straight and to the point, no whammy, clean playing just like on the blow by blow album.....one of if not the best live versions of this song in my opinion.....clapton thinks so to from what i see !
There are a lot of truly great guitarplayers, but I've always found that Jeff was from another dimension, maybe like Hendrix was. In his hands a guitar is a totally different instrument than in other's. So unorthodox. His soul, through his fingers, comes out of the guitar. I think he's underrated. But again, there are a lot of great players.

In his hands a guitar is a totally different instrument than in other's. So unorthodox. His soul, through his fingers, comes out of the guitar. I think he's underrated. But again, there are a lot of great players.
1) A lot of the older guitarists haven't kept progressing, it's true, but hey, they're the first wave of rock guitarists that've actually made it to this ripe age & are still playing. I have to disagree with you on Beck - he's maybe the only guitarist who's kept pushing himself & trying different techniques & genres. He's well respected & a "musician's musician". Check out his 2009 video "Live at Ronnie Scott's", & listen to the song called "Blanket" he does with Imogen Heap.
2) And other guitarists have appeared that are original, like Sonny Landreth who plays slide like nobody else, fretting behind the slide & using harmonics (check out the song Congo Square). Eric Johnson, with his one of a kind violin-tone & attack; Daniel Lanois (his solo on Lotta Love), etc. Clapton sounds recycled now, but remember he basically invented rock lead guitar in the 60’s with his “woman” tone & fiery playing. If it wasn’t for people like him, rock guitar wouldn’t be the same.
3) And it’s not just about a guitarist’s technique. It’s about the genuine feeling & soul they put into their playing, like the way Johnny Lang & the late Steve Marriot sing. That’s why it doesn’t matter that there’s a million kids nowadays that have the technique down at age 14. Sure they’re “wunderkinds”, but the novelty wears off when they get older & they’re still copying other people’s licks, instead of INVENTING their own & breaking new ground.
4) Most of these kids don't even play with passion either, they're just robots who think speed equals "good playing". You hear people say "Clapton / Hendrix / Van Halen aren't so good -- I can play their stuff easy". What they're forgetting is that you not only have to play it, you have to invent that style & compose the songs/licks in the first place, AND feel it. Violin, cello & piano have been around for a long time, & no one's tired of them yet. I doubt guitar will disappear either.
I saw '82 MSG show - seen Beck many times. Clapton live is indeed un-impressive esp sharing a stage w/Beck. Tired of excuses by Clapton fans " it's about feel" "..it's really two different styles". Beck's playing+ 40 yr discovery of GTR via every style imaginable including, yes, the blues speaks for itself. Becks mind blowing no pick technique (see "where were you?").
grinch is right. Clapton is unoriginal, lethargic but 14YO don't mimic Beck.
Nothing new in Rock. Nothing has changed since this video was recorded. You know, it almost looks ridiculous now...these dinosaurs all holding guitars...like penises. Boring pentatonics and predictable scales. Eric Clapton's once innovative style has given way to lethargy...not because of age but because he just doesn't care anymore. Guitar schools are bulging with 14 year olds who can play JUST AS GOOD AS HE DID WHEN HE WAS WITH CREAM. I suspect the guitar is on it's way OUT!
Thank you. Just beautiful. Thanks for posting. For those who care or don't know, this is a song he dedicated to the late great Roy Buchanan. Complete with the Telecaster touch. Very nice. This live performance differs somewhat from the album cut on Secret Policeman's other, where the song is extended for another 45 seconds and includes a very focused and more agressive solo. Perhaps taped on a different night...
Take a listen to Roy Buchanan play....his soul and tears come out like I've never heard before....Including these two all time greats. Roy (half wolf) Buchanan will blow your freaking mind....
Beck simply learned to use space and a "less is more" approach ala Miles Davis. Both are/were (Miles is dead) masters of expression. You hear them on their instrument and they are instantly recognizable, even after 1 note.
Clapton is good, sure; But, there's a reason why it's Jeff Beck Playing Lead: With Jeff Beck you don't need a singer or Words, his artistry carries the show for the entire duration of the concert, and as good as Clapton may be, he can't say that about his playing.

