"ruining the mood of the song"? please. tweedy is having a hell of a time playing the tune, and he (w/ bennett) wrote the damn thing. this is an excellent performance and an appropriately enthusiastic response. who cares if people are clapping/singing along? get over your emo/hipster/conceited self and enjoy the [gasp] reassuring and comforting sides that exist in the song, as evidenced by this performance. to shackle this song to one mood is an insult to its genius.
i think Tweedy loves crowd participation. But when the "clapping" starts to soon, your in for a long hall. Crowds should know better, Especially at the Vic. Come on yuppies, listen to your girlfriends.
Regarding the clapping...for me, it completely upsets the mood of the song. Clappers aren't musicians and can't keep perfect beats, throwing off the musicians sense of timing. Jeff was clearly affected enough by it at the beginning to make a joking allusion to the clappers, and instead of getting it, they continued. It also sounds like a very poignant and emotional song...is clapping even appropriate?
this song was not on the original Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. As a New Yorker, it sounds so clearly like a 9-11 song. 9-11 happened between the free internet release of the original YHF and the Nonesuch one. Does anyone know?
YHF was completely written, recorded, mastered and submitted to Warner months before 9/11. There isn't a single note on it that was modified between then and its eventual release on Nonesuch.
It certainly sounds spookily like an allusion to that day, but it's purely coincidental.

Clapping makes the baby Jesus cry.
Singing louder than the performer allows the terrorists to win.

I think the clapping/crowd singing goes well with this song. But no one ever claps through a whole thing. Who's got the energy?

The degree of professionalism Jeff has, well, he feeds off of clapping. Aside from a physical attack you're not throwing him off. Jeff is a legend.
