  • I like a lot this aria with this tone. It's amazing and fantastic!!!

  • Elena is very good, but caballe is slightly better. Elena breaks the high note takes a breath and then goes on. Caballe did in one breath what everybody else do in two. Listen to caballe before u make a final judgement. Elena is as good as callas and Sutherland and dessi.

  • @Milahi1935 Caballe soprano ..not dramatico soprano. Obraztsova -mezzo.

  • Genius!!!!!

  • my god... the passion is overwhelming....

usually passion shown like that is contrived... but this woman is living the piece with every breath!

  • this is simply perfection!

  • Great!

  • BRAVO!!!Perfect !!!

  • This is an example when a mezzo try to sing a soprano role.Even if in the hight notes they can achieve them , we see how havy is the performance and how dark is the all piece, because the liryc rules are the same for all the liryc singers, BUT they are adjustments and specifics ways for example to prononce the consonants and vowells, etc, etc, that make the soprano tone-even dramatics ones - more bright. The dream of many mezzos is to be sopranos in concerts and mezzos in opera. We pay attention|

  • I've never heard a true mezzo try this before (that excludes Verrett and Bumbry, mezzos w a soprano extension who did soprano parts thru most of their careers). It was a bit too much for her in the B-flat and the downward passage following but I give her credit for attempting it. Except for those few notes it was quite effective. Her voice was really huge. Nice post.

  • this just trikes me. it's beyond. only callas can compete.

  • Honnan szedted ezt? Én 17 voltam mikor először volt Carmen amit láthattam... Is this a full cocert or just a joke?

  • Others have more beautiful voices, Obraztsova is a bit crude and wobbly sometimes, but what spectacular musicality! I've heard that she is one of the most musically gifted of all opera singers, and perhaps the most musical loving of them all. I am not surprised, look at her face when she has sung Dalila in the Tokyo concert! She IS MUSIC...

  • bravissimo !!

  • Love her voice and her interpretation !

  • mi ricordo questo concerto,era sublime,insuperabile ! Grazie Obraztsova !

  • Glorious voice, slight problem with the breathing, although live performances sometimes tend to do this to singers, epecially with all of the adrenilin working.

Leontine Price's interpretation is also awesome although she lets her voice do all of the dramatic effects.

  • I agree with everybody else here who has commented. She is amazing, however I prefer her singing when she is in the mezzo fach, where she should be. But, I really must say, she sang this very very well!

  • My name is Bjørn-Erik Ulvatne from Norway. We was so lucky to have her this summer for our "Summer academy". She had some masterclasses. A true artist she is! Really amazing voice and voice mastering!

  • Elena, how great you are! I love you so much. Your rich, dark, warm and beautiful voice and astonishing vibrato and fantastic expression are wonderful! You are so dramatic. I cried when I saw your Santuzza, in Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana is great. WOW! I'm speechless! How I'd like to see you live!

  • She is amazing. I don't know what else to say, just amazing...

Increible

  • I don't like very much this aria. But she sings it great! A tone is so beautiful, her legato is so ease!

  • @marokt I used to find this aria boring, super boring...but if it's accompanied by acting, wow, marvelous... check out Callas' performance ;)

  • it's one of very few performances with her I like. It sounds more natural , when she is singing soprano.

  • She is fantastic. I will place her along with Callas and Price for Tosca. How come I never heard of her. Awesome, awesome...

  • For me she lacks details and dynamical range, only mf and f. Too fast to my understanding but her emotional approach (passion, implacability, sincerity) is sensibly justified.

  • She is MARVELLOUS! She sings it with so much passion and emotion, and her voice is so huge, dramatic, rich and dark! But, despite being a mezzo, her high note on ''perche' Signor'' is incredible!

  • I'd say that she is a mezzo SUCCEEDING in singing a soprano aria. She has such a rich voice with so many overtones, and a stunning vibrato, and therefore she is so good in arias where she shall express passion. Like in this. Or as Amneris and Acuzena,Eboli etc. She is GORGEOUS, there is no other word.