I agree Beck is a virtuouso - but if you think Clapton isn't, and is "just another player" then you DID miss the solos I and many others witnessed.
@RoughBoy1056 I agree with lastdaysguitar when he defends Claptons ability as a musician. It's OK if you think Clapton is over-RATTED as you put it (and misspel it) after all we're not discussing a quantity that can be measured and then agreed on by everyone BUT, there is a powerful consensus of music lovers, musicians in general, guitar players in particular and even people 50 and over that Clapton is one of only a small handfull (Beck included) of the best Rock/Pop ax-men around.
music/guitarists etc are extremely competitive but even more so respectful towards each other at the Beck/Clapton level. zinnington-thanks for your kind words.really like bill frissel.and leo kottke.if you play with feeling and depth doesn't matter what genre.beck just happens to be my favorite.there's a rare cover of hendrix's "driftin" by will lee with jeff that could be my favorite solo of his.it starts at about 2:10 into the song.
mo foster on bass.simon phillips on drums.beck always has great drummers.check out the live version of loose cannon here on youtube with andy gangerdeen on drums.
Beck playing like the absolute master he is... no need to dis Clapton, folks.. he is what he is... and he is wonderful... he thinks he can't play like he used to... I would disagree... he has MUCH more soul in his playing in the last decade... these 2 go back a LONG way ... be very interesting to have a drink with them and listen to stories... any producers out there? it would be a great show... both unique for many reasons.. (though no doubt Beck is the more innovative player... MY favorite)
A lot of folks thing Eric is overrated because he is not the most sophistaced musican. In fact Almost any graduate of the Musicans Institute or Berkely can play rings around him. So what he has integrity and consistancy. The dickheads that critize have no idea what it takes to be a ptofessional and be capable of showing up on time whereever your booked and deliver what is expected over and over year after years.
Although I love EC, its true that he's gone a long way on very little in terms of technique, innovation or style. JB on the other hand has taken guitar playing to new and unbelievable levels of brilliance but with no where near the same level of recognition as EC. Just goes to show that the masses have no real appreciation of what guitar should be.
This is fun to watch because Clapton is so god damned over rated as a player and Jeff Beck is so fricken under rated. Clapton is fullfilling his perfect role here, back up to the greatness of Jeff Beck.
They're both great players with totally different styles. They're be a lot less argument about Beck's status if he hadn't had such personality issues through his career that scuppered many a group he was involved with. Instead he's become something of an icon for guitar aficionados. Clapton himself, some years ago, chose Beck above everyone else as the most multi-talented guitarist he'd ever seen. That's from a guy who has hung out with some of the best, including Page, Vaughan, and Hendrix.
I had this on a CASSETE tape (Anyone remember them?). Played it until the tape broke from sheer exhaustion, I guess. Thanks much for posting this classic.
@DGA0602 teles are awsome really ,i think they look really streamlined and to think that they were the first mass produced solid body guitar and nearly 60 years on they still kick ass and stay in tune and sound awsome, not much has changed with them ,,dear mr leo fender got it right the first time ,,,,how cool is that
The best version ever, on the Seymour Duncan Tele, no vibrato, no whammy bar. Watch Clapton's face at 2:25, that says it all. The Picasso of the Electric guitar. JB!Peace Bros
@exposurejd Thanks buddy, Jeff has been at the top of my list since 1976 when this came out. This was the time was before the days of shred and finger tapping. Jeff's a true pioneer of electric guitar and what it's become. Eric Johnson is another, Danny Gatton, Stevie of course. Next we step into another realm, Stanley Jordan, Jimmy Rosenburg, Kevin Eubanks. Got to love all of them! Did I mention Jimmy Rosenburg? Come back Jimmy! youtube.com/watch?v=tvd7m996kcs&feature=related
They are both amazing and incomparable but I must say I have a thing for Jeff he is pure gold. So is clapton. People should stop arguing about it and enjoy the amazing music they presented us as they could.
This song changed my life back in '75.. As it turns out I'm not sure if it was for the better, all I knew is that I wanted to play the guitar like Jeff. Like a human voice. Make them laugh, make them cry, talk to them with nonsense and make it all make sense in the end.
The real date is september 1981. I heard the album TSPOB. In this video, i just don't like the edition of parts of the song, witch is a beautiful one.
Jeff Beck has been a master guitarist and showed his chops from the Yardbirds, to his Jeff Beck Groups with Camine Appice and Tim Bogert, Rod Stewart on vocals and John Tesh not the Tesh your thinking about, Beck Bogert and Appice his work with Jan Hammer on Blow by Blow, and so many other outfits he has played with he has shown impeccable technique, on the spot phrasing and tasty leads. Having played for over 40 years I can tell you Jeff Beck has more chops than Clapton who is predictable.
As far as I'm concerned, Clapton is right where he belongs on stage...in the background. I've always prefered Beck and I don't condone drugs, but Clapton hasn't done anything worthwhile since he kicked heroin. Slowed down Layla, Cocaine, You look Wonderful tonight... give me a break!
I always thought Jeff should have toured with Rolling Stones to expand their sound with more lead guitar solos. Mick Jagger runs all around stage singing constantly and often could use a breather. Keith Richards is great and an original Stone, but very few can play the hell out of the rock and blues style guitar like Jeff Beck.
Even Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, etc. have to give Jeff his proper respect on stage.
The Tele in this video (assuming it's the storied one EC and JB traded) was just a hybrid Seymour Duncan slapped together for Jeff (or Eric?) in the 70s. It's not a Thinline or any other kind of production model... sadly:(
You'll find that track on Blow by Blow - an amazing album and one of many by Jeff Beck who is without doubt one of the most amazing and influencial guitarists off all time - he inspired many of todays ROCK giants and his technique has been emulated over and over again but non can still come close to the emotion and integrity of his playing!
Why the fuck do IDIOTS keep comparing guitarists? As far as I am concerned they are just as good, except Jimi Hendrix, which is just in a class of his own. You cannot compare Beck and Eric Clapton. Get it.
sse by saying that you too, are doing the exact same thing as every1 else, and im gonna add my considerably knowledgeable opinion to this, hendrix is no way the best guitsrest ever, clapton is the greatest GUITAR player ever knowone can touch him, hendrix might be the most influencial or the most flamboyant guitar player ever, but there is just NOWAY anyone can touch clapton on guitar for shear ability. C.I.G
That's right it is not all a "Battle of the Bands Show". These guys just like to play together and make the magic. EC allows JB to shine and does exactly what the second guitar should do. Lovely.
@nyg1954 Thank you. You are my hero. It's the music that counts. Alot of people commenting here should check out jazz guitarists. Talk about separating the men from theboys.
Pfft! Eric Clapton, the dinosaur. Mr. Fluffy Pop Rock! The guy's been cruising on his reputation from the 60s. Can we please raise the bar a little higher for our heroes?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
brymac - I like Jeff. I DO NOT like Eric Clapton. You really have to do a lot better than performing boring pentatonics to impress me. Eric hasn't put in a days work since 1969. I'm tired of this guy faking his art.
Am so sorry to hear that you are deaf and blind...I think you will find he has done a lot since `69...anyway..enjoy the dog and the hearing aid...oops sorry for got ..you will not be able to read this

