Wow, brought back some memories, used to hang out there a lot fr 78-80, played in a band there a couple times , special ed fr governers island, bobby death here......
I hung out in the village from 15 to 20 years old,at Hilley's.. that's was way back in the day,, later became c.b.g.b.s.. best time for cutting school,, went to D.H.S.in Jersey City,N.J. but the village was where it was at...
CBGBS is now a trendy clothes store but it has some interesting pieces left over from cbs, also art on the walls of stars that played there, check it out when visiting NY. I was lucky i did get the chance to get my picture taken outside of cbs before it closed. Lets be honest most original famous clubs close down The Caven for one. but Liverpool they did open a new one. I think I heard that someone has most of the interior of cbs and they are planning to build a new cbgbs in Vegas some time.
i wish cbgb's would be opened again and good music, real music would be played there. many of the greatest are gone, but i'm sure there still are people in my generation who can make good music, nothing like lady gaga or miley curys.
Ok I know that this might be a stupid question but I'm only 19 and from Ireland so I don't really know much about CBGB's except that some of my favourite bands used to play there. Can you visit CBGBs or has it been knocked down for refurbishment?? I'd love to see the place!!
no shit their were alot of bands that made alot of money at cbgb's why didn't they pay hillys 90 grand it would still be open dumb fuckers Blondie she got the money to buy a shit load of cbgb's one for each genera how bout the t-heads shit they made million's cheap fuck's and Patti smith that bitch made a million or two she could of bought her own cbgb's what the fuck is really going on i don't care if you don't like this post you all suck Hippocrates from nyc
@nasty6uldv8 "Blondie she got the money..." First of all, Blondie is not a person, it's the name of a band. Second of all, I think there's a lot more to it than the way you are thinking. Surely, the bands either didn't get the message that it was gonna close down for GOOD if they didn't reach and raise a certain amount of money or they probably weren't aware of it being in so MUCH need in the first place. Plus, Hilly Kristal died too, so it arguably would of shut down sooner or later.,
if i ever threw a concert like woodstock i would name it long live cbgb's Hmm thats a little long any way theres always hope as long as it stilll stands that it will relive its glory one day perhaps when we are gone they will make a museum out of it im surpised no body said to make it a national landmark?
I read Hilly only needed 90 000 bucks to keep the place open and pay his debt. I mean I can understand why people like Patti couldn't help much, but Blondie? come on they are loaded. Have you seen the size of the apartment Chris Stein rents in Soho? cheap bastards...
@Annbeauj - part of the problem was that the people who held the lease were not willing to allow CBGBs to stay. There's great irony in a homeless organization kicking a man out of his home/business...
I used to go to CB's a lot during my teens and of course bands were not nearly as good as the bands that played there in the 70's, but it had an amazing vibe, and you could sense music history was made in that place. Sadly it was another victim of New York's plague: Greedy landlords!
agreed its a disgrace that this place is a shoe store ,, i used to work there asa bouncer 1990s and went to hardcore punk shows in the mid-late 80s ,, lots of memories ,, i cried when it closed
goodbye forever cbgbs!...you will be missed! too many shows..too many drunks nites..and so many memories...also injured body parts due to the pit area oh how i miss you!...R.I.P.
Stop calling us punks... It's a word used by heartless manipulators about music that lifts up the hearts of those who give everything they have to it... Its a therm bassed in fassion and satanism and everyhting thats rotten about rock n roll

DONT LET THE SPIRIT OF ROCK DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!
Nothing in life was ever as exciting as going down those steps into that place. Early on with 30 other people, later on with hundreds. It is amazing that so much influential stuff could come out of a place like that, but that's when New York was great.
The number of really, truly, legandary rock clubs can be counted on one hand, and CB's is on the top 5 of all great rock club lists. The place was a total, foul dump but I wouldn't trade all of my memories of that shithole for anything...Thanks fo the tribute !!
froggy's right. It was a dump. It also was, for a while, the most revolutionary, exciting place on earth. In '75,'76,'77,I remember the butterflies in my stomach as we walked up past the opera house to get to the door by Bleecker and Bowery. You couldn't get that feeling listening to all the other crap there was then. And the music that came out of there influences a lot more of what you hear today than most people know.
that documentary about the ramones was really good, Dee Dee talking about driving in from Queens to see the Dolls.... that must have been wild in '73-'74 Its too bad Joey and Johnny hated each other so much.
Wansn't for sale, was only for rent. Never made the kind of money it would have taken to buy anyway, was never about the money, was about the love of the music.
With the fame of this legendary club and all the merchandising over the years, you would think that Hilly was smart enough to have bought the property a long time ago.
I spent a lot of time at CBs through High School. I still miss the matinees...and seeing Reagan Youth, False Prophets, GBH, the Beasties, DKs and many many more. Thanks for the memories!
He's dying, man. Also, his not paying rent let some bullshit "charity" buy the place. Still; maybe it was time. It was overrun will middle-aged tourists last time I went. Damn, there will never be another place like that.

It is odd that the place was originally intended for country, bluegrass and blues, and then it winds up being the birthplace of punk.
