The Tomato has reopened in Sanger, Tx. Just north of Denton. Same food. Same people. Same attitude. Go see them at 303 Bolivar St Sanger Tx. There's a facebook page too!!
That's sad. I went to UNT and remember the Tomato very well. (For a time, I lived on Ponder Street like two blocks from there.) I heard that it burned down, but wasn't there in Denton at that time (I graduated in 2001). From what I hear, Fry Street isn't the same anymore from when I was there. That sucks, too.
I'm trying to figure out how the view is from the Delta parking lot though, unless the "new" house had a driveway on Fry Street. This is the driveway from the White House or the Zebra building, isn't it?
I love how all they have done is rip down the building and leave an empty lot with a big friggin mud puddle. CVS, walgreens and starbucks stay the f*** out!!!!!!!!!!!
Fuck You! Denton was the most kickass little city in Texas. One of the last Texas Cities that had true character instead of the shishi corporate bullshit fake culture.
This Sucks I just wrote my name on the walls two days prior were many of the true dentonies left there mark to be apart of history, never will forget. -DJ SWAGGA
I noticed the building gone last time I was in Denton, but didn't know it had burned. i was actually driving by to say hi to Ski (and Becky if she was there) I worked at the Flying Tomato in 87-88 or so before working for Mr. Jim's Pizza. Every time I find myself in Denton, I would go by the Tomato and get a slice of the gutbuster for old tymes sake.
As a Fry Street bum from 85 to 90, I remember those years very fondly. You guys have no idea what it was like back in the day.
Can't believe it took me so long to watch the videos. either way it would have gone it was still sad to know it won't be there anymore. This was the first place i ate pizza when i entered as a freshman in fall 2002 and that last place i ate pizza as a senior summer 2006. i wish i could hear one more song from that sweet jukebox.
awesome video! did you see our video on the right hand side in the related video section? its titled Denton, TX Arts and Jazz fest Freeze Mob, |UA| United Aid
this is crazy! I found out about this right after it happened, but I only had the courage to look at the video until now. I worked there for a good 9 nines months (2002-2003). It was one of the last places I had dinner with my dad before he died :(
I understand why it was burned down, but it could have had a much better ending. . .
Becky and Ski are some of the most innocent and nice people out there, they did not deserve this crap!!
My old roommate's brother painted the mural that was on the wall in the Tomato. I remember watching a building burn just a block away from there back in about '92 or so. I so loved the Tomato, especially on the weekend.
No it wasn't the owners, it wasn't anarcists, it was a dumbass highschool friend of mine. He was a failed musician, and was hoping to gain some sort of attention through this. We grew up here in Denton and he'd been like that since we were in high school. And don't worry, the dumbass was caught, released on bail, and caught again when he tried to run. Ya. an idiot... He's in jail now for at least a couple years. I miss Tomato too... Best pizza in town.
Yep.....used to work there.Ski was my boss. The pizza was alright, BUT there H/C sandwitch was out of this world. this was in '94 mind you. Great jukebox.Shiner on tap.met one of my girlfriends there.
The first time I went there was with my bestfriend Adam when he was at UNT.. The years later my husband and daughters lived there and I am totally SHOCKED!!! It was a Denton landmark and a pretty cool place to get cheap beer and okay pizza...
The Tomato is now on the square. Two blocks -> That way. However...CVS will need to clean a whole lot of burnt shit out of their way for that corner spot
For anyone who grew up in Denton-Flying Tomato was a right of passage. We all couldn't wait until we hit the 9th-10th grade when our parents said we could go there and for me that was 1984-85. Wow, just look at how long FT has been around. My niece is at that point now, just getting the chance to hang out there with her friends. Too bad they were going to tear it down, even worse it got torched.
At 10:08 I was walking to my car right by the the tomoato. I saw a guy in a wheelchair stuck. His wheel was caught on a wire on the fence.I helped him. But no one else was on the Fry St side. He could have seen the whole thing for thew last time.
i think its kind of a cool twist to the legend of the tomato. It would have been a different story if someone were hurt. I have to admit it is kinda sad. but at least it shined one last time before white collar got to it. many a times spent there and lots of quarters pumped into that fooz bball table
as far as i have heard, cool beans is fine... it was most likely some stupid disgruntled fry rat. none of us were happy about losing this part of fry street but burning it down isn't saving anything... just think if this had happened last summer when it was so dry and windy- everything would have been gone, including a lot of our homes and probably part of our school. i really hope these jack asses get caught.
Thank god they had just torn down the annex to Cool Beans the day before or it would be gone too! We sell Late Night Tacos there after midnight and what a shame it would be to deprive Denton of the tacos they love! Long live Fry Street!
Someone put the Fry in Fry Street. Sadly, they risked the lives of others, as well as themselves. If you don't want CVS, Starbucks and Chilis moving in (and I don't) organize petitions and send it to their corporate offices to let them know.
This is an example of the sinful nature of people not guided by God's love. Firemen could have been hurt, other businesses destroyed. I have played on Fry Street numerous times with the Earl Harvin Trio. This is so sad. Goodbye.
i grew up in denton and know it inside and out, and actually, you're wrong about God.... see.......... it's the only place in denton where you can escape from the super conservatism and fundamentalist baptist crap........
seriously, fry street was the only haven for any type of creativity, music, freedom, fun in denton which is overall an extremely oppressive kind of place.......... so fry street is a rebellious little section near the university where the culture was very similar to 6th street in austin.....
Uh, actually, this is an example of people guided by anger for what was previously their culture before it was taken away by greedy, uninspired, money-hungry developers.
That doesn't make it right. I loved the Flying Tomato, probably ate there a hundred times when I was at UNT. It kills me to think of that corner going corporate. But no matter how much poetic justice the fire might be, it was still incredibly stupid and dangerous.
Considering the TAMSters are not even in school right now, and are banned from Fry Street past 9PM, and idolize The Tomato, you are very very much wrong.
