As someone who has performed this song(and yes in front of a large audience) this is just something you DON'T mess up! If you are at all nervous and think there is the SMALLEST chance you might brain fart then you write it on a card. You just don't screw this song up at a public event. It is about respect for the song and what it represents. This is embarrassing as both an American and as a performer!

Man, what makes people upset are the alarming number of pop-singers who mess up the US national anthem. If they don't make mistakes with the lyrics, then they change it into a three minute pop-song. There are many videos on youtube featuring pop-stars doing this, look what just happened at the Super Bowl. I'm not saying that pop-singers shouldn't make mistakes, I'm simply saying that they either need to rehearse more, or pass on singing the anthem all together.

I've heard Mike sing this beautifully before. He's a lovely human being who takes pride in his work, but things happen.

I'm proud of him, but ashamed of the announcers who make fun of him on the audio.

And, as a person who has performed the National Anthem before, let me offer the suggestion that he might have had a 2-minute time constraint, that necessitated the omission of one verse on the do-over.

Maybe a little compassion and understanding, rather than derision, is in order.

But for any "professional singer" to completely gaff the song on the second try, the National Anthem of his country? There is no other word to describe it... He, and the band, should be well advised to publish a full page ad apologizing to the fans of both teams, and to the country at large...
