  • A #1 hit for Tommy Steele in the United Kingdom. It was the 21st #1 song in the UK of the Rock Era. He knocked Guy Mitchell out of the top spot who had the same hit. One week later, Mitchell took the top spot again with this song. To my knowledge, that is the only time this has ever happened on any chart.

  • i get the feeling somewhere that these scenes are from the beatles ..

  • I wonder what P.A they used for this gig!!

  • shite

  • ace footAGE,,,Tommy sTEELE NEVER GETS THE CREdit for being ouR FIRST Rock n rOLL Star,,,,,,he,s the maN XXXXX

  • nice to see the audience going wild in those Pre-beatle days?

  • In the beginning there was "TOMMY STEELE"! UK's only Rock n Roll singer for a while. Not long but he was first. I was there and my parents wouldn't let me listen to him because he was a bad influence and Rock n Roll was the devils music according to the newspapers! They still print a lot of rubbish now but I don't but them anymore.

  • i remember his brother Colin Hicks doing the working mens clubs in the late 50s, trying to make a living off his back,he didn't last long.

  • It was pre Cliff Richard :-)

  • Tommy Steele Britains "first" Rock "N" Roll star. Pre-dates Marty and Cliff. However, Billy Fury for me, remains "our" best Pop/Rock Star.

  • This is my Grandads cousin, I can't believe how big he was! Thanks for the upload.

  • Rock on Tommy :-))

  • Real historical facts

Elvis first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", released in January 1956

Steele's first single "Rock With The Caveman," released in October, 1956

What was Elvis's first UK hit? Blue Suede Shoes reached number 9 in the UK on 15 June 1956.

Elvis charted before Steele in the UK.

Feel free to do some research if you think I'm wrong.

  • all die kreischenden Backfische, Tommy war ein Held in der damaligen Zeit, weit vor Cliff Richard, und nicht so "weichgespült" !

  • "The Midshipman? Merchant-ship Rocker of 1956. Butter Fingers But still hanging in there. Good on you Tommy..

  • I'd rather take lessons in Spanish^^

    malo que decir tal cosa.!!!!!!!!!!

  • i only know tommy as little white bull and what a mouth, shocked to se this, did he think he was elvis, or elvis think he was tommy?????????

  • tommy steele hit number in the uk charts before elvis and quite a few hits in the charts, he then turned all smiley and disneyish

  • why didnt you just smash him in his north and south, cheesy non stop grinning halfwitted, big headed loser.

  • This and roch with the caveman and tennage party I like this songs really much but his not a favorit ...

I like Cliff richard Much better.. but unforitnly he do this song better than Cliff...

But If elvis had recorded this song it would be the Best version No doubt :) he had it all:)

  • @GGuadalajaraa have you ever considered, taking english lessons???

  • thank for posting this wonderfuld video

  • Wow! Why haven't we heard more of this guy? He looks fabulous and was obviously very popular.

  • A clone.

Couldn'r play guitar. (Bert Weedon did that off stage)

Slurrs his words because his manager Larry Parbes thought that ws "Ameircan".

Pathetic, contrived and died a death.

    12 month cockney wonder.

Cliff Rihard and the Drifters were a far better and more sincere imitaion of US rock groups.

Thank God we only had to wait 4 more years for the Beatles.

  • this guy is still on stage was and always has been a star, made several hollywood movies and countless tv and stage shows

  • Fuck off!

  • nonce

  • just seen him on the box [ beeb 1]. looks in good form.

  • Splendid

  • Listen the version of Cliff Richard and the Shadows (already played by BBC Radio 2, to be released on 14 Sep. 2009). Perfect!

  • From sea-man, to rocking the airwaves 1956.

  • Brillant memories

  • can he sing this song in yiddish,?? or is it yiddish??

  • He wore his own "Tee Shirt"

  • From the looks of this clip, the talented Mr Steele was quite the rage in the UK at the time. A bobbysoxer's dreamboat! I was only familiar with him from his appearance in American movies like "The Happiest Millionaire" and "Finian's Rainbow'. I hope that he is well & happy these days. Thanks for posting this! :)

  • thanks for comments

  • I was there at this concert, Tommy was my first love :-)

I ate his picture on sandwiches LOL

I was only twelve at the time so you can guess my age now...

  • Eating sandwiches with a tommy steele filling..

    great comment

  • Very nice! Thanks for sharing!

  • Along with Joe Brown a much underated pre Beatle UK rocker.

    Tanx for Postin

  • As the youngest of 7 and at the age of 59 this song says it all to me. I like Guy Mitchell`s version too. Stan

  • Mitchell did a great job, but I think these 2 versions are neck to neck. Yeah I see what you mean, it was an end to an era.

  • That blonde girl at 1.58 is absolutely adorable, and it's odd to think she'd be in her late 60s or early 70s now!

  • Yes the ageing process is a wonderful thing eh ?....

  • And the older woman wearing the hat at around 2.07? Someone's Mum who insisted on going along?

  • Excellent rock'n'roll record from a good ol' English troubadour.

  • Brilliant.... And this was pre Beatles.

  • awesome
