Enjoying the music. Thanks to the internet I both get to listen and to remember the first time I hear it. Theme music from a BBC serial of the same name in 1961. The mood it set outlasted the show.
Music and smells bring back so many memories. This one brings to mind one of my childhood buddies. He has long since gone on, but they say as long as you are remembered by someone you are never truly dead. RIP Larry P. Radikopf.
My paternal grandmother (God Rest her Soul) loved this song. I remember when my parents and siblings would go to her house on Sundays in South Jersey for dinner and this song was always playing. She has been gone many years now but when I hear this song I think of her always. This song was elegant just like she was.
Paintings and soothing music are lovely. I, too, can remember the incoming and outgoing tide while walking and playing on the beach daily in Santa Cruz in the summers of the war years l941 - l945. This Acker Bilk piece really takes me back.
Isn't it ironic how music from our Parents era, as youngsters, we couldn't stand and music from our era, our Parents couldn't stand. Now we are our Parents age and music from their era doesn't sound so bad after all, yet we can't stand some of today's music just as much as young people today can't stand our era of music and the cycle continues.
First tune I fondly remember, walking along the beach at Santa Cruz summer of '63 during the Kennedy Administration w/my first transistor radio plugged in my ear...was 9 years old, yet recall it like it was yesterday...simpler times for a youngster.
May I recommend the book 'A Pop Revolution, the transatlantic music scene 1965 to 1969' by the invisible man. The author is a big fan of this instrumental.
A most beautifl song the 4 who dislike must be village idiot,s or brain dead moroon,s with oatmeal for brain cell,s. This is true music by a truely gifited man. Not that filthy sicking jungle noise called rapping produced by brain dead be bop,s who have no talnet and never will. Or that whinng country music if today,s so called artist. came face to face with true class and elgance. They would run like scared dog,s wetting on thhemselves taill between their leg,s down the sidewalk and yelping.
My wife is significantly younger than I am, but she really enjoyed this rendition of the song, as do I. This is without a doubt my favorite version of it! Thank you so much for posting this...I truly appreciate it.
Such a beautiful song. BigBad 47 wrote above all you can say. Life was simple, people were friendly and helpful, not everything was about a dollar. How have we progressed so much but lost so much with humanity. I am so grateful to have lived those years with such fond memories.
Do you know what Women and Ocean have in common? Women gives life...and the ocean is were life begins... that is why..these paintings are very lovely, becoz of the two figures..whenever a Man would see a woman walking along the shore, his heart begins to pump and nothing can stop him from his emotions... " THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CREATION OF GOD" Women and the Oceans!
I have always loved this song even as a child. This was my grandmother's favorite song and it was always playing on the record player when my family went to her house on Sundays. She has been gone quite a while but I miss her so much. I know I will see her one day. I LOVE YOU GRANDMA.
We had the passing of my grandfather today and this was his favourite song. And I love it too. He was a fine man, full of smiles. We had it played live and it never sounded so good. Such a lovely sound.
Whenever I hear this song, I yearn for a more innocent time of first love and teenagers gathered around an LP stereo record player or meeting at the drug store soda fountain with one of those bubbling Wurlitzer juke boxes playing.
Such a lovely melody. Sunday afternoons my Dad would pull out his albums and we would sit around the living room listening to great music like this. All was right with the world. Brings back some great memories for me. Thanks so much for posting.
It takes me back to a place and time where life was so very simple. No TV, no cell phones, no computers, just music, friends, some of the greatest loves of my life fortunately for me one of them stuck with me through it all and we are still together. Wish we could go back just for a little while. Wouldn't it be grand!!!! Would love to take our grand kids back just for a day or two!!
There are many versions of Stranger on the Shore by Acker Bilk. I like this version the best. Does anyone know which CD has this version? I bought a couple of Acker Bilk's CDs and they are not the same as this version. I think this one was the very first released by Bilk. All the subsequent ones do not measure up to this one. This is just perfect! Thanks for posting.
To be lured back to a time when innocence was who we were and not simply what we sought or longed for -- children laughing, the simplicity of life and it's pleasures, all the way to the here and now when something as beautiful as this invokes the tears of all I've come to become and all I've ever yearned for.
Never have I heard anything so beautiful in my life and that it brings new meaning to my life, eternally grateful for those I've loved, lost and have yet to discover.
@TheBigBad47 it does indeed harken back to a time when we did not need to have instananeous bad news pumped at us because it was someones right to do so. We felt free enough, to just be masters of the ground we stood over at that time and moved when we felt like it.
Artist please!...please?...and I don't mean Mr. Acker Bilk...he is/was awesome. I glanced quickly through all the comments but failed to zero in on any mention of the artist who did all the paintings included in the video...please advise. Thank you so much for the great post...Tunesmith
