Dan certainly learned how to entertain the crowd with his words as well as his music! He was the definition of a "Class Act". They come any better than him. If only the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would recognize that.
I first heard of Mr Dan in 1974 when I was dating a certain lady. She didn't like my tastes in music since I didn't like hard rock and roll. She gave me the album "Souvenirs" since she knew I liked "mellow" music. I have to thank that girl from the bottom of my heart because she allowed me to get to know one of the greatest musicians of our time. Dan was a huge influence on my life. Thank you, young lady, where ever you are!
I still love to stop by to watch this.. thank god someone like you shared this with everyone.." that guitar case better be there after the show .. just like the old days.. I have a better hat !! He sure could banter right back to the audience.. I just wished I was there that night.. I surely would of screamed out some comment to him! Love ya Dan.. miss you !
Dan Fogelberg was one of the most gifted singer, songwriter, musicians of all time. I surely miss him. I saw him last here in Minnesota in 1997, the year of this tour. I drove to Madison, Wisc. to see him in 2003. It would be the last time I would see him alive. I feel so sorry for the youth now that they don't have someone like this to listen to. Mark in Northeast Minneapolis
@montersmama I saw him in 2004 in Denver and it was his last concert tour, that is one my fav memories, the audience loved him! they stood clapping forever after his encore. His concerts were so long and so amazing! I never missed seeing him live--the absolute best in my eyes and heart
I saw him twice in concert. To say that he was the greatest isn't enough. He filled my life and I will never feel more blessed to have seen him in person. I was front row center in San Diego and my neck was soar for a week. But I got more out of that night than just music. He was and will always be the best ever and my all time favorite singer song writer. The world lost a true poet and I lost my only music connection.
interesting..i have been a urology nurse for 20 years in surgery, and my favorite songwriter, who happens to be a favorite singer, dies of prostate cancer..the irony is indescribable
Thank you so very very much for this! To hear Dan talk and laugh with him; then hear him speak from his heart. On to an amazing song from Dan, playing solo on his acoustic 12 string, singing his feelings and thoughts to us. A True Treasure! I absolutely love this! A million stars! Dan, for me, remains unsurpassed, and lives Ever On through this (The Reach) and his many other gifts of music and song he shared while here.
i saw him play and interact.. closely w/ the audience as he was 1hr late flying in from alberquerque... he made up for it!!!! Awesome Man Awesome music!!!
Thanks to my parents, who are geniuses, Dan has been the dearest sound to me. Always makes me think of my childhood, and how his music has inspired me to become a musician and lover of music alike.
Yes - let their lives be a lesson - and in John Denver's case - FILL THE GAS TANKS IN YOUR AIRPLANE - before you take off!!!!! Always a pretty good idea!!!!!
This was my favorite Dan Fogelberg song ever! I saw him in concert 6 times over the course of the years, and he sang this several times. I still miss him, and John Denver who he dedicated the song to.
Never heard how Illionisian Dan Fogelberg came to love and live in Maine, but this gorgeous song is testament to that. This acoustic version is wonderful - many thanks for this!
Jacques Cousteau and John Denver were very much alike!! Both left their families in total disarray - without a will - both had children with different women - few knew that Cousteau had children with his girlfriend (and supported them) while still married to his wife! Heros maybe maybe not!! Maybe both thought that a written will - was nothing more than an invitation to the Grim Reaper that your life is complete and settled and the time has come!!!
Miss him. Sad this hero left us to go join John & Jacques. Dan, you were right there alongside me during my college years. I will never forget your music accompanying the best years of my life.
@kekebits SO funny you mentioned John and Jaques. John Denver and Dan Fogelberg were and always will be the single most influencial musical loves of my life, now both taken too soon. If I get to heaven, I so hope I get to hear a duet! I was watching John Denver videos earlier, Some with Jaques, and I've been having quite a good cry!
Keep watching this time and time again. I love Dan's grace with the final strokes on the guitar - the way he removes his left hand from the neck is a strong and gentle movement all at the same time. He also appears to play a final harmonic which we don't hear.
Phenomenal Humor, good interaction with the audience, quick wit....not to mention one of my ATF songs!! What a loss last year. Way too young. I never saw him in person, and after watching this video, I am hating myself for it. Had the chance to see him 2 yrs. ago at Mtn. Winery and didn't....oops...what a mistake.
