  • now is there a way to play game gear games on a master system?

  • @reesercliff Not officially but I think there are a few hack jobs. Some Game Gear games support a higher color count than what the SMS can display so not all games would work but I think some can be done.

  • PHANTASY STAR ! ON THE GO HOLY SHIT STOP THE PRESSES OH FUCK OH FUCK OH FUCK *dies of heart attack*

  • @MisterMinnesota You know you can get it on Gameboy Advance...right?

  • If I had a game gear with this adapter as well as a master system, that is if I were alive back then. Id use my game gear to play my master system games on the go, and the only game gear games id buy were game gear exclusives

  • I havn't came across one yet, but there is an adapter to play nes games on a gameboy advance

  • Thanks for posting this whenever you did! I had a master gear converter and i thought it was broken until i heard you mention how much pressure was required to get it in right. Then i tried it and it works! =D

  • @MN12BIRD is there any other converters for the game gear might buy a game gear

  • Now all they need to make is an addon for the Game Gear that lets it play Game Boy games!

  • i have 4 diferent Mastersystem convertors for the game gear, BEESHU GAME MASTER , NUBY , MASTER GEAR CONVERTOR 1 , MASTER GEAR CONVERTOR 2, only the Nuby & the Master gear convertor 2 work when the SUPER WIDE GEAR is fitted, i personally would avoid the MASTER GEAR CONVERTOR 1 & try to pick up a MASTER GEAR CONVERTOR 2

  • I have two Master System Converters and they both flicker. Any new information as to why some do and some don't?

  • There must be a modern screen replacement for the gamegear. There was one for the NOMAD.

  • I'm looking for both the Gamegear and one of these converters to play on the road. Especially because I would like to mod a new sound board for FM synthesis, a better screen with less power consumption, and a power pack for a way longer gameplay time; I'd try to get about 7-8 hours max.

  • the game gear sucks with super hard games and no save feature

  • @lschlachter1 but if you play long rpgs or platies, you usualy get codes.

  • It was a great concept, but the picture quality was so horrible, that I couldn't play most games. It hurt just trying to look at it.

And you couldn't even read text on certain games.

  • does it drain batterys faster?

  • I remember the local game shop here wanting to charge $200 for one of these adapters a few years back. It was the only one they had and they weren't even sure it was for sale...

I'm surprised they're so cheap on ebay.

  • hia i found a converter like that for my game gear it came with 4 game gear games and 3 sega megadrive games one of mega drive games was mj's MOONWALKER :p got all this for 15 euro :):) greets from holland

  • u know there is a portable nes system, its called the retro mini.

  • it sucks and breaks easily

  • i have one of these, they are exellent.

    did'nt notice any flickering.

  • I'm diggin it jake, doesn't look that bad when you put in castle of illusion, maybe it was the angle but I have that one for the game gear and it looks just as clear as the ms cart you've got. Maybe some minor glitches but looks like an adapter to get for sure.

  • Yeah its pretty neat and you can get them new still on EBAY for nothing. I got this one for like $10 new in box.

  • it was outrun that made me get the master gear converter because the actual game gear version of outrun is terrible, the sms version is awesome and is even better on the game gear :D

  • Interesting. I just picked up a bunch of Master System games today, don't have a Game Gear though.

  • Interesting thing about this product. Game Gear games looked much better than Master games did through this converter. Therefore, several Sega Master games were 100% identical to the Game Gear versions. The Game Gear version of Castle of Illusion is the same, so you were better off buying the Game Gear version of this than playing the Master version through a converter.

  • I had this, but the resolution of each game was really awful. At least with the converter I was using. I am thankful we have the gp2x Wiz today. Probably the best way to play Sega Master games on the road now.

  • It's a fantasic piece of kit, same with the master converter for the Megadrive/Genesis.

  • i have always wanted one of these!!!

  • i got a friend who has this. works really good.

  • great vid never knew about this one

  • I had the exact same setup as that back in the day. The converter was definetely a cool thing to have.

  • sweet. wily's revenge, i was just playin that a min ago.

  • *orgasms super hardcore*

  • cool, i have 2 game gear one dont star up and the other have no sound

  • try taking the speaker out of the one that dont turn on, and put it in the one with no sound.

  • Very cool video as always man :-D

But do u know what is cooler then MD games on the GG? GG Games on TV :-D

  • i didn't even know this existed nice vid

  • The Master system was a great sega system I never owned one but my friend did and we played a lot.

  • Brilliant man. I have to get one. I just bought my first Game Gear today believe it or not.

  • hey jake...where did u find that converter at?

  • Ebay man they have tons of them on there all boxed and cheap!

  • thats cool. as long as its playable it works fine

  • really gotta get my hands on one of those... have u got one of the converters for ur genesis to play master system games?

  • No I kinda wanted one but I already have a SMS and SMS2 lol

  • i dont like how the light is so bright

  • Sega 1887? =P

  • Haha, I laughed at that as well...

