A #1 hit for Tommy Steele in the United Kingdom. It was the 21st #1 song in the UK of the Rock Era. He knocked Guy Mitchell out of the top spot who had the same hit. One week later, Mitchell took the top spot again with this song. To my knowledge, that is the only time this has ever happened on any chart.
In the beginning there was "TOMMY STEELE"! UK's only Rock n Roll singer for a while. Not long but he was first. I was there and my parents wouldn't let me listen to him because he was a bad influence and Rock n Roll was the devils music according to the newspapers! They still print a lot of rubbish now but I don't but them anymore.
From the looks of this clip, the talented Mr Steele was quite the rage in the UK at the time. A bobbysoxer's dreamboat! I was only familiar with him from his appearance in American movies like "The Happiest Millionaire" and "Finian's Rainbow'. I hope that he is well & happy these days. Thanks for posting this! :)

A preposterous and absurd little man.

Tommy Steele Britains "first" Rock "N" Roll star. Pre-dates Marty and Cliff. However, Billy Fury for me, remains "our" best Pop/Rock Star.

Real historical facts
Elvis first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel", released in January 1956
Steele's first single "Rock With The Caveman," released in October, 1956
What was Elvis's first UK hit? Blue Suede Shoes reached number 9 in the UK on 15 June 1956.
Elvis charted before Steele in the UK.
Feel free to do some research if you think I'm wrong.

all die kreischenden Backfische, Tommy war ein Held in der damaligen Zeit, weit vor Cliff Richard, und nicht so "weichgespült" !

A clone.
Couldn'r play guitar. (Bert Weedon did that off stage)
Slurrs his words because his manager Larry Parbes thought that ws "Ameircan".
Pathetic, contrived and died a death.
12 month cockney wonder.
Cliff Rihard and the Drifters were a far better and more sincere imitaion of US rock groups.
Thank God we only had to wait 4 more years for the Beatles.

As the youngest of 7 and at the age of 59 this song says it all to me. I like Guy Mitchell`s version too. Stan

Mitchell did a great job, but I think these 2 versions are neck to neck. Yeah I see what you mean, it was an end to an era.

That blonde girl at 1.58 is absolutely adorable, and it's odd to think she'd be in her late 60s or early 70s now!
