  • Great !

  • omg he cracked the C#. Thank god professionals make mistakes :)

  • whats up with all the coughing in the beginning?

  • i'm doing this solo, but I went for a more dark sound. This guy's really amazing though. I might end up changing the way I play it :)

  • not to be a hater but i think i had better sound quality .... his sound is too bright and muffled...needs to be more dark and open for the more traditional sound.....

  • Muito bom, Eric Terwilliger

  • horn sounds just way too wonderful.

  • F. horn is a tricky instrument--the armbisher (misp) is small, one has to have superb breath control and it can 'go' at any time. This is one of the most deservedly beautiful melodies and orchestral solos of all time.

  • Beautiful sound. Very smooth - it takes a lot of control and concentration to play it as slow as this too!

  • местами оркестру следовало бы не заглушать прекрасное волнующе-трепетное соло валторны, а исполнитель-валторнист несомненно выдающийся, хотя и это не предел возможного звучания валторны Спасибо за возможность услышать и сопереживать

  • string players always look like they have parkinson's.

  • @Sevnfurdy LOL

  • From 1:16 first 8 horn tones are identical to John Denver's Annie's Song, right at beginning when he sings " You fill up my senses like a night in (the forest)". It's amazing how much influence classical music had and still has on the modern.

  • Listen to Vladimiro Cainero french horn solo with the Orchestra Carlo Felice Genova Italy for, what I think, is the MOST beautiful rendition of this solo on YouTube!

  • Don't like conductor ! Tempo very lento...

  • Fantastic

  • why am i getting a boner??!

  • Very beautiful solo, bravo! Musical with a rich tone, no compaints (forget the slight clip in the middle, there's a price to be paid for going for it!)

  • In my very personal opinion, this horn solo theme defines the whole Symphony, which is beautiful, indeed. Around 1961, I bought a Harmony LP which made a piano an orchestra full arrangement (a lot longer than the theme itself). I was 10 y.o. and was my first LP, never tranferred it to cassette and was lost when I sent it to be copied to CD (shame!). Also listened it in a live church-organ private interpretation. Should anyone know if it's possible to find anything like this, please post the info

  • What a warm sound :) nice..

  • Idk why but this helps me get rid of stress when it starts to build up

  • 89,000 views are from me...

  • notice their all white

  • @ChIcOMiCo95 look at the bass section

  • @ChIcOMiCo95 asian bassist

  • @ChIcOMiCo95 thats because this is not cheap ass shaking hip hop

  • I love this piece so much

  • i play the f horn!

  • absolutely beautiful.

  • NICE

  • 1:19

Jacky Chan plays second horn !

  • @cowcowkaukau rasist comment...

  • I will pray for 10 people

  • this is the one of the most beautiful classical music that i have listened so far.

amazing!!! if only i could listen to this in live

  • did he crack a note?????

  • @MDBeatles yup he did

  • @idgit2442 I just did the same thing! (switched from trumpet). Did you have to majorly change your embouchure?

  • Around 2:28, tiny little slip! Very impressive though, anyone know what horn he used for it?

  • I played this piece in a horn competition my senior year in high school. !966. I've forgotten how many horns were in the competition, but I placed first. Horn is a difficult instrument to play, & it takes LOTS of practice.I came to horn from trumpet, & was always glad I did.It is, I think, the most beautiful instrument.

  • does anybody know what type of horn and mouthpiece that the horn soloist was playing on?

  • @pv2007frog

uh, paxman 20 i think. or some kind of paxman. and idk which mouthpiece :\\

  • Looks like I`ve found a good interpretation of this Horn Solo. I`ll discard the one I had .

  • @Mackchai Boston Symphony, Pierre Monteux conducting - 1958 recording. James Stagliano plays the horn solo so hauntingly well. It has stuck with me ever since I first heard it. Inspired me to become a horn player...still hope to play it as well some day.

  • That tone is so warm. Jealous.

  • I am playing this as a Solo Peice for Solo Compitition. Im a 8th Grader, Face to Palm. I cant do this!