  • Hehe! =3

  • Indeed, my fine chap, I can remember it as if it were yesterday...There I was, a dashing young lad of three-and twenty years, steering my newly purchased horseless carriage with one hand while thrilling to the high-speed action of Outrun in the other, waving to all the young lasses as I passed them by on the cobbled streets of London. Oh, to be young again! Alas, this "Mickey the Mouse" game of which he speaks will not be available for another century or so... :(

  • Spiffing! XD

  • coll, i will get one of these eventually

  • Great video.

Is that converter a battery vampire?

  • the game gear has poor battery life on its own,

imagine how much battery that thing sucks out lol

  • the screen looks like crap!!!! It's just not clear from the video!!!!

  • woah, that's neat :-)

  • I have got that exact adapter and the power base converter when I was younger after my master system burnt up.

I always wished it played the card games to cause Ghost House was my favorite. nice vid.

  • Jake, I freaking love the sms converter for the master system now I don't need to buy gamegear games. And, when I was little I also thought about an nes converter.

  • Wow, the quality of this video is so much better than your other videos, at least the introduction to this video is better in quality, did you get a new camera?

  • Those lines that don't get used are always there, most NTSC TVs just don't show the entire display (anything past ~224/448 lines is overscan -unless you go into the service menue and manually adjust the scan)

Hence, why that's also visible in emulators. (and PAL TVs, maybe some NTSC TV's with very tight scan calibration)

THat's also why some games look a bit stretched on a TV (like sonic, with him and rings being oval rather than round as they are on PC monitor in an emulator)

  • Very cool man.

  • a lot of the screen problems could be coming from that third party adaptor you are using... actually i'd put my money on that being the reason

  • where did you get it!?

  • eBayz!

  • lol! alright, you want me to have your Dreamcast right? XD jk man

  • I had this set up on my gamegear back in the early 90's. I never had a master system but master system games were cheap as hell. so I got the adapter then a bunch of master system games.

  • Nice stuff! Didn't know the Game Gear and the Master System were that identical.

  • cool! but I dont like the master system.

  • To each his own, I have 55 Master System games...

  • is game boy 8 bit?

  • Yep sure is.

  • Game Boy has a variant of Z80, the NES uses a 6502. So the only way an adaptor could have been made would be to include a 6502 in the adaptor.

  • Wow, I am SO jealous of this(I want to play my Master System games on the go, damn it!)! I guess I'll take things one step further and actually INTEGRATE a 50-pin cartridge slot into one of my Game Gears for Master System compatibility(I once tried to modify a Game Gear game I don't care about with a 50-pin cartridge slot, but managed to ruin the contact points for the slot on the cartridge's board).

  • That would be slick.

  • I am debating which of my 2 Game Gears to do the mod on. I have a European non-BIOS Game Gear whose capacitors have been replaced and a North American BIOS-equipped Game Gear whose stock capacitors are still intact(all of them), but which I eventually intend on replacing for the sake of keeping electrolyte from leaking onto the motherboard.

Speaking of leaky capacitors, I think that's the reason why the screen flickers the way it does. You may want to replace the caps on the Game Gear's mobo.

  • No it doesn't flicker when I play GG games just when I play the SMS games. Hey what is the difference between a BIOS and non-BIOS GG?

  • lol i never knew gamegear had a bios

  • Exactly like a TMSS and non-TMSS Genesis: the Produced by or Under License from Sega Enterprises LTD. boot screen. Non-BIOS Game Gears don't show that screen; they just boot straight to the game.

I will make note of this: even though your Game Gear plays Game Gear games without flickering, it doesn't mean it will behave the same way with Master System games. It is IMPERATIVE that you replace ALL the capacitors on the Game Gear's motherboard and sound board, as they will leak.

  • The big question is: when? Like I said, my North American Game Gear has no leaky capacitors, but my European Game Gear had MANY that leaked their electrolyte. Replace all capacitors on the motherboard and sound board on all your Game Gears ASAP.

  • awesomeness!

  • So will it support the FM sound then?

  • the flicker on the screen is probably due to a fault in the converter, or maybe the connections are dirty.

but its a cool idea, definetly saves money

  • Dude, this is just teasing me because i've just been outbid on one of these by about 10p (english money)...

    Nice vid though ;-)

  • doyou have to take it out to play game gear games again?

  • Yeah you do.

  • Very cool. I've never heard of this before. There was a SMS on Kijiji yesterday - system, gun, controls, all hookups and 14 CIB games for $35. I didn't bother since I'm not a big SMS fan but it was a great deal.

  • Ahh dude you should have picked it up anyway!

  • I thought about it but I've got no room to start on another system collection. I probably wouldn't have gotten it anyway. The ad was deleted shortly after it was posted, suggesting someone bought it the second it came up. I don't see many SMS systems on Kijiji here in Windsor.

  • what do you think of those hand helds that will play original NES carts,,,,kinda cool

  • The the newer ones look decent.

  • I was gonna get one of these, but it was too expensive.

  • cool

  • cool!

  • I never had any flicker on mine.

But then again mine was PAL.

  • Maybe because we PAL gamers are used to the flicker ;P
