i think it wasnt actually headless, i think that most of the brain and cranium is gone leaving only the reptilian brain so in theory, its functioning at the level of a fruitfly. fruitflies barely even have a brain, more like a nub of neurons behind each eye and 2 nubs for navigation and muscle control. yet they too eat, drink, breathe, poop, mate, kill, run,or hide.the rest of the brain could be said to be needed only for higher functions,including consciousness,but not maintenance and motility.

If something were to attack during those four years, he would not have known it was coming and therefore never experienced the fright that comes with an impending death which is the worst form of torture.
