Agreed - I've used that strategy in other racing games before - you actually maintain the speed better if you slow down for the turn and you are automatically flipped to the correct direction as well.
Nope, that was on purpose. Notice how the car doesn't slow down at all to make the turn, gets instantly turned around, and keeps most of its momentum. Unrealistic physics, sure, but a great strategy nonetheless.

@MikeLenoch5 No to powerslide around hairpin turns braking is a must otherwise you plain crash.
It's not as easy as it looks if you don't learn how to brake correctly you will crash and run out of time
