Nella Fantasia used the same soundtrack as here but it was done without any input from the composer Ennio Morricone' There is a strong argument that this is these are the original lyrics as the were written in collaboration with Morricone,

@rynerich Listen to Sarah Brightman tell the tale of how this song came to be: She begged Ennio for a long time - he repeatedly refused her - to transform this piece into a proper song. After relenting to her, 'Nella Fantasia' was born. The original, 'Gabriel's Oboe' from 'The Mission' film score, has no words. Sarah Brightman made that happen. This song has been recorded so many times, it is quite refreshing to hear a new take on it. Brava Hayley!

@amusedbygod I know the story. But Ennio Morricone only allowed Sarah Brightman to use the score. He had no input into or gave approval for the lyrics used. In this case Hayley and Morricone worked together on the arrangement. It is a truly collaborative arrangement whereas the Brightman one was not. In interview Hayley has said that Ennio wanted to use her voice like another instrument in his orchestra.

@rynerich Well said, Sarah basically just took his score, and made a song out of it all by herself, simply put, Ennio did not care about what Sarah did with his piece, but as Rynerich said, Ennio made the "vocal arrangement" here, for the first time, this is the original vocal arrangement for the"song" version.

NO chum. The arrangement is ENTIRELY that of The Maestro, who writes every note of his own vast output (more soundtracks than John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry COMBINED) directly onto a full score. No tinkling at a piano. No computer software.

It is though "a truly collaborative".. song. It is possible though that NELLA FASTASIA will remain the global reference standard, in use with this melody.

It is well know that Ennio Morricone was extremely reluctant to allow Sarah Brightman to put words to his music. The fact that he worked witrh Hayley to produce new lyrics to this soundtrack speaks volumes about his thoughts on Nella Fantasia.

That would be 'Nella Fantasia', with lyrics by Chiara Ferraù, commissioned by Sarah Brightman. In the ENGLISH LANGUAGE, there are TRANSLATED lyrics sung by IL DIVO and a completely different song (lyric by M. Niedzwiedz) called 'A ROSE AMONG THORNS', first performed (I think) at Ennio's 75th Birthday Concert, November 10th 2003

@ynerich OF COURSE WE WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED. As fun as her Japanese albums were, they lacked the Westenwow pow. And emotion. I find it very very difficult to ever really hear emotion in Hayley's voice. I find her...all technical. While her voice alone is overwhelmingly beautiful, she doesn't convey personal emotion. However, this is without a doubt, the voice I would choose to die alongside with because despite the lack of emotion, her sound surpasses anything else I have ever heard in my life.

As one commentator said after her performance at the Christchurch Memorial Service - "Hayley Westenra stopped the day. She stopped the birds in the trees, did Hayley. The sun stopped moving across the sky and listened in wonder. The timing in her performance of Amazing Grace was extraordinary. You found yourself not breathing. Something very mature has happened to Hayley."

Basically its Nella Fantasia with different lyrics...ermm ok. I love the music , i think her voice fits the song perfectly but they should have kept the lyrics written by Brightman back on 1998.

The theme is Gabriel's Oboe written by Ennio Morricone for the film The Mission.Sarah Brightman liked the music so much she asked if she could put word to the music. Morricone initially refused her requested but eventually relented and Nella Fantasia was the result. However, Morricone was not involved in the production. Obviously in this case the lyrics of Whispers In A Dream have been approved by the master composer.

I could say 'this' is the 'original, vocal version of Gabriel's oboe, as these are the lyrics promoted by Ennio himself to be sung vocally, so there's no need that Hayley should consider the other versions ;) I'm really happy how original this album is! Way to go Hayley.

At the 75th Birthday Concert of ENNIO AMADEUS MORRICONE held on November 10, 2003 at the Royal Albert Hall in London, DULCE PONTES introduced 'A Rose Among Thorns' which is partly based on 'Gabriel's Oboe'.

Hayley's attempt is Ennio's grandfatherly indulgence.

@HughHueI'm still justified at my claim. Ennio's collaboration with Pontes just had his instrumental versions with lyrics. Vocal arrangements were never made for any of Ennio's pieces before. By this I mean, till now all the lyrical versions were basically lyrics put to the instrumental arrangements as they are. But, Hayley was the first person he made bespoke vocal arrangements to. So Dulce's was just the instrumental version with her voice added. But Hayley's is a new arrangement itself.

Absolutely not the case! The Maestro collaborated with Dulce Pontes (who also wrote lyrics to Morricone pieces) in EXACTLY the same way, as he had with French vocalist Mireille Matthieu years before, and Italian vocalist Mina before that. In ALL cases, ALL music was Composed, Orchestrated & Conducted by Morricone.

And why not let Hayley write some words of her own, when "Nella Fantasia" is so established?
