Просто шикарно!! Кабалье сопрано..так,на всякий случай)) И ария для сопрано. А сравнивать Образцову с Кабалье просто смешно. Если брать исполнительниц Тоски,то Кабалье в нем далеко на первом месте по исполнению...
Elena is very good, but caballe is slightly better. Elena breaks the high note takes a breath and then goes on. Caballe did in one breath what everybody else do in two. Listen to caballe before u make a final judgement. Elena is as good as callas and Sutherland and dessi.
This is an example when a mezzo try to sing a soprano role.Even if in the hight notes they can achieve them , we see how havy is the performance and how dark is the all piece, because the liryc rules are the same for all the liryc singers, BUT they are adjustments and specifics ways for example to prononce the consonants and vowells, etc, etc, that make the soprano tone-even dramatics ones - more bright. The dream of many mezzos is to be sopranos in concerts and mezzos in opera. We pay attention|
I've never heard a true mezzo try this before (that excludes Verrett and Bumbry, mezzos w a soprano extension who did soprano parts thru most of their careers). It was a bit too much for her in the B-flat and the downward passage following but I give her credit for attempting it. Except for those few notes it was quite effective. Her voice was really huge. Nice post.
Others have more beautiful voices, Obraztsova is a bit crude and wobbly sometimes, but what spectacular musicality! I've heard that she is one of the most musically gifted of all opera singers, and perhaps the most musical loving of them all. I am not surprised, look at her face when she has sung Dalila in the Tokyo concert! She IS MUSIC...
Glorious voice, slight problem with the breathing, although live performances sometimes tend to do this to singers, epecially with all of the adrenilin working.
Leontine Price's interpretation is also awesome although she lets her voice do all of the dramatic effects.
I agree with everybody else here who has commented. She is amazing, however I prefer her singing when she is in the mezzo fach, where she should be. But, I really must say, she sang this very very well!
My name is Bjørn-Erik Ulvatne from Norway. We was so lucky to have her this summer for our "Summer academy". She had some masterclasses. A true artist she is! Really amazing voice and voice mastering!
Elena, how great you are! I love you so much. Your rich, dark, warm and beautiful voice and astonishing vibrato and fantastic expression are wonderful! You are so dramatic. I cried when I saw your Santuzza, in Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana is great. WOW! I'm speechless! How I'd like to see you live!
For me she lacks details and dynamical range, only mf and f. Too fast to my understanding but her emotional approach (passion, implacability, sincerity) is sensibly justified.
She is MARVELLOUS! She sings it with so much passion and emotion, and her voice is so huge, dramatic, rich and dark! But, despite being a mezzo, her high note on ''perche' Signor'' is incredible!
I'd say that she is a mezzo SUCCEEDING in singing a soprano aria. She has such a rich voice with so many overtones, and a stunning vibrato, and therefore she is so good in arias where she shall express passion. Like in this. Or as Amneris and Acuzena,Eboli etc. She is GORGEOUS, there is no other word.
She made the japanese audience shout! She is stunning, gorgeous, incredible. The interpretation, the voice, the emotion...First she was presented as artistic advisor to the St Petersburg Opera, but now they say she is the head of the opera.
According to wikipedia and her website, she is alive and well. I've seen her on tv as well, in some interview. This summer she will celebrate her 70th birthday.
que giles que son como pueden decir que una version de concierto puede serla mejor, no se si saben, pero es parte de una opera, y dentro de la interpretación general se aprecia
I'm commenting again because this is so incredibly beautiful. I wonder what she would have sounded like if her Soviet teachers hadn't made her voice darker (I believe she wrote she was a "thin and screamy soprano" before her teachers taught her how to "darken" the voice).
brilliant. rather than being a mezzo or a soprano... she is just being a singer with all the right notes and gives it an edge that is totally individual which is thrilling. BRAVO (to her, and to whoever posted this)
First of all, Obraztsova is great. What I like about her singing soprano things is that she doesn't get the chance to make the tone darker, which makes her timbre even more attractive and really soft (I mean the kind of softness that can be heard in, e.g., Margaret Price's singing: a round and gentle color). And I think her trick for holding the high notes less long works perfectly (I wouldn't expect anything else from a mezzo). By the way, I've read that she started training as a soprano.
like her better singing soprano hahaha. It's very strange to see a mezzo singing a soprano aria, usually you can find many sopranos singing mezzo, but to find a mezzo singing soprano is not easy, just Bartoli and Kozena, I really like this elena!!!
Loved the strong vocal and great voice. Just a comment here. When performed in concert like this the acting distracts a bit. Within the context of a full production it works beautifully. I wonder if the singers just can't switch gears when once the arias are learned for opera. The arias seem a bit overdone when "performed" as solos with an orchestra only.
vocally its very interesting... but give her a break with pronounciation, she's russian. her acting is probably the best on this site... she's well in par with callas's acting... but she rushed the last few notes... and she cut them off early too... so it's pretty darn good... i can say that it's one of my favorite rendiditons on all of youtube

