It is sad that Joel has this problem but just because he "confronted" the older man at the construction site will not help his speech one bit, it only made him feel better about himself about being made fun of. It is true that all stutterers were teased terribly in school and this has had a terrible effect on them but to think that confronting the older man will fix this is unreal. Joel is a client of AIS and they are misguided in what can really help a stutterer. Joel will still be stuttering.
How is it "amazing" that Joel got the guy embarrassed enough to say he was laughing about his shirt instead of his speech? I mean I can see why the construction worker laughed, Joel walked up to him out of a clear blue sky and started to stutter with extreme blocks, something Joel would have avoided in the past but now is encouraged by AIS to do! AIS wants to continue to state that the Hollins program doesn't work and that all stutterers can do is assert themselves and AIS are experts.
I stutter too. I've always heard that intensive speech therapy works well and I'm thinking of signing up someday. Good luck with everything and don't worry about people who don't accept others who stutter or who are a little different from them. Those people aren't worth our time anyway.
@pinkflowers19 hope you do well with your speech therapy if you take it. I stutter too but I can understand why people have a hard time interacting with a person who stutters, it can be very difficult for them too. It is not a question of stutterers being " a little different from them", let's e honest, stutterers are very different from other people in how they talk. And to dismiss them as "not being worth our time" is self-defeating.

I wonder if the older man at the construction site thought that Joel was playing a joke on him when he walked up to him?