  • @TheGuyWhoKnowsNot good luck, im going to be attempting that as well, though im only in 6th grade so i will wait awhile, im actually 1st chair, and i im very good for my age, and just saying, would you happen to be taught by Mr. Agan, because the solo & ensemble competition is coming up? If so i bet your name is nick

  • I think when tchikovsky hears this, he is proud of...What a piece of music, and the soloist..wow!

  • I have to admire anyone who does this well. Tried it as a jr in HS. The fingerings are not such a big deal, but to get the intonation right on each note is really a challenge.

  • I would like more vibrato.

  • @llamawizard No vib on horn! The tone colour of the instrument makes it unessessary

  • My dream is to someday play that solo as beautifully as this

    Starting french horn this year!

  • @ThanksfortheObvious Here's a tip that I didn't get when I was starting- Air. The French horn needs SO much air to have a rich sound.

Practice a LOT on this instrument, you will see results.

If you don't have a method book, find one. They will help you with technique.

Audition for every single stupid little competition and honor band you can find in your area. You will have a drive to improve constantly.

Ask your director how you can improve personally. It really helps to have a good director.

  • conductor looks stressed, haha

  • AHH! :) what a horn player

  • i love that instrument.

whats the thing with synesthesia though

  • Has anyone tried putting words to this solo so u can play it better? Like seriously, try singing (in ur head...duh): "I want my mommy, I want my daddy, I want to go back home and sleep all day" on the main theme of the solo. I swear to god it'll work. And when you tell people the secret to how u played it so beautifully they will laugh their ass off. And the lyrics are very true when u try to play it.

    Best horn solo ever!

  • @SlashRoks04 Its because you're putting emotion into your music (: Thats one of the key things to playing well.

  • @SlashRoks04

One of my instructors once told me to put these words to it:

"Darling, I love you. I really love you. You'll never know just how much I love you."

Yes, it really does work! I get just the right emotion out of the solo whenever I think about this when I play it. :)

  • @crystalm110 That's desperately superficial...

  • absolutely transcendent

  • Slower solos are imo harder to play well that faster ones. Its very difficult to keep a good tone over notes drawn out that long. Blazing fast solos may be harder to play, but slow ones like this are harder to play WELL

  • tooooooo slooooow!!!

  • if Celibidache beleves in reencaration he will born again as a turtle.. or a snail.....

  • à une minute 10 richard enconina qui admire sergiu .........magnifique

  • Tchaikovsky pure genius who else uses a french horn for a solo.

  • @DizzyDan12 I agree with you about Tchaikovsky being a genius, but there are quite a few horn solos out there, my friend. :]

  • too slow... but ok!

    Anyone knows the recording year?

  • The celists and bassists look really bored at the begining. The actual horn solo was amazing though!

  • too slow

  • Si Belle ca!

  • Great sound, great phrasing, great playing, especially when presented with such a slow tempo from the conductor.

  • Not really a mistake @ 2:30.

What we Americans call a "clam".

    He got there didn't he??

  • i love playing this=]

  • riiiiiiiiiiiiicolaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • cut the coughing in the beginnign -_- its an orchestra not a cough-off...

  • hey audience, can you cough some more?

  • chi è questo cornista??

  • The horn solo was always a masterfully composed splendor. As a high school oboist, I am prejudiced about the beautiful oboe solo that follows, with the horn obligato , which was left out here.

  • Amazing rendition!

  • The slower, the better? Me nuh tink so...

  • One of my favourite pieces. too bad about the one slip up

  • What a beautiful piece.. i hope to rise to the levels of these amazing horn players, it is an amazing instrument and i absolutly love playing it, thanks for sharing this song with us.

  • too slow1

  • is it just me or do the cellos look really small, too small for the players???

  • That was beautiful...This really helped me for my auditions in symphonic band. It showed me the tempo and tone quality. Thank you so very much!

  • beautiful.