This makes me want to buy another clarinet. I used to play this song and it made me feel so good as the notes flowed out. Thanks for the upload of a true classic.
This was played at my grandads funeral ;( God this brings back sad memories. He died a week before christmas 2009 I gotta say it was the shitest christmas ever. But good song.
time marches on like the waves pounding the far shore.at the time all remains the same but with the passage of time even the rockey shore gives way to a sandy beach.time changes all for better or for worst.
First shown on British Television in 1961. It was an instant hit. I can just remeber the series. It ran over five weeks at thirty minutes an episode. I was thirteen at the time. How times have changed. Now in my 60s but still a child at heart.
@bilicvit I can remember the series , I was in my early teens and think I fell in love with the french girl who was the "stranger on the shore " in the TV series , and coming from somerset Acker was a local hero . Beautiful music and a well done video . A Bath , UK expat .
Thank you for posting this, I remember my granddad playing this to me when I was a kid and it still sounds great 30 years later.
I really like the paintings you illustrate this song with. \there is one of a girl on a beach with her back to the painter at 2:28 - I'd love to know who it's by and would b very grateful if you could tell me :)
Brought tears to my eyes with the melody and pictures. Only a dream I can dream for again one day. I don,t know what more to say other than it all touches my heart deeply for some reason unknown.
i remember looking onto the beach at Blackpool out of a window in the tower and seeing one person by himself, just as this record was being played in 1963 .very thought provoking.
I remember this being a very popular song when it first came out. Got tremendous airplay. It is a beautiful and haunting tune, yet the arrangement sounds schmaltzy to our contemporary ears. However, it has held up well over the decades, and is still as endearing as it was in 1962. Maybe moreso...
If you love this song, also listen to Wonderland By Night by Bert Kampfert here on YT from a similar time period. The haunting instrumentals like this always tug at me. I'm reminded of Rutger Hauer's final words at the end of Bladerunner: "When I die, all these wornderful memories will die with me, like tears amid the raindrops". Sad.
Hey I'm 54 years old and this was the first record I ever put on a record deck when I was 5 or 6. years old.
Incredible how the memory works and guess what closely followed. Some band called The Beatles and I Wanna hold your hand. Pure magic as Adjue says...especially when you're pissed
@bilicvit Thanks so very much for this beautiful piece that I have never forgotten since I was a teenager. This have been one of my favourites and I have never got tired of listening to this romantic tune. God bless you! cdr_wong
Maybe the most beautiful and soothing song I have ever heard. As a little boy many years ago I awoke to it playing on the radio in the middle of the night. It has stayed with me.
I too have just been Acker Bilked, what a fantastic tune, I first heard this grand composition in the mid 70s when I was just leaving school, It's stayed with me ever since, great images here too, a video well put together, Congrats! Cheers, Patrick.
The performer billed himself, most know, as MISTER Acker Bilk. He was also the composer of this piece (unless I've been misled). "Stranger" is surely about someone ashore (at a lake, I imagine) catching the eye of a prospective love in a boat, by the tune's melancholy probably on a still-sunlit summer evening. It's a great piece that I'd hate not to have been written. (Then again, I can't think of a single unwritten melody that I miss.) I'm glad to have been Bilked.
age does not qualify when it comes to music like this! i hate my job, hate my life at times as a result but music like this makes me realise why im alive! thank God for it!
Hi Qwilleranj. Finely someone agrees with me when it comes to music. :-) Well, I was never able to buy that record because I was unable to find who played it until a year or two ago, when I heard it on television. One of those CD collections (5 CDs) that they sale on TV: Lifetime of Romance. I had to have it and so I did. It was the best money I ever spent on music. All the best to you, Domingos
If I am not mistaken, this is the original recording. One of my favorites ever and yes I'm that old, but I was young when I first listen to this song. One of those that you absolutely have to have; to me anyway.
I would really like to know where I could get the print or painting of the girl at '24 secs' so I can hang it on my wall.? To me she represents the beauty that is women. So innocent and illuminating. Coupled with the music enhances it, but regardless of the music she stirs my emotions. So beautiful.
This music was used in a great scene from THE FLAMINGO KID when Jeffrey (Matt Dillon) is having a romantic stroll on the beach with his girl and they're watching the ships go by. Everytime my ship leaves port, this music is in my head! Great tune!
Memories of playing in the street in the 1960's on a Sunday, the smell of roast beef cooking on Sunday dinners and hearing this belting out on radios!!!
Here I stand watching the tide go out so alone and blue, dreaming dreams of you I watched your ship as it sailed out to the sea, taking all my dreams, and taking all of me The sighing of the waves, the wailing of the wind, the tears in my eyes burn, pleading my love, return Why oh why, must I go on like this shall I just be a lonely stranger on the shore?
One of my all time favorites. Beautifully done video to a great tune. I seem to recall American Patrol by him as well. Maybe you could post that if possible?

