WOW!! My Grandparent are Cherokee and Creek from Locust Grove, OK. on my Moms side. Dad side Mandan and Sioux from Fort Peck Rez Montana. very cool. Thanks for the music. The lyric: "My face is forever changing. I cried as you cut my hair. I didn't know that I needed fixing." almost made me cry. love it!!!!
I'm not here to somehow make it seem as if the atrocities that "white" (quotations because white is a color, not a race) people inflicted upon the natives here in america were any less than that, atrocities. But even I, who am Portuguese and Irish, can trace my blood back far enough to where my ancestors were discriminated against and murdered. Every race has, at one point or another, been oppressed; it'd be wise to remember that.
It appears that many have ancestors who go way back in time in their heritages. My Great Great Grandfather was Chief John Ross of the Cherokees and dedicated his life to helping the Cherokee people. This pretty girl sings a pretty song and is quite a lady who sings quite nicely.
I am a Tsalagiyi, brought up in my culture, I have been a firefighter, and a Combat Medic in Bagdad, my brothers, clan and tribe wear digital camo, ACU, This song is beautiful, and I am thankful for it,
yes, winterflower, you are right! I am white but I know it is still and has been a tragic situation since whites (Europeans ) arrived here. But only through education and communication can we understand each other. Most whites today think it is something that happened long ago and have no responsibility to you, and all Native Americans! That is the biggest mistake! Native Americans are still being mistreated today. And these things must be exposed! More Native videos, music, will help,in time.
and i dont think that we cherokee should hold a grudge against the children of people who mistreated us we should giive them a chance i may not have grown up wth the cherokee but that doesnt make a difference i know what my people went through and i think we should give the white man a chance
You guys are all crazy. The reason why so many people are mixed is because the natives fell in love with them. It's not our fault we're not pure blooded. I believe that if your one drop native american then your native american. In other cultures they believe this way and if someone shows interest in wanting to learn why not teach them instead of being so negative? I understand that some people today are still ignorant but you can't take it out on people that have never done anything to you!
I understand; I don't think you're hateful, I'm sorry if I sounded rude. :( My great (great-great?) grandmother on my father's side was Cherokee; I didn't know I had cherokee blood (albeit little) until I was much older. Now I'm trying to learn more about the culture, since it's part of my heritage. (have you ever felt there was a part of you missing? That's how I feel, and why I want to learn more.) You can add me if you want :) heh, I'm just an optimist/idealist...
I've Native American blood, I have pictured myself in their shoes. I'm aware that the past is still repeated (in many ways,) but what you're doing is just generating more hate. In the end you'll find yourself bitter with everything being just the same as it was yesterday. Again, I stand firm in saying language doesn't matter: impact does. Impact generates thought. Thought provokes initiatives. And that, my friend, produces change. Believe me, I'm no fan of what happened.
How is this disrespectful? It doesn't matter about how the song is sung, it's got a deep meaning to it, and that's all that matters. I think it's good for people to recognize the troubles of the past to help stop them from being repeated in the future.
AMAZING!!!! HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE BY FAR! i am only the second gen with mixed blood... i am cherokee through and through.... this song is so pure, soulful, just... wow... thank you... this song means a lot to me. Her voice, the lyrics, everything... i need more!!!! :)
Thank you so much for your kind words about my song!!! The album is for sale on my site, candicejarrett(dot)com- thank you so much again for your kind comment!!!! :) Best wishes, Candice
How can those people call the Cherokee "savages" just because they have different beliefs and lived differently? if that damn ex-president on that damn 20 dollar bill (forgot his name) wasn't so darn ignorant there wouldn't be so much pain and sorrow for the Cherokee. But I'm happy that we can live in a society that most people have sense of humor. The cherokee's are strong and wise people and I really admire them!
I have a book called the trail of tears, you can find it at barnes and noble or amazon... this is the book with the story that will rip your heart out... it gives all the details.
im half english and american and i inherited some cherokee from my american side and i have a brownish complexion and i dont know much about the cherokee people but i am going to try and learn stuff :D x Beautiful song good job :) x
Beautiful. I loved it. I'm not as much of a Cherokee as the rest of you, but I inherited most of the blood (if not all of it) from my grandmother that there was to inherit, and I'm proud of it. Again, great job.
Wado. this song brought tears to my eyes. i'm 1/2 Cherokee and very proud of it. I love talking about my ancestors every chance I get and it really upsets me that no where in all the schools I have been in do they talk about the Trail of Tears and what happened to the Native Americans :(
i to am 1/2 cherokee and i make sure that i teach my son about his beautiful ancestors and the truth of how the u.s.a. came to be.he asked me if that was the reason he loved animals and nature so much:)
Candice, I was actually looking for a song one day and saw ur cover to it. I have not been anywhere else on you tube besides your page since. I'm at a point in my life where your music is inspiring me to get back on my feet. I just want to thank you for the power behind your voice and music.
Thank you so much! I'm really happy you liked the song... "asequui" means "Free".... I definitely should have mentioned that with the lyrics! Thanks for bringing it up! :-)
I think its wonderful that there is so much support from the native community for your song. The words ring true, and what better way to remember our past (although i am menominee, not cherokee) than through what we do best- song? Uwoduhi!
mmm, mmm, mmm, you are so SWEET, you sing sweet, play sweet, you look sweet, and you are so REAL!, I feel the earth beneath YOUR feet!, peace and love...
I'm not Native American myself but I have a great deal of emotion invested in their beyond terrible treatment. Wonderful song, sorrowful but rightfully reflects the tragedy that was the trail of tears. I applaude you.

My ancestors were forced to walk the road on the "Trail of Tears" and my father was forced to have his hair cut and put in a school for young boys. He was 8 at the time. He got whipped for speaking our language and I do mean to say whipped as spankings weren't known at the time..As long as his blood runs thru my veins, I will never forget. It brought tears to my eyes! Swedenair thank you for sharing this with me. Thank you for posting this haunting song of Native Americans!
The same happened to my great grandfather...He was 12 at the time. I am 1/2 Cherokee and 1/4 Choctaw...the rest is some mix of Scandinavian, German, and English.