  • Yes, mistake at 2:30--- BUT, as a horn a player learning this excerpt I must say, I love his tone. So resonant. Not brassy like a trumpet or bassy like a trombone--- but down the center of the horn... he sounds like a Horn player! So great.

  • Very beautifully orchestrated. Great distinction in cello crescendo. French Horn here is played most resoundingly!! and very beautiful.

(Just a humble observation from an amateur: mistake at 2:30 ?)

  • yes! there was! noticed it too.

but wow beautiful sound. wish i still played...

  • i heard it too, but i really cant begrudge such an amazing player that one note bobble.

    he's so amazing

  • This is so slow I was able to read all the comments, then come back to the top of the screen , and the excerpt was only about 2/3 done.

  • the basses.......

  • haha, quick everybody cough!

  • LOL!

  • incredible...

  • очень тихо

  • The cellos at the begining, oh my god what a nice sound....

  • very very very very nice sound!!!BRAVO!!!

  • so beautiful. why must we be bombarded by crap mainstream music when such beautiful music like this exists? wonderful piece ^_^

  • i agree

  • That is the tone that i WISH i had....

  • One of the most nerve-wracking solos in the literature. It starts with the strings hanging around for seven measures, just waiting for the horn to show up. I try to psych myself by saying "It's just another tune." But a gorgeous one. Terrific job, with no short cuts.

  • FANTASTICO

  • Sorry for my russian.

  • bravissimo!!!

  • OMG! srsly im in my youth orchestra and paly semi proffesionally , but if i ccould play that solo with only little "blip" as you like to call it id be bloody satisfied. His internation and tone is flawless and the solo is beautiful.

  • You can do it better? He does a beautiful job!

  • the cello chords in the beginning are amazing.

  • great tone and warmth

  • This is such a stupid comment. This solo is VERY difficult to play well - also, knows or cares what "vasubius" is. Also, adults use the word "piece" no "peace" - I know they are the same in your brain, but not in the English language.

  • @ThirdWorldHorn This piece is very difficult to get the intonation correct. To me that was really the crux of getting the whole mood of it right.

  • your comments are simply.. not very educated. I believe you mean Vesuvius? Well yes that is it's own level of difficulty however I would have a much easier time playing Vesuvius with the High A and B rips opposed to playing Tchaikovsky's 5th with such a beautiful tone in such an exposed environment.

  • slow solos are much more difficult than fast solos. all of your heart can be poured into a solo like this one with the sole intent of making it the most beautiful piece you have ever played, making it count and playing it right whereas i tend to see a fast solo as just technique and not letting in room for a beautiful tone quality and timbre used in a more emotional piece. but, that's my opinion lol

  • hey, fast solos are cool too

  • yes, I'm sure that your soloist is better than Terwilliger

  • Это издевательство над этой музыкой.

В таком темпе получилось ужасное упражнение по гармонии.

  • Terwilliger is the MAN!

  • Comment removed

  • Я довольно уверен это. Огорченно мой русский плох.

  • Nice sound, but I don't like the phrasing, but who am I to say that ;-)

a 17 year old boy from the netherlands!

  • small slip :) B-C#-D-E became B-C#-c-D-E :)

but very beautiful. i thank you for the pleasant music

  • WRONG! If your going to make a comment about a mistake, make sure its correct! The mistake is in the ascending scale pattern by three notes.

  • INCREDIBLY SLOW! But what choice does the hornist have? I would like to have heard more expression from the soloist, but that is subjective. Maintaining the integrity of the tempo is challenging at this VERY SLOW pace.

  • Thank you Mr. Terwilliger for your wonderful horn playing. So beautiful . . .

  • Very nicely done, even if extra slow :-)

  • Thanks for that relatively benign description of the imperfection. After listening to it I must say that I had forgotten how SLOW Celibidache wanted it. I have never had to play it as slow for other conductors. For hornplayers, in 1982 I switched from the Paxmann shown on this video, to an Alexander 103same mouthpiece however, a Holton-Farkas DC. One more thing, that is not a martial arts black belt sitting next to me. It is Timothy Jones who is now principal horn in the LSO in London.

