There have been two different cartoon series with characters named Tom and Jerry. This human duo came first and was created by the Van Beuren studio in the early 1930s. The cat and mouse version were made at MGM beginning in 1940.

@laughland Joseph Barbera (co-creator of 1940 Tom and Jerry) worked on this series as well. He used the names Tom and Jerry for his cat and mouse creation because he didn't want to let those good names go to waste. In the 1950's these cartoons were re-issued as Dick and Larry cartoons to avoid confusion with the cat and mouse duo,

@KrazyKartoonKid You are correct about these being rereleased as Dick and Larry, but the part about Joe Barbera working on these is an often repeated fact which sounds like it ought to be true but is simply not possible. Allow me to clear this up. The final Tom and Jerry at Van Beuren hit the theaters in July 1933 at which time Barbera was not yet doing animation and was in fact working as an accountant at Irvng Trust. He would not arrive at VB until well into 1934.

khangwashere, I'm proud you came out and told people you were gay, it took alot of guts. This movie however I'm afraid is not gay. I maybe only 18 and never live in the 30s, but I love old B&W cartoons, they many of then are more funnier then the onces we have now. I only wish Cartoon Network was like is again, I miss the old old movie classics, Popeye, Tom & Jerry (old)and many others.
