What better way could there be to aid terrorists and extremist organizations than through drug prohibition. Economists estimate that the proceeds from Afghanistan's black market opium economy is $2.8 billion. The greater part ($2 billion or so according to a variety of sources) is split between regional drug trafficking organizations, Islamic radicals such as Al Qaeda and the Taliban and nationalist insurgencies from Central Asia to the Middle East.

Prohibition is of course not the source of conflict in Afghanistan where 50% of its GDP is illegal because it is opium-based., but it clearly fuels it. The Taliban is involved in trafficking into Pakistan, and the ability of Afghan warlords to maintain and arm their militias is clearly connected to the drug trade. Prohibition has invariably proved to be counterproductive and does nothing but strengthen terrorism and insurgency.

When the West talks about the Middle East they like to bring up the fact that women are treated despicably over there. I'm not sure how much resistance there was, but as I look through these elections in Pakistan and this leader in Afghanistan, I've seen women in outspoken leadership roles, dare I say, more often then here in the West.

Just finished watching the Gore Vidal interview. Not a man to pull his punches! I liked the fact that the interviewer didn't just cheerlead GV, he gave him the occasional poke as well, although primarily, he simply let him say his piece. This could be a big break through a major global news network beholden to the us, the people of the world.