Can I suggest that you reconsider have this song at your funeral, as your son would probably never be able to listen to it again.

Hey I'm 54 years old and this was the first record I ever put on a record deck when I was 5 or 6. years old.
Incredible how the memory works and guess what closely followed. Some band called The Beatles and I Wanna hold your hand. Pure magic as Adjue says...especially when you're pissed

memories! - aaaaaaaaaaaaah.... pure magic what they can conjure!
research claims that after the sense of olfaction (smell), sound is the next in line of the longest lasting memories throughout our lives...
frankrupert@ you are proving them right!

@frankrupert
The Beatles and Acker Bilks were on the same bill on the Royal Iris cruise ferry sailing up and down the River Mersey.

Maybe the most beautiful and soothing song I have ever heard. As a little boy many years ago I awoke to it playing on the radio in the middle of the night. It has stayed with me.

Hey, this was in Mr. Holland's Opus where Mr. Holland taught Gertrude to play the sunset. Such a lovely scene.

super tune and video. This isn't an instrumental about hot tropical shores, its an instrumental about windswept, temperate ones.

Absolutely beautiful. I was watching the Season Two Finale of Mad Men and was enchanted (again) by this piece. Thanks for sharing.

This is probably the most beautiful video to this lovely instrumental by Acker Bilk. An instrumental allows us to create our on story.
Thank you!!!

MinhasDores 2 years ago
I agree with you MinhasDores, i was young too when it came out but i had to have it. I still have the 45, lol.

I agree. It brings tears to my eyes. I was in band when this came out and all the sax players were playing it too. Such sweet times, so long ago...

I would really like to know where I could get the print or painting of the girl at '24 secs' so I can hang it on my wall.? To me she represents the beauty that is women. So innocent and illuminating. Coupled with the music enhances it, but regardless of the music she stirs my emotions. So beautiful.

A gorgeous, romantic hit from 1962. No wonder our nation was still in the Baby Boom during the early sixties. Hahaha.
Beautiful pictures...thanks.

This music was used in a great scene from THE FLAMINGO KID when Jeffrey (Matt Dillon) is having a romantic stroll on the beach with his girl and they're watching the ships go by. Everytime my ship leaves port, this music is in my head! Great tune!