I have enjoyed Dan's music since the early 1970's and was saddened by his early departure. I love the sound of the 12 string. In this song he has tuned his guitar to a "D" modal, ie: double dropped "D". Sounds incredible!
I am sure Dan Fogelberg knew John Denver and they may have even been friends. They have many of the same interests and values and likely were fans of each others music. Kindred spirits are just that way...
Wow! His voice sounds really great. It sounds more operatic than when he was younger. I love how he sings with just a guitar too. He didn't need alot of backup.
Just found this...my favorite Dan Fogelberg song which he dedicated to my favorite singer, John Denver just 13 days after John's death. This acoustic version is outstanding...sorry I missed this show since I live only 100 miles away...THANKS!!!
After watching this video, I noticed the date and place, and realized I was at this show! Out of curiosity I dug out my old ticket stub - the price was $45 for a third row seat. I would have willingly paid more. The Reach is one of my all time favorites and according to Dan (Portrait) one he "dearly loved".
I paid around $50 for the 2002 concert , which billed as a 30 year Anniversary and it was solo and band.! I had a great seat and could had paid for more if the price was higher. His concert was about the music, not the fluff that most expect when going to a concert. If I want smoke, I could had gone to local bar for free!!.
Wow! I'm So Glad I happened upon this. I've heard Dan speak in much earlier years ('70's?) where he seems to be such a shy young musician, talking & playing his music as he did here. This shows how much his voice "grew" singing live as well as being much more confident of himself as he spoke; yet still, Dan's humility comes thru. Thus to me Dan was always grateful to those who listened to him speak & loved his music. A wonderful man / incredible musician, who will always be w/me thru his music.
Did you hear about the dyslexic devil worshipper?? Whats the answer Dan says?? I cant make it out!! Anyway--I LOVE to see him so engaging witht the audience!! What a guy!!! He was the best!!
Did you hear about the dyslexic devil worshipper? He sold his soul to Santa!...............Did you hear about the dyslexic atheist? He didn't believe in DOG!
What a great little gem this one is!! Everything is here, our hero, ( I love his mention of and quick skyward glance to other heroes) his amazing sense of humor, his relaxed, comfortable banter with the audience, and of course that face, that 12-string, that voice, and that very special song that means even more to us since his last birthday.
How funny you were! Concerned about his 12 string not having a casket! LOL Throw the wooden buddy out Dan, and give us the case!!. I'll throw in another $50.00 (that would doubled my cost of the concert ticket) Dan was one of the most generous artist for the cost of concert tickets. He did not charge nearly what he could had..You got a lot of bang out of those bucks!!
I am trying to expose my kids to the genius that was Dan Fogelberg. In this day and age, it is rare to find someone with his talent. He sang my life. I believe we'll never see another like him. R.I.P. Dan.
Just ran across this..... WOW... thank you once again! I especially am awestruck when he plays his 12 string guitars.... absolutely beautiful! Wish he played all his music on those. Can't say enough good things! Fantastic song, I can relate; I am an avid sailor as well.... and I have visited coastal Maine just once, beautiful! Ever On!
Love Dan's thought processes at the beginning. You can almost see the joke enter his head, with a slight smile at 0.02. Then he takes a couple of seconds to compose himself (trying to keep a straight face!) just before delivery. He is also very quick with his repartee later on with the audience. He is SO relaxed! I would love to know what was said that made him really laugh at 2.05.
Sandandtheforam, I am enjoying your descriptions of these vids SO MUCH! Thank you! Please keep them coming! You see and hear things I have either missed or want to go back and see for myself again! I recently went deaf and now have a cochlear implant so I am not "hearing " the comments like I desperately want to, and you and the others have helped me more than you know! I can still "hear" music with it, if I knew it before, and believe me, I luckily had Dan's songs memorized before it happened!
Thanks for your very kind comment! I don't always catch what Dan says sometimes so I need to listen very carefully - maybe something to do with the accent LOL !! My hearing is usually pretty acute, so I'll do my best to keep you posted!!
Oh my gosh! I forgot about the 'accent'! I did realize you were 'across the pond' from us, but since we are writing and not speaking I just flat out forgot you hear Dan with an 'accent'. How cool is that? You have an interesting advantage we don't over here! Enjoy!
