  • @guitarnaor

already open the description of video ?

  • my computer wont show the lyrics

  • love this song!

  • Some lyric errors, if I'm remembering right:

"This bulkhead's built of fallen brethren bones"

"And it's 7 8 9, you get your shovel back in line"

  • I don't understand what the numbers represent, but I feel the song is ultimately about the hypocrisy of the human condition. Any suggestions?

  • @CognitiveAbolition haha according to comments below i was way off, but thats my representation and im sticking to it

  • Fucking love this song.

  • Is this band Irish? just curious.

  • @kreugfire926 no theyre are just an american folk band

  • Okay, funny moment. I'm writing a story on my computer, and I was at a really tense moment. I clicked this song, and then got so into the part I was writing that when it started playing, it scared me. LOL

  • I can't decide whether this or Down By The Water is my favorite track off this album.

  • @MysticalChicken i know right? those two or don't carry it all

  • Reminds me of St. Patty's day! :)

  • Morons, Colin Meloy has talked about what this song is about, it about the Butte Copper Mines in Montana, He grew up in Helena, only 40 minutes away. There are ten different levels of the copper tunnels. there you go

  • @AllTheWayToEleven It is about the coal mines. If you lived 10 years in the mines you were in the minoritiy. And the "You won't make a dime" ... a lot of coal towns had stores that were owned by the same people that employed the miners and other stores were too far away for easy access.. if you even had time/energy. You really never could get out of debt because you gave your money right back to the person who gave it to you in order to survive.

  • @ashattackist It is specifically about the granite mountain/speculator mining accident, the worst hard rock mining accident in US history. many miners died of asphyxia the counting refers to the fact that if you inhale wood smoke for about ten seconds you will die.

  • i found this randomly, just what does the song mean?

  • @niebells Have a good time making it to ten... because you only get to count once.

  • awesome song...

  • No, I'm here because this song is awesome.

  • yea, as a couple other people have pointed out i think, couple of fixes for the lyrics - "you get your shuffle back in line" not "gave" and "what were you meant for, whatever you're meant for" not just "what were you meant for twice

  • "Carving the Mountains" would make a nice short film for Cannes Film Festival.

  • Watched the video. Professionally done. Nice job.

  • "Of dirt you're made, and to dirt you will return" Just saw them live in Raleigh and got a sweet shirt with that quote on the back :D

  • @buldren0101 They actually sell shirts that say that on the back? Geez that's from the Bible, it's not like they made it up...

  • @MahoganyCow ...and? I thought cows couldn't talk?

  • I want to go to Madrid now and a great song just bought the album !!

  • "You gave your shuffle back in line"

    you're sure that's correct ?

    I thought it was :

"You get your shovel back in line"

  • @Nightwelier "You get your shuffle back in line"

    You were both close.

  • Comment removed

  • @Nightwelier sorry, ignore that last comment lol that was me being stupid. Anyway, its "get your shuffle back in line"

  • @Nightwelier you are correct, it is "shovel"

  • @TiagosVideos Damn right!

  • @TiagosVideos I watched that video, but I'm here because of this song

  • @TiagosVideos Myep. Same here

  • @TiagosVideos Vice Versa for me. ;c

  • The melody of this song sounds very similar to the melody of the traditional Irish song "The RAGGLE TAGGLE gypsy" Check out the similarities by going to the song and forward to 2:00 min.

  • @nutcasefella it's not similar, it's the same. and it works really really well :D

  • 2:00 ... Slide time :3

  • 2:00 become epic...

  • zonder longboard meisjes is ie toch minder

  • @skrzata same here, 'bout the song :D

  • Great song: tells the story of the Granite Mtn Mining Disaster in Butte America: the largest hardrock mining disaster in history.

  • This song reminds me of the show Firefly :D

  • onder t fillumpie van die longboard girls

  • DUMPERT VERENIG!

  • staat dit ook op dumpert?

  • Tsja dit ook weer: DUMPERT!

  • @Yeltuh888 its very impolite to talk w/ your mouth full

  • @LongboardingAZAsian

    me too :)

  • The Russian says hell yeah love it.

  • love the song but your lyrics are way off

  • its so chilling,so fucking great song!

  • It's intersting how different people interpret different things. For me personally this song brings to mind stories of immigrants trying to find their place in America during the 1800's or so. None the less, love this song. I just heard it today and as soon as I got home I ran to the computer to look it up.

  • I think there's a direct quote of "Wraggle-Taggle Gypsies" starting at 2:00. Cool incorporation of a traditional song. These guys rock.

  • riff muy similar a "el pibe de los astilleros" de patricio rey y sus redonditos de recota

    como exportamos los argentinos!!

  • I love this song! Love the whole album - perfect for on the road.

  • Love this song so much. The new album is just amazing.

  • wow! amazing song. probably my favorite by the decemberists. i feel like this is a commentary upon the fact that the way society is set up it's hard to stray from its norms
