Possibly one of the most atmospheric and moving films ever produced....and Delerue's delicate score is simply perfect. I recently played the movie to my wife and it left her in tears. Incidentally, the liner notes to the soundtrack cd provide some interesting info about 'the Color Purple' stating that the soundtrack to 'Our Mother's House' had been used prominently in the film's 'temp track'....and the resulting score was eerily similar.!
This opening scene is a poignant reminder of what Chepstow Rise in Croydon USED to look like before the Victorian villas and their gardens were ruthlessly swept away in favour of ugly, modern, high-density housing.
This could be a metaphor for what has happened to an England in the clutches of an unholy alliance of free-market fundamentalists and cultural Stalinists.
Still, this is a very fine film, even if the ill-fated (in real life) Annette Carell is woefully under-used here.
@Fredigundis22 I couldn't agree with you more. I miss the Britain that once was. Now, there are only miniscule fragments left. As much as I heartily enjoy this film, it's still rather bittersweet. So much is now gone forever.
WHY that sounds like Quincy Jone's score to The Color Purple..BUT IT AINT..this is Georges Delerue's score to OUR MOTHERS HOUSE!!! HUMMMMMM Jones why did you RIP OFF this score? UR just as bad as James CRAP Horner
A very moving film with haunting visuals and such magnificent young actors. I grew up in a similar house in a similar neighbourhood. Sadly, I suspect the house and street in this film now only exist in memory and on film. Thank you for sharing this gem.

Too bad the aspect ratio is incorrect; it's 4 x 3
