Oh my God the costumes are awful. Everyone is wearing blue! I performed in this last week and the sisters, cousins and aunts were in pink. There's so much lack of colour here!
Yupp! I believe you. I did that show years and years ago, and ours was also a lot better, mind you, let's not discourage amateur groups. This is one, isn't it? These usually collect the proceeds for charity, and they have fun while at it, so, you go guys!
And they wonder why amateur audiences are falling! Hebe was OK, Deadeye was dead, Ralph was awful, and as for Josephine, she looked old enough to be Ralph's mother and her voice was unpleasantly shrill. (Someone please give this woman for she is hardly a girl, a makeup lesson!) G&S principals need to know when it is time to play the character parts or retire back to the chorus. Was there a show this year, or have you all retired (hopefully!).
can anyone tell me exactly where this theatre is located? I'm going to be studying abroad next fall at Edge Hill and I'd love to come and check out a show (or even audition, if time permits)
My biggest problem is that the cast seems to be taking the show too seriously. XD G&S's material is so melodramatic, it really sucks the energy out if you don't play into that.
Nice movement for the rest of the cast during the trio bits with Hebe, Ralph and Josephine; I'm in this show right now, and that part's always really awkward because you've got a stage of lots of people with absolutely nothing to do during that.
As always, we are grateful for opinions honestly expressed. One point that I think is generally worth making is that G&S live perfomances do not readily video well. I always find that a live performance seems very much better than the video of the same performance. It is easy to be over critical of an amateur video. Our audiences obviously enjoyed our show.
if i hadn't done this show (which im in right now) then i would have no idea what's going on. theres no energy in the actors faces. no offense but its kinda corny and there's not too much movement while they're singing, not including the dancing, but dont you think they could've done both at the same time? my high school's version of this musical is amazing. sorry if i sounded mean. im just expressing my opinion.
Not bad. Lacks excitement! Notes not very secure at times but you don't know if that's down to the video. The chorus is a little wooden (particularly the girls) but the men bring up the age which is good. I just wish traditional didn't mean bad costumes, wigs and boring movement. As to our American cousins - have you tried getting people interested in G&S - it is not easy. Well done Preston!
I'm sorry...I know I've commented on this video before, as well as other Preston G&S shows, but I fear this needs telling: YOU are the homeland of Sirs Gibert & Sullivan and you really need better singers than this...beg, plead, STEAL singers for your troupe! I realize this is community theatre, but there MUST be some sort of level of profession. I say this AS a G&S community actor in the United States...thanks for listening to my rant.
I agree. I'm doing this show right now and I wanted to see what it was like when others had done it and I'm not too impressed. I'm really not impressed with Dick Deadeye. It also seems way too slow.
My people are critical are they not?
This is fun come on...
it's great stuff.

SexiProductions33, though his name is pronounced RAFE, it is in true British fashion spelled RALPH.

How abso0lutely unfortunate for all involved. Deadeye is just dead and Ralph, there are now words to describe the likes of him.

I find it to be a fine production, and my grandfather was a great German Pirate King in Greenpoint, New York once, so I know about these things.

Am I the only one who seems to think Ralph is atrocious? He couldn't SIT on those notes any more even if he tried

I think Deadeye has a great a voice....a real bass-baritone, which you so rarely hear in the role, and what it needs so much.

The ensemble stuff is very good, especially 'This Very Night'
Roseburg93 4 years ago
You bet. That's a tough one to do. The chorus was very well rehearsed musically; they just needed a little more zing dramatically.
