Tal can play anything. Nobody's making a 'mistake', rather this was her solo, and the drummer, rather than adapting to what she's actually playing, stuck to what he always plays. Great musicians immediately adapt because they see it as a challenge, and anyway it's easy for them, this drummer is good at what he does, it's just he's no Vinnie Colauita that's all. By contrast Tal occasionally deliberately throws in fusion riffs just to make things interesting. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not.
What I heard was Tal phrase accross the bar and the drummer looked abit surprised. INHO the drummer plays pretty square anyway. Jazz players tend to stretch and condense (breath) with the time more so than rock players. I've not heard any awkwardness in the Tal-Vinnie recordings.
I think all you guys ripping Tal should know if you dont she origanally was a Music Major of jazz guitar. With that she has all knowladge of scale work in relation to Chords and chord melody. She does rip it up and The drummer and her are actually right on the money. You should get off of the start on the root and end on the root mentality.Music is so far beyond that thinking now.But opinions are what drives alot of us musicians to improve on what they already know.Expanding the musical mind!!!
@colleenmanzi - I completely agree with you sir. Tal is bad ass, especially for her age. She will only get better with time! Imagine what she will sound like in ten years. I can definately hear a Marcus Miller influence in her playing and he`s one of my favorites of all time. Do you hear Marcus in her playing? I could be wrong though; I am a sax & keyboard player professionaly , but I also play a bit of guitar & bass just to understand more.
Not that pro musicians can't make mistakes, but this is a pretty common track for Matt Abts to handle on drums. Matt keeps his beat, I think any awkwardness comes from Tal's jazziness that aren't very natural to the rhythm.
Nice video!! Tal sounds good on bass. The sound is crisp and clear. By the way..... I know "that guy". He's usually sitting next to me at the Beacon Theater. He sure gets around. I think there was a few times I tried to set him on fire!! LOL
i kinda hate it when Tal goes through the cycle of 5th's and up the whole tone scale during her solo, it just doesn't sound like it fits in. I am entitled to my opinion.
@Darrells15or She is far from god. I agree that she is a very melodic bass player, but she doesn't seem to be too focused on REALLY locking in with the drummer. She still has quite a long way to go before she can be considered one of the great bassist of all time.
Um, she's 24 dude. Not too many people are considered "all-time greats" at that age (Hendrix and Charlie Parker come to mind). It usually takes a little longer than 4 or 5 years in the public eye to be considered a master. That's a lifetime achievement.
What she is is an extremely talented young musician who has obviously worked very hard at her craft. If she keeps at it and continues to learn, then the skies the limit.
Great video! Were you the guy standing at the front of the stage that basically shot the whole show but had the digital viewfinder on the camera off so it wasn't quite so obvious that you were shooting the entire show?
Haha, I don't think so cuz I was checkin the digi viewfinder as I was shooting it. I didn't move from that spot (in front of Jorgen) the entire show. I was wearing a black shirt, chinstrap facial hair and faux hawk. I sound like a douche when I read that back, heh. I'm 26, so somewhat young lookin.
Freaking awesome, going to see the Mule on the 27th , thanks for posting this, and screaming douche bag wasnt to bad, great job with teh sound and vid capture

Reply to Sk8er1103: Coming from a drummer with over 20 years pro experience - she is locked in - the drummer is off.

@dgdrummin She is off, very off, and sorry to say but kills the song entirely, never put this style bass player on this song

@MyInnerEyeMike she knows when to hold them and when to run, I couldn't do that on a lead with light strings. I'm impressed

Nah, I agree, heh. Really, I don't think ANYbody will ever top Victor Wooten's performance on The Deepest End. He really just tears it up on that!

Wooten is God. Period.
