It's because he's signing his first contract at the age of 24 (as of Sept 15) - the Collective Bargaining Agreement says he's only allowed to sign for a year. Part of the reason he took his time deciding is because he will be a RFA after this season, and he knew he was really committing to a team for the next 3-4 years, not just this one.

If he had been about a month older (birthday before Sept 15) he actually could have signed any contract (not entry-level).

Since that time he's toured his preferred cities (Colorado, San Jose, Dallas, Toronto). He's talked to Patrick Roy on Skype and Forsberg from Colorado's standpoint. For his sake I hope he doesn't go to the Leafs. Toronto will throw him in as starting goalie and if he doesn't perform he will be eaten alive by the media. He definitely has a lot of potential but he hasn't played a single game in the NHL and we have no idea how he will adjust. If he is given too much responsibility too fast it could ruin his development and he may not reach his potential. (See: Kari Letohnen in Atlanta) Of the other rumored teams San Jose and Dallas are better fits.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. And, of course, all the discussion just assumes he will pick the Leafs. He has a big decision to make: "Do I want to win?" (San Jose, Dallas) OR "Do I want to give hope to a lesser team?" (Colorado, Toronto). In my opinion Toronto is a high risk/reward option. If he plays great he becomes the second coming of Christ; if his play falters the fans and media will be harsh and unforgiving. Also, lets not forget Brian Burke hates Europeans.