  • She is one of my favorite singers, but this is a soprano aria, and it sounds like she is a mezzo trying to sing a soprano aria.

  • She made the japanese audience shout! She is stunning, gorgeous, incredible. The interpretation, the voice, the emotion...First she was presented as artistic advisor to the St Petersburg Opera, but now they say she is the head of the opera.

  • this woman is a tiger!! I love her Carmen and her Santuzza, but here in Tosca is a little too dark for my taste. spetially in the middle register.

  • lascia a bocca aperta. Incredibile!!!

  • fabulous actress...Sung with great feeling

  • Thank you for you answer and glad she is well.

  • She sings it so weeell! I cannot believe she is a mezzo!

  • Is she alive?

  • According to wikipedia and her website, she is alive and well. I've seen her on tv as well, in some interview. This summer she will celebrate her 70th birthday.

  • singing Pique Dame in Bolshoi on 24th march. Trying to make it!

  • She is a MEZZO BUT DOES THIS WITH EASE.

  • VERY FINE

  • I'm commenting again because this is so incredibly beautiful. I wonder what she would have sounded like if her Soviet teachers hadn't made her voice darker (I believe she wrote she was a "thin and screamy soprano" before her teachers taught her how to "darken" the voice).

  • she is a mezzo but she is good at the soprano too wow

  • brilliant. rather than being a mezzo or a soprano... she is just being a singer with all the right notes and gives it an edge that is totally individual which is thrilling. BRAVO (to her, and to whoever posted this)

  • she is a contralto and she makes it as a soprano brava

  • she rushed a little bit too much before "quante miserie conobbi aiutai", which killed the suspense.

Actually she messes up on the time several times...but it's all fine.

her voice reminds me of Maria's, and has an excellent dark tone in her voice..

  • EXTRAORDINAIRE !!!!! Une des voix du siècle. Et quelle technique !

  • Bravissima!!

  • First of all, Obraztsova is great. What I like about her singing soprano things is that she doesn't get the chance to make the tone darker, which makes her timbre even more attractive and really soft (I mean the kind of softness that can be heard in, e.g., Margaret Price's singing: a round and gentle color). And I think her trick for holding the high notes less long works perfectly (I wouldn't expect anything else from a mezzo). By the way, I've read that she started training as a soprano.

  • the voice is great and her color undeniably Russian.

  • forget As and Bs.... this is a WODERFULL UNIQUE HUMANE FEMALE VOICE!!!!!!!....

  • like her better singing soprano hahaha. It's very strange to see a mezzo singing a soprano aria, usually you can find many sopranos singing mezzo, but to find a mezzo singing soprano is not easy, just Bartoli and Kozena, I really like this elena!!!

  • You forgot Eileen Farrell!

  • Verrett, Bumbury,Cossotto

  • a perfect, wonderful rendition...

strong and with the right feeling that this aria should be sung...

    Thanks for the posting!

    Great Obrastzova

  • Loved the strong vocal and great voice. Just a comment here. When performed in concert like this the acting distracts a bit. Within the context of a full production it works beautifully. I wonder if the singers just can't switch gears when once the arias are learned for opera. The arias seem a bit overdone when "performed" as solos with an orchestra only.

  • thank you!!

  • vocally its very interesting... but give her a break with pronounciation, she's russian. her acting is probably the best on this site... she's well in par with callas's acting... but she rushed the last few notes... and she cut them off early too... so it's pretty darn good... i can say that it's one of my favorite rendiditons on all of youtube

  • Juillhope17, you are right,I had a chance to hear her Ulrica, what a bottom, on reconsideration it is amazing that she held the B flat here as long as she did, she gets A's across the board.Truly amazing.

  • Ugly voice is good for Santuzza or Macbeth???? are you nuts o something???? Better go on being a ghost...

  • Actually Verdi demanded a not bird-kind voice for his lady Macbeth, he wanted a demond-kind voice, a not very beautiful one. Elena would be a good lady Macbeth.

  • You must be a fan of the scrawny and morbid voices of today.

  • Beautiful voice!!!