There's no gtr player who can play like JB or do justice to his stuff.Tune is probably written by Steve Wonder & Jeff dedicated this beauty to Roy Buchanan.
jeff beck with sleeves?!? what strange place is this video from? incredible performance by the way, thanks for posting, Beck uses "pastels of musical colors" to quote renduke. There will never be anyone like him again.
@najibora : LOL.. of course he's playing guitar.. but i mean.. he's just doing rhythm.. i thought they both gonna jam with Jeff's song. Just like Steve Lukather & Lee Ritenour, covering this song also.
Unique in that a) Jeff is wearing a shirt with a collar and sleeves b) he's playing a tele c) he's using a pick. Not sure what year it is, but Eric looks like he's got a buzz on, so it's gotta be more than ten years old.
Terry Bozzio probably explains it best about Beck....he plays in what Bozzio refers to as "time warped fractals"....in other words it's almost like a 16 note octive.....there are notes there that are neither A or G but closer to one of the two notes......in otherwords he's playing in a sort of pastels of musical colors and Bozzio claims he's never heard anyone else do it with such effect. Bozzio also claims that while he does it with both hands it comes primarily from his right hand.
there"s no doubt that Roy Buchanan influenced Beck a great deal, Jeff even admits to borrowing from him to improve his sound, as this dedication (cause we"ve ended as lovers) proves how much he thought of Roy!
WELL, FIRST TIME ON YOUTUBE A REASONABLE INPUT...YOU KNOW....? YOU ARE ALL RIGHT...! Dont worry about the telecaster..i have a strat JB customized...cant get near that sound...play the guitar for 40 years haha
dustyturntable hits the nail on the head. It's not about who's better. Different styles, different sounds, different techniques. Let's just thank the Lord we got a chance to hear them in our lifetime. Noone is " THE BEST " . Or maybe they ALL are.
God walk into the venue everytime Beck picks up a guitar.....he does the same thing 90% of the time with Steve Vai.....Beck is beyond words here....Clapton just looks paralized by what he;s hearing here....look at clapton at 2:24 he just can't believe it....frankly neither can I
Holy shit I think you're right! And I've never seen Jeff use a pick before. Amazing the tones he gets from the Tele. Humbuckers no less. Seen him play 3 times and always the Strat with a Whammy. How in the hell does he get a Tele to sound like this?!?! The man is UNFREAKINGBELIEAVABLE.
interesting responses...i suppose opinions vary. i feel as though it's all a matter of what the listener wants to hear. i am a fan of Clapton, Beck, Page (his writing ability), SRV, etc. in my opinion Beck is an amazing player, his execution is over the top....you can see the emotional connection with his delivery.
the bass player is mo foster.

