This interview took place before Slash found out that the 'Appetite for Destruction' amplifer was actually a 1959 Marshall Superlead that was Modified. It was S.I.R.'s #36. He stated in more recent interviews that he was wrong, he thought it was a JCM800. #36 was a mystery amp, because it had been modified a few times, nobody knew what was really in it, and since it is now M.I.A. somewhere. They had to start from scratch. The AFD100 is both "AFD" tone and S.I.R. #34 (Modded JCM 800)combined.
@bytebull new amps are great too.. if you stop being a marshall tube snob, you can go to a shop and try bogners, dr. z's, badcats, cornford.. but i can agree, it's hard to replace a good jcm 800 or a silver jubilee.
There are a few people who have researched the AFD amp to the deepest extents. Although there was a JCM800 used for some of the cleaner parts on AFD, the main head, SIR's "#36" was a "hand wired" 1959 superlead with "metal panels" which puts the head between mid '69 & mid '73. Frank & Glenn (the guys who did the "Caswell mod") say "early 70s."
Youtube wont let me post a link so google- Sweet Marshall O' Mine #36 -& read "part 2" of this thorough research for the answers you're looking for :)
Marshall released a 1959 100 watt Superlead with the JCM 800 series. In other words, its a non master volume superlead just like the old ones but with JCM 800 stamped on the front.
The appetite amp was not a JCM800, it was a modded 1959 100w superlead from the early 70s. It was modded with a 4th preamp tobe to increase the gain. it was the #36 amp modded by frank levi for S.I.R company.. (Originally slash rehearsed with the infamous #39 that was a 1959T superlead, it had a 4th preamp tube for the tremolo circuit, but george lynch used it when slash recorded appetite, so frank levi modded another 1959 (without the tremolo circuit) , that happened to be #36.)
There was a JCM800 1959, but that was essentially a 1959 inside a JCM800 chassis.. The JCM800 models were designated this:
50w: 2204 & 2205
100w: 2203 & 2210.
Silver Jubes came out in 87 so Slash couldn't have used them for the recording of appetite, since they recorded it in 86... So basically a JCM800 and a 1959 Superlead are NOT the same. No fucking way. The 1959 did not have a master volume, the JCM800 or the JMP2203/2204 as they were know DID have a master volume. Big difference.
Since 1981 the 1959 Super Lead was distributed with a plate with the inscription "JCM800 Series" so it's not wrong to say he recorded AFD with a JCM800. It's just fussy to argue that #36 maybe was manufactured before 1981.
Correct. 800's were just a series of Marshall amps after they changed Distributors because JMP's were still being distributed so Jim Marshall had to change the name and look of the amplifier. So you can find JCM800's as 2203, 2204, NMV 1959 circuit. Look around for a JCM800 Super Lead or Super Bass, you'll find them around. So it's possible #36 was a JCM800 1959 Super Lead. Just ask Frank Levi, he modded the damn thing...
Slash doesn't take interviews seriously, 1:54 is proof. lol!

Right ! I have both, JCM 800 and Superlead 59, they are not the same. JCM800 was instroduced in 81, much later after the Superlead 59 was released.