  • 1 of 2) By (happy!)chance, I discovered this video just two days ago in a Celibidache-devoted facebook group. I've listened it many times since then! (there is no need of adjetives!). Your "fluff" is the probe you are "human" and, of course, live music suffers from this kind of "imperfections" which makes it an "unique" moment (as Celi, + or -, said...)

BTW, I was fortunate of attending his last concerts in Madrid (Brck's 4th&8th) in 1993(?)with Münchner Phil. and I'm still "shaken"... ;-)

  • and 2 of 2) I'm a (more or less) "serious" amateur brass player. Some time ago I received some lessons from Enrique Ferrando, who has been the principal (and great!) trombone of the ONE (Orq. Nacional de España) since 1972. Once I asked him about Celi (he conducted many concerts in Spain during 60's and 70's): he told me: "to have the luck of playing many times under Celibidache has been the most important thing in my life as a musician": do you think the same, Eric? ;-) Many thanks!

  • Eric, Wolfgang Tomböck told me that you had the sound on the double horn that came closest to the Vienna horn and that I should listen to you play sometime. After watching this vid I can only say that he was spot on. Absolutely beautiful, bravo! Please send links to other vids of your playing. Thanks.

  • Sublime sound Eric, absolutely gorgeous. I also love the clip when you're playing Bruckner 7 with Thielemann. Do you still play on the Holton DC? No matter how many "custom" mouthpieces I try, I always go back to the Holton. Quick response and beautiful tone/control coupled w/ the N series 8D I play.

  • He came to bloomington for a few weeks in the fall of 07 and he still still using a holton MP iirc.

  • @Ericwilliamterwillig Hello Mr. Terwillinger, you sound amazing. I do have question for you, sir, and that is, after you switched to an Alex 103, were you able to still get that lovely warm, rich sound that you got from the Paxman? Can you please tell me some of the differences and advantages of an Alexander 103. Thanks a lot!

  • I heard a little fluff around 2:30 but not matter. Gorgeous tone! I couldn't imagine playing that in a performance. Just imagine the nerves.

  • That guy is a magnificent musician! His solo gives me goosebumps

  • What a fabulous horn player. His sound is the closest to the full, resonant quality of a Vienna Horn I've ever heard coming from a modern double horn. The phrasing and projection are also magnificent. A great example for aspiring horn players

  • that horn solo was glorious.

  • celi and the munich philharmonic are a great team :)

  • i think it should be just a bit faster. Anyway: the horn player is really good!

  • Marvelous.

  • Absolutely incredible solo execution. This slow tempo really pulls the raw emotion out of Tchaikovsky and the horn solo so much when watching this it made me tear up.

  • i am sure tht he is jacky chan 0.0

  • Is that Jacky Chan(the one sitting next to the horn principal)????

  • hahhahaa

    you are really funny!!!

  • wow...what a GORGEOUS sound!!!

  • Lovely playing but way too slow. Still, that's conductors for you, they can screw pretty much anything up with that little white stick!

  • dean I disagree, I believe for this to be played to its full beauty, it has to be played at a tempo like this.

  • As a retired professional horn player, of many years experience, it is my considered opinion that the vast majority of conductors are inept to the point of incredulity. You, of course, are entitled to your subjective opinion and I respect that. However, overindulgent tempi do not equal musical majesty, this buffoon is a menace.

  • ¿que es el tempo para ti, como musico? Incluso tÚ, a pesar de ser un musico profesional quizás no lo llegaste a comprender.

  • I would have to agree. I am a retired professional horn player as well. I think that if I had to attempt to play this tempo, I would probably feel that the conductor was trying to sabotage my performance. BTW, the horn player here has amazing breath/tone control.

  • Beautiful, just beautiful!!!!!!!

  • very beautiful!but in munich not play with alexander 103?or paxman?in this video is paxman m20...very beautiful sound!!!
