i bought one of the portable forges and one problem i had with it is that a big lump of coke builds up over the air hole that the air comes out of.keep on forging
You can buy them new (google "anvils") and they aren't cheap or you might be able to find one at an antique or flea market.
Generally though, anvils I've seen at antique/junk stores are cracked, rounded-over, or otherwise generally pretty worn out. If you're just starting out, try to get your hands on a one-food length of railroad rail.
If smithing is something you find you want to get serious about, you may want to just purchase a very good, new anvil.
The horseshoe - shouldn't it be hanged upside down? I heard that the luck falls off if it's hanged the way you did it. And the luck is "catched" if it's hanged the other way. But maybe that's a region believing ;-). Anyway good luck with blacksmithing.
I simply love this. Matbe it was and I don't know but, this could've easily been on TLC or Discovery. This is simply great! Keep up the good work and yer forge hot!
I love your 2 movies Mannie but where is part 2 because i only see part 1 and 3, so if you can put it on the net please because i enjoyed the 2 but the three would be even better.:)
Another popular phrase from blacksmithing is "masterpiece", I believe... For an apprentice to gain his Journeyman status in blacksmithing, his "Master", or teacher, would usually require that he create his own tools as well as a piece to demostrate his knowledge of the craft, or, a "Master" "Piece".
hey mannie! im fascinated by your work. Actually this coming saturday im going to a jr. blacksmith committee. My first object im going to make is a butter spreader. As you might know too I'm not very smart when it comes to this art because im a newbie. If you have any info you are willing to share i would be very greatful. Thanks for taking the time to read this! sincerely, Andrew.
I'm guessing he means clean shaven... What kind of blacksmith wears a suit to the shop? Clean shaven is the only thing I can think of... Well, I've seen that type, a lot actually. A great example of "respectable" looking smiths would be Artisans of the Anvil. My turn, why are so many people in today's world still illiterate?
what was the last thing that you do? it was wax? nice work from greece

Yeah I was told the same thing.
If you hang a horseshoe with the two ends down, your luck will run out.
Those hooks are cool and easy to make.
Conan568 3 years ago
A forge is the one place a horseshoe is supposed to be hung open end down so the luck pours into the forge.

I've got two Horse-shoes at my shop.
One is cemented into the ramp at the front door, and the other is hanging on the wall.
Neither one of them works worth a crap.
The only way I succeed is by effort, and the only luck I have is the bad kind.

What i would really like to see, is HOW YOUR ANVIL WAS MADE.. I have searched all over the WEB, and can find NOWHERE, how an anvil is manufactured.
fishkiller41 3 years ago
anvils are mostly cast from steel and later heat treated.. dont know about new anvils..
varmdal 3 years ago
About the same I think, cast in dies and heat treated.

Andrew,
Good luck to you. The main thing is to just keep practicing at the forge, try and find one simple thing to master.
