fantastic. beautiful. But, it's sad to see him now. Maybe he's bored, but he....tries too hard. It's like watching someone else trying to sing his songs.
Marvellous, amazing, fantastic, wonderful song!!! I've got a daughter who just have ben operated last night, thanks God succesfully. Though I always loved this song, now hearing it again, makes my eyes real wet.
I searched this song because in the video for "bullets in the gun" by toby keith you can see this is one of the choices on the jukebox at one point in the video
I was very happy to hear this, thank you for posting it. I was thinking 'Stones' is not on 'Hot August Night'. I didn't know that it was one of the bonus track on the 2000 reissue. Thanks!
This is a beautiful video, so sweet. Thank you boogie2w for sharing this with us. You did a remarkably good job with the photos and the words. I loved the photo of Neil with his family near the end, "and being lost is worth the coming home." I've always imagined this to be about his returning home after a tour. Such a sweet song.
"She would ache for love and get but stones". It' s just about a girl who gets no love but has a man keen to give it to her and she may not know about him "a good day's coming and I'll be there to let the sun in". "Stones would make her bed" just means that she sleeps unhappily every night. Nothing grows in stones and he's about to change it. Such a great song.
As I understand it, Stones are things that hurt, and the woman hurt every night for love and this would play on her mind and also prevail at night as she had no love and ached to feel loved and be loved. the second verse tells of her finding love, a truly brilliant song and this version stands out.
I am a 45 year old white male "tough guy" I love various music from hard rock to today's rap to Elvis but let me tell you Neil Diamond is probably the greatest songwriter, singer, performer I have ever heard. I can listen to him all day. Hopefully he will have his own channel on Sirius/XM just like Bruce and Elvis has. He so deserves it.
He was always on tour - never with her when she needed him the most. She won 150 million dollars - all he asked for was his songs and their rights. It is sad.
Just wanted to say that you have a lot of real good vid's of Neil's and this is one of my fav's - did a great job with the black and white slide show. Alyce V
"Stones" is a metaphore for a delicate subject especialy in the seventies.
Okay so it's probably T.M.I. but here goes.
The song is about a young lady who gets alot of "male" ="stones" attention. Inside her head and in her bed. But still she aches for LOVE. She is being USED but not being LOVED. He is coming to love her and make a family with her.
He was at his best during this time. I admit I sometimes get lost in his looks and sound and don't focus much on lyrics that aren't straightforward... so what the heck does he mean about 'stones inside her head and making her bed'???
@SierraJude I thought Stone's were used to represent pain that he felt during his breakup with his first wife, that is why it is rarely sung in concert.
the matter is Neil is a composer of hits, it's not the case with Elvis, though I'm his fan, always been. But you got to give the devil his due, Neil is a great songwriter, he wrote Sweet Caroline
That confused me when you said it was from 'Hot August Night'. It is but not the original 'Hot August Night'. It is on the Remastered/Expanded from 2000 or 2002. 'Stones' was released in 1971 but on the album called 'Stones'. This is a great live version, love it!
si ascolta e apprezza INTERAMENTE solo se si è presenti direttamente alla esecuzione. Neil ascoltato sui dischi ha dato prove PIù CONVINCENTI ed entusiasmanti di questo brano.
Favourite Diamond song, plus this is the best version i've heard. My mum is a massive fan, and i grew up listening to this music from a child. Finally got tickets in the UK a few years ago and took my mum to see him in Sheffield. Absolutely brilliant! I like ACDC, Led Zep, Oasis, Sex Pistols, but i put the Diamond up there as the best.........work that one out LOL!
You always hear about "Top Ten Albums" compilations and people's favourite 10 albums etc..Well, in my opinion, any serious list should include Hot August Night. It inspired so many remakes and so many artists that it's inumerable. If not a top ten album of all time, then at least one of the Top 5 most influential.
And that is coming from someone who isn't a 'big' Neil Diamond fan, but my respect for his musical skill and artistry is deep without question.
Oh, this is wonderful! I get to hear his wonderfully timeless handsome voice, see pictures of his wonderfully handsome face and (while trying to be quiet in the library) squeal my head off! By the way, is the pic at 3:08/3:09 really Neil? And who is he sitting with at 3:15?!?*flames of jealousy* I'M A BELIEVERRR!!
Speaking of "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", does anyone have that song that they can please upload? I haven't heard that song in so many years. I worship Neil Diamond, and I used to have the album with that track on it, but alas.... with moving over the many years I no longer have it. Can someone please find that song and upload on YouTube? Thank you so much!
I like many songs from Neil Diamond. But ones I heard a song from him about a table that they erned from there father. It is a wonderfull text. But I don't know the title from that song. Is there anyone in this world who knowes wich song I mean?
When I was four I was singing "Shilo" at the top of my lungs every weekend at my grandparents house. I begged for the Hot August Night album and then wore it out listening to him talk about "trees in the sky". By the time I was old enough to not entirely despise boys, I was in love. Then life happened and, a few years later, I might not have recognized his name.

Such intensity and sensativity make all of Neils early stuff so impossable to ignore...The pain in his voice, yet underlying strength that makes his music what it is...A message to pick yourself up and move on for better days that lie ahead...
This is a good song, but what I want to know is where did she get the person who comes in and makes the beds? ... I have to do it myself every morning.
Neil is for sure the Jewish Elvis. What a blessing he has been in our lifetime.