anybody can learn to play fast. there are little kids who can shred faster than the average guitar player.
but ultimately it's about feel and saying something through your instrument, having a "sound".
when you hear clapton you just know it's him.
all these shredders sound the same to me with the exception of a very few.
and furthermore half these guys couldn't play good rhythm guitar to save their lives.
learn how to play "let it rain" and see if you can sound as good as he did.

Clapton is fullfilling his perfect role here, back up to the greatness of Jeff Beck.
bohs1984 1 year ago
They're both great players with totally different styles. They're be a lot less argument about Beck's status if he hadn't had such personality issues through his career that scuppered many a group he was involved with. Instead he's become something of an icon for guitar aficionados. Clapton himself, some years ago, chose Beck above everyone else as the most multi-talented guitarist he'd ever seen. That's from a guy who has hung out with some of the best, including Page, Vaughan, and Hendrix.

I think the notion of music as a competition really is immature.
However... I kind of doubt Eric would want to follow that solo immediately.

This song changed my life back in '75.. As it turns out I'm not sure if it was for the better, all I knew is that I wanted to play the guitar like Jeff. Like a human voice. Make them laugh, make them cry, talk to them with nonsense and make it all make sense in the end.

joedodge1 1 year ago

Slowed down Layla, Cocaine, You look Wonderful tonight... give me a break!
zappa1952 1 year ago

It's not a Thinline or any other kind of production model... sadly:(

You'll find that track on Blow by Blow - an amazing album and one of many by Jeff Beck who is without doubt one of the most amazing and influencial guitarists off all time - he inspired many of todays ROCK giants and his technique has been emulated over and over again but non can still come close to the emotion and integrity of his playing!

sse by saying that you too, are doing the exact same thing as every1 else, and im gonna add my considerably knowledgeable opinion to this, hendrix is no way the best guitsrest ever, clapton is the greatest GUITAR player ever knowone can touch him, hendrix might be the most influencial or the most flamboyant guitar player ever, but there is just NOWAY anyone can touch clapton on guitar for shear ability. Bozzio also claims that while he does it with both hands it comes primarily from his right hand.
renduke 2 years ago 3
there"s no doubt that Roy Buchanan influenced Beck a great deal, Jeff even admits to borrowing from him to improve his sound, as this dedication (cause we"ve ended as lovers) proves how much he thought of Roy!
