able to tell you what will and wont fit.
metalterminator1 1 year ago
@silverjack18 well the edge pro is a direct replacement for the edge3 trem, and from what ive gathered from jemsite users, the gotoh is a replacement for the edge 3 trem. so in theroy the gotoh should fit right into the edge pro cavity. since yours is a prestige, i know that cnc tolerences are much lower than that of a regular ibanez. and OFR will fit, and im certain a gotoh is the same dimensions as the OFR. there is gotoh dimensions on allparts.com, just you will have to find the gotoh.

Did the longer block give you any problems with pull-ups? I see you didn't put the back cover on(was there one to begin with? idk). Anyways, enjoyed the vid. My new build is getting a Gotoh as long as I don't find reason to believe the block will touch my back plate when I yank a harmonic skyhigh.
bedofrazorsqwerty 1 year ago
@bedofrazorsqwerty pull ups are fine...no probs. i always leave the back plate off for easy adjustments to the springs.
99voltsdotcom 1 year ago
bedofrazorsqwerty 1 year ago
@bedofrazorsqwerty i agree, OFR is going the trail of other major manufactors (gibson, marshall) quality is going down, but prices are going up. wtf?. gotoh is the way to go.
metalterminator1 1 year ago
@metalterminator1 I just had a little email conversation with Kahler about their fulcrum trems maybe coming back since Floyd Patents are going going gone.
And I quote: We are in the ending stages of R&D for our new fulcrum bridge that is scheduled to come out in approx 6 months that will blow away anything ever seen in the Tremolo business.. Keep an eye out and thank you for rockin with us.
I had such a serious case of GAS I freakin passed out and my reply email looked like thisdwhiudhwidpuqH
bedofrazorsqwerty 1 year ago
@bedofrazorsqwerty wow! i might just wait the six months to replace my edge 3 bridge in my rg350dx. i was going to replace it with a gotoh, but i might just have to wait. thats quite the message they sent you. oh what do you mean when the floyd patents are going going gone? that you dont have to pay for a licence anymore? cause in pretty sure that the original edge and lo pro edge (ibanez/gotoh, gotoh makes the high end ibanez trems) dont even have the licenced under floyd patents written on it.
metalterminator1 1 year ago
@metalterminator1 Yeah most Floyd patents have run out, I can't remember which feature still has a valid patent, but it's on it's way as well. That's why OFRs are so cheap now. So the competition doesn't eat Fender's lunch. You can get them for 170 brand new, but the quality is going down the shitter.
Side note: I started a thread on my cool-guy forum about the new Kahlers. Supposed to be a ball bearing design, but better than the new Ibanez trems. I cannot wait. I get to build me another V!! =)
bedofrazorsqwerty 1 year ago
@bedofrazorsqwerty did the guy say if they'd be expensive (under $200)? but to be $170 is still pretty expensive. oh give me the link to your thread. about OFR quality, my guitar teacher was replacing his strings about six months ago, and he told me that he was tightening his low e, and the string lock screw broke inside the saddle! not an expensice fix, probably only $20 for a new saddle with string lock, but still. come on, your paying well over $1000 for a guitar, there shouldn't be problems.
metalterminator1 1 year ago
@bedofrazorsqwerty people say that their guitar from the 80's with OFR is still working flawlessly, but i dont thats the case with present day OFR guitars. ball bearings are good. the ibanez zr is soooo smooth and amazing. too bad they are not easily replaceable, and cannot replace other trems cause they use 3/16 inch stud spacing, not the standard 27/8 inch. ans the zps system needs a lot of wood routed away, and the zr sustain block is this tiny little piece of shit. hope the kahlers are good!
metalterminator1 1 year ago

Golchen 1 year ago
@Golchen yes I should have changed the posts...the gotoh is binding a little bit on the old posts and has micro tuning problems. I'm going to have my buddy do that as that is more tricky than i want to try.
99voltsdotcom 1 year ago
@99voltsdotcom WARNING!!! well, I got the Gotoh, but my JS100 ain't like yours! needs extra routing to fit - both one side and also at the end. Also mine has less wood available for the bigger post holes. Was going to have a go myself but I've thrown it to a pro now. Note" The Gotoh posts are beautifully engineered compared to the originals!

99voltsdotcom 1 year ago
@99voltsdotcom what do you mean by binding? that the knife edge's are digging into the anchors? cause that would cause big tuning problems over time.
metalterminator1 1 year ago
@metalterminator1 the notches in the original posts are smaller that the gotoh replacements so the tuning sometimes is off by a hair when the trem comes back to flush because the knife edges don't have totally free movoment. i just dropped it off today to have the posts replaced.

Thanks for the very nice, informative post! I recently purchased a JS100 and I too like the guitar very much but not very impressed with the low TRS trem. May I ask what pickups you are using? They don't sound anything like mine! :)
DFootprints 1 year ago

99voltsdotcom 1 year ago

Thanks 99voltsdotcom. This is exactly the info I needed. Very informative. Right now I have a Floyd Rose Pro, which I really like, but the looseness of the arm is unacceptable.
