the reviews at the beginning make it sound like a will ferrell movie or something. It's kind of strange how this movie makes you laugh but is so dark and depressing, and the ending is still haunting me
The message behind the movie is "receive with simplicity everything that happens to you". Stop controlling everything and just let go. Stop trying to find the truth. The truth is love. "When the truth is found, to be lies. And all the hope within you dies.....You better find somebody to love"
This is a fantastic movie, and is made even better if you understand Jewish culture and references. And the rabbis in the movie... boy did I relate to experiences like that.

Coen films are crap.. They probably make crap movies on purpose because you get the regular bunch of retards who think they understand it. I bet they piss themselves laughing when they get good reviews.
i totally am lost which part of this movie made you laughed and cried. i would love to hear your explanation, seriously, please. i just watched this movie and could not understand what cohens tried to tell through the movie at all @sassmyfrass
Personally, the scene by the empty pool at the Jolly Roger made me cry. And the part where Larry's wife is explaining along with Sy that they think it would be best if Larry moved out made me laugh.
This is a movie about not knowing the answer about things like whether the cat is dead or alive. Not knowing whether God is going to intervene in your life or not. Not knowing why bad thing after bad thing is happening to you.
The answer that the Coens give is: Don't you want somebody to love?
Very interesting. really. but as we Japanese are mostly Atheist, i dunno if we can share the same sense of this movie with other religious countries such as North American parts. but your guide helped me very much to taste the hint of this movie. personally i laughed when the Korean guys dad showed up and threatened Larry. but i still put way better evaluations on Big Lebowski than this. @siskelebertroeper
Well, I found most of Professor Gopnik's dialogue just hilarious, as the poor suck was trying to deal with some increasingly awful things going on in his life. Then as the movie ended, during the last minute and seconds, it escalates to make everything else that has happened utterly insignificant. I found the closing moments breathtakingly sad.
How the hell is this movie "hilarious" and "comedic"?? I thought it was serious and thought provoking!!!

@blackyblackblack505 Two words: goy's teeth. Proof that a movie can be funny and serious at the same time.

How is this considered comedy? It is like watching a puppy get beaten to death for two hours!

I wouldn't say that it's one of the funniest films I've seen, but it left me thinking about it for hours after. One of the best of the year.
