This is a classic example why I've always liked Diana Ross. Here, the special magic of her voice shines. Her singing is direct, without any unecessary riffs and improvistions, and at the same time extremely powerful and emotional. This is one of my favorite if not my favorite rendition of this song on Youtube.
@sea1song I completely agree. She sings the melody and beautifully interprets the lyric. She does not resort to all the histrionics that other singers use to cover their inability to sell a song just with their voices. I think DR is up there with Sinatra when it comes to phrasing and putting a song's message over. Long may she reign!
Gorgeous, elegant, refined and at her best. I'm not sure I like the gown, though. It's very frumpy. The neck is too high and the dolman sleeves are too much. The pattern is generic. It's too old for her at this time. Maybe she wanted something somber given the occasion.
@dianaross2 People who were around throughout her career know that Diana Ross was a talented vocal stylist... I remember when she performed this on the Jerry Lewis Telethon and …"Diana Ross Red hot rhythm & blues TV special” came on {with/ LL COOL J Etta James, Billy Dee Williams, Little Richard, Bernadette Peters}, her talents were praised greatly! Ms.Ross has earned everything good that comes to her and then some! ~ Bryan O’Quinn
@dianaross2 Your words are so true. I would also urge people to check out YouTube "We Shall Overcome" by DR. It is one of the loveliest and most astonishing performances I have ever seen. It is in Budapest, Hungary, in an outdoor arena, and honors Dr. Martin Luther King. It is Diana at her best -- and her best is better than anyone else.
i play this song when i would put my kids to sleep they listen to this song great song by her only