  • Una forza della natura....Timbro meraviglioso....Grazie Elena...Mia TOSCA.Solo tu.

  • Brava Obraztsova!! An amazing dramatic mezzo, who after hearing this performance, I wish would have sung more complete dramatic soprano roles.. Or at least recorded..

  • Actually, she has great command of the aria or at least the basics. There could be a little more variation of intensity, but otherwise she sings this aria very well. As far as her Italian is concerned, sounds fine to me. There are some slavic L's but otherwise nothing so disturbing that it would make you throw up.

  • The lady a least deserves an A for effort. The voice was never "pretty" and her Italian is nothing to write home about. However, her rendition of the aria impressed me as heartfelt and "sincera".It seems to me that all the right ideas are there even though she drops the line at the end. All together not bad for a heavy mezzo. Never heard Cossotto or Zajick even getting close to it.

  • i never heard a mezzo soprano singing tosca vissi d'arte. she is amazing here!!! the latter years, her voice was not as amazing as her prime years. people change anyway...

  • in the old school, mezzo was not about range, but timbre. Mezzos could sing all the high stuff and sange sop roles. People just aren't use to the huge voices singing this rep. I like it. But I love Freni too! :-)

  • Right on!!! in fact, the "mezzo-soprano" range was born after finding a new name for the early 2nd soprano, like in Bach, this voice can be above 1st sopr. and below the tenor. It was in the XX century that people forgot that and put the mezzo as the contralto-substitut, and that's also why it's so hard to find contraltos, because they all become mezzo...

  • Impressive nonetheless... but probably this why she ended up ruining her voice.

  • She is no Tebaldi or Callas, the voice is not that beautiful - It does not suit her at all.

  • Callas didn't have a beautiful voice either. Beauty is not what this song is about. It's desperate. Obraztsova does a lovely job with something out of her fach here.

  • @Iareto "Callas didn't have a beautiful voice either."

Your taste and YHO. Unless you have a definition for “beautiful” which I don’t know.

  • Very impressive!!!

  • To the one who wrote "horrible", i recommend Obraztsova's Azucena. Perhaps you will apologize.

  • Her Azucena...I agree with you. I was once at Obraztsova's consert in Sankt-Petersburg about 12 years ago. Stride la vampa was something, that made me love opera all this years!!!!

  • He obviously doesn´t know what a first class voice is. He´s DEAF!

  • HORRIBLE....

  • God what an ugly ugly voice. Bad enough when she sings in the mezzo range, but this? Terrible.

  • You are DEAF!

  • I thought we've spoked about music, not my English. Personally I think that my English is quite normal. I'm not asking how's your Russian these days, honey...Besides, who heard Obraztsova live? I did! And you perfect English speaker?

  • Much more better?

  • Yes. much more. After all Vishnevskaja is one of the greatests sopranos of 20 th century. And after all Tosca is a soprano role

  • I think that Tosca with Vishnevskaja is the worst recording of that opera, sorry if I have to say that...

And she indeed was a good singer, but NOT in Tosca!

  • I was referring to your grammar, honey!

  • Come on, give him/her a break...

  • Sorry, but I don't agree with you. Vishnevskaja did everything in her life perfectly. Her glory will shine very long. And by the way she was one of Obraztsova teacher's...

  • Nobody does things "perfectly".

You can like or dislike something, but yours is a BIG statement.

Personally i find Vishnesvskaja's Tosca quite bad, her approach of the role is over the top, her style for Italian music is very lacking, her diction is ABSOLUTELY horrible, and there many more Toscas who overcome hers.

Nevertheless as you say her glory will shine anyway, but not for Tosca...

    Peace.

  • We don't want to teach foreigners bad English now, do we?

  • And who said that we have to teach foreigners (foreigners?...This is a wordlwide accessible website) English, sweetie?

  • That would be interesting to hear! But I thik Vishnevskaja would be much more better...

  • Much more better?

  • braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaavo

  • Intersting hearing Obraztsova singing a soprano role, and she gets really into it,perhaps she should have sung the whole opera..?
