What does Mr. J.M. Stipe say there: "This is about something that each of us will face at some point in our lives since we were, in fact very, very, very lucky." Hmm...........
@loxley1999 I always heard it as "if we are, in fact, very, very lucky," which made me think that he was talking about looking back at your life from an old age (hence the "if we're lucky" part). But who knows - I haven't seen the lyrics!
Very, very good song. I hope it will show up on the next R.E.M. album.
Amazing that R.E.M. are in the position to cut out such a great song! That means that they can write easily a bunch of great tunes. Only the very great bands can dot that.
I place R.E.M. in the same league as The Rolling Stones and The Who. Pure geniuses.
go to the next live show of r.e.m. and hold up a barrel saying "please put "Staring Down the Barrel of the Middle Distance" on the CD" that worked with man-sized wreath on accelerate.
Why on earth didn't you realesed this awesome song in "Accelerate" guys??? The album is amazing but this would've turned it into perfection!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love ya R.E.M.!!!!!
I would have to agree. I heard in interviews that they wanted 11 songs on the album so this got cut. Don't you think this should replaced Mr. Richards? Or just make it a 12 song album. I prefer the chorus from the Dublin rehearsals. Just my opinion. Still love this band. Always will.
Mr. Richards was good, so I'd rather it be a 12 song album. However, I'd probably replace I'm Gonna DJ with this if the selection was limited for whatever reason. It's a fun little song, but this is much better.

Thanks for posting this. I was there and totallly shocked when they did it. I remember everyone, even Jeff Lurie(Eagles owner), singing along.
