i can believe he can earn his spot ahead of toskala and probaly have more starts and might get us into the playoffs but has to prove that hes beeter than toskala so that ron wilson can give him more starts in the season
@m0rt3m3r toskala is shit....toronto needs 1 of the best 3 goalies in the NHL if they want to stand any chance of winning the stanley cup, thats the way its always been in the last 20 years. Then add a few good scorers, some luck, passion, and let it ferment for another 43 years and we may see a stanley cup...maybe.
go leafs go that kid is amazing so glad toronto has got him great job brian burke now trade kaberla and a few other people and ull have a great team gustavvason should be the next nabokov !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No team could sign him longer than a year.He becomes a restricted free agent at the end of the year, but will probably then sign a long term deal with God's team
that's what i thought at first too. Apparently there is some rule about people that are under or 20 that come over can only be signed to a 1 year contract. I'm not 100 % sure but thats what i heard
It's because he's signing his first contract at the age of 24 (as of Sept 15) - the Collective Bargaining Agreement says he's only allowed to sign for a year. Part of the reason he took his time deciding is because he will be a RFA after this season, and he knew he was really committing to a team for the next 3-4 years, not just this one.
If he had been about a month older (birthday before Sept 15) he actually could have signed any contract (not entry-level).
Im really excited about him with Torontos Strong defence to protect him any goalie in Toronto wont have to face many shots either way with a defence like Toronto hes gonna do good
im a sabres fan and its kinda wierd the leafs are starting to look like a team, wierd its almost like it happening in a matter of weeks, gustavsson, bauchimen komiserik, nazem kadri, some grit with colten orr and possibly drew stafford, if they decide to trade kaberle. not to mention, luc schen, grabovski, hagman and the head coch and gm of the usa olympic team, i applaud the tml ( i never thought i would ever say that)
he wouldn't have the most playing time on the leafs surprisingly....he would actually have more playing time on colorado because raycroft is gone and budaij has not played to his potential and the avs are already saying budaij is going to play a back-up role.
Borje Salming. This was like last month from the World Championships.
Since that time he's toured his preferred cities (Colorado, San Jose, Dallas, Toronto). He's talked to Patrick Roy on Skype and Forsberg from Colorado's standpoint. Don't know who he talked to for San Jose. In Dallas they introduced him to George Bush. In Toronto he had dinner with John Mitchell (they have the same agent). I'm pretty sure he's also talked to Frogren (former teammate of his).
He'll fit right in with the other numerous Swedish players on the Detroit Red Wings (his first choice). Vancouver already has Luongo, so they are set in goal.
this kid would be stupid to sign anywhere but the leafs. We're the only team interested in him without a # 1 goalie, so he will get his playing time, unlike in san jose or vancouver. This kid is 24 and hes already way better than Toskala. Get rid of Vesa's salary and sign him for less. Win - Win ;)
Lol the toronto cant make the playoff lol hey i have a question for you ! - who have 24 stanley cups !!??? oh yeah its the Montreal Canadiens not the gay maple leafs!!! fagget
yeah with shitty price and about half ur team will be gone July 1st u guys are gonna go deep. Canadiens suck and dont know how to buidl a team anymore. wanna learn how to team build without having to tank lok at the devils and wings
For his sake I hope he doesn't go to the Leafs. Toronto will throw him in as starting goalie and if he doesn't perform he will be eaten alive by the media. He definitely has a lot of potential but he hasn't played a single game in the NHL and we have no idea how he will adjust. If he is given too much responsibility too fast it could ruin his development and he may not reach his potential. (See: Kari Letohnen in Atlanta) Of the other rumored teams San Jose and Dallas are better fits.
why would you assume that T.O. would start him him too early?....they've got Toskala for another year, there's an opportunity for a learning season before the push is made.
I can't buy into the idea that Burke will screw this up......the only way he can is to push for the quick fix that you mentioned. I feel he has every intention of taking his time and attempt an actual rebuild. Sure their track record sucks, but it's about time they started looking ahead.
I guess we'll have to wait and see. And, of course, all the discussion just assumes he will pick the Leafs. He has a big decision to make: "Do I want to win?" (San Jose, Dallas) OR "Do I want to give hope to a lesser team?" (Colorado, Toronto). In my opinion Toronto is a high risk/reward option. If he plays great he becomes the second coming of Christ; if his play falters the fans and media will be harsh and unforgiving. Also, lets not forget Brian Burke hates Europeans.
You may be right. Although it may be harder to decide as playing time may be a factor..."do I sit behind Nabokov/Turco?" or "I know I'll be a starter sooner with a lesser quality team"
all you maple leaf fans who get mad at gusstavson for losing a couple of games have respect you should be proud of this young talent

Frano911 2 years ago
He would get the most playing time in Toronto cause Turco in Dallas is fairly solid starting goalie, Toskala is iffy especially after his injuries.
paperbonez 2 years ago
Jonas would be HUGE in Toronto -- pretty sure he would take #1 spot from Toskala in no time. Pogge sucks.

Come to Toronto!!! you ll get a realistic shake at the top job
If it means splitting with Toskala to one day learning on how to be consistent enough for the NHL so be it
It takes time, but with your skill, and poise you ve shown the world
i think its possible you will be ready in a few years to play 60-70 games