it's her voice, it's hard to hold those notes and really let them ring them you're a soprano, i mean it's a B-flat, and a mezzo's range is about to an A, so it's still pretty impressive.
Juillhope17, you are right,I had a chance to hear her Ulrica, what a bottom, on reconsideration it is amazing that she held the B flat here as long as she did, she gets A's across the board.Truly amazing.

HORRIBLE. You can hardly understand the beginning of the aria and her voice is terrible. Maybe it sounds OK on Cavalleria Rusticana becuase jealousy is an ugly feeling, so an ugly voice is good for Santuzza or for Macbeth, but not for Tosca. HORRIBLE.
Actually Verdi demanded a not bird-kind voice for his lady Macbeth, he wanted a demond-kind voice, a not very beautiful one. Elena would be a good lady Macbeth.
Mil disculpas, pensé lo contrario. De todas formas, cada cual tiene sus gustos y opiniones. Brava Obraztsova!! An amazing dramatic mezzo, who after hearing this performance, I wish would have sung more complete dramatic soprano roles.. Or at least recorded..
Actually, she has great command of the aria or at least the basics. There could be a little more variation of intensity, but otherwise she sings this aria very well. As far as her Italian is concerned, sounds fine to me. There are some slavic L's but otherwise nothing so disturbing that it would make you throw up.
The lady a least deserves an A for effort. The voice was never "pretty" and her Italian is nothing to write home about. However, her rendition of the aria impressed me as heartfelt and "sincera".It seems to me that all the right ideas are there even though she drops the line at the end. All together not bad for a heavy mezzo. Never heard Cossotto or Zajick even getting close to it.
i never heard a mezzo soprano singing tosca vissi d'arte. she is amazing here!!! the latter years, her voice was not as amazing as her prime years. people change anyway...
in the old school, mezzo was not about range, but timbre. Mezzos could sing all the high stuff and sange sop roles. People just aren't use to the huge voices singing this rep. I like it. But I love Freni too! :-)
Right on!!! in fact, the "mezzo-soprano" range was born after finding a new name for the early 2nd soprano, like in Bach, this voice can be above 1st sopr. and below the tenor. It was in the XX century that people forgot that and put the mezzo as the contralto-substitut, and that's also why it's so hard to find contraltos, because they all become mezzo...
Callas didn't have a beautiful voice either. Beauty is not what this song is about. It's desperate. Obraztsova does a lovely job with something out of her fach here.
Her Azucena...I agree with you. I was once at Obraztsova's consert in Sankt-Petersburg about 12 years ago. Stride la vampa was something, that made me love opera all this years!!!!

Personally i find Vishnesvskaja's Tosca quite bad, her approach of the role is over the top, her style for Italian music is very lacking, her diction is ABSOLUTELY horrible, and there many more Toscas who overcome hers.
