Okay, funny moment. I'm writing a story on my computer, and I was at a really tense moment. I clicked this song, and then got so into the part I was writing that when it started playing, it scared me. LOL
Morons, Colin Meloy has talked about what this song is about, it about the Butte Copper Mines in Montana, He grew up in Helena, only 40 minutes away. There are ten different levels of the copper tunnels. there you go
@AllTheWayToEleven It is about the coal mines. If you lived 10 years in the mines you were in the minoritiy. And the "You won't make a dime" ... a lot of coal towns had stores that were owned by the same people that employed the miners and other stores were too far away for easy access.. if you even had time/energy. You really never could get out of debt because you gave your money right back to the person who gave it to you in order to survive.
@ashattackist It is specifically about the granite mountain/speculator mining accident, the worst hard rock mining accident in US history. many miners died of asphyxia the counting refers to the fact that if you inhale wood smoke for about ten seconds you will die.
yea, as a couple other people have pointed out i think, couple of fixes for the lyrics - "you get your shuffle back in line" not "gave" and "what were you meant for, whatever you're meant for" not just "what were you meant for twice
wow...des lied hat mich von anfang an fasziniert..macht mir gute laune und is verdammt schön gemacht des lied...toll gesungen, tolle melodie, tolle stimme
The melody of this song sounds very similar to the melody of the traditional Irish song "The RAGGLE TAGGLE gypsy" Check out the similarities by going to the song and forward to 2:00 min.
It's intersting how different people interpret different things. For me personally this song brings to mind stories of immigrants trying to find their place in America during the 1800's or so. None the less, love this song. I just heard it today and as soon as I got home I ran to the computer to look it up.
wow! amazing song. probably my favorite by the decemberists. i feel like this is a commentary upon the fact that the way society is set up it's hard to stray from its norms

Some lyric errors, if I'm remembering right:
"This bulkhead's built of fallen brethren bones"
"And it's 7 8 9, you get your shovel back in line"

I don't understand what the numbers represent, but I feel the song is ultimately about the hypocrisy of the human condition. Any suggestions?
