None of these words should be even remotely obscure to anyone who listens to any amount of indie music or who reads, both of which I have been doing avidly since I was two. The lyrics in this song are amazing. I still have to look them up in a dictionary every time I listen to this song, though, but not because I don't actually know what they all mean. I then post about it on the internet--because I'm smart, and I like to say things, which is a very important thing that I do on the internet.
Listen to you people, all so smug. I knew what every word meant not because I'm a voracious reader but because I'm a voracious reader of history. Someone could read a book a day but depending on the subject matter may never come across "parapets", "phalanx" or "coach and four". I give credit to those who bothered to look up words they don't know instead of knocking them for not knowing what they meant in the first place.
They played this song on "Mad Men". I figured it was some song from 1962 that I'd never heard before, but something kept telling me this was no 1962 song. Of course, I was right.
I understood all of the words except for infanta. Ironic in a sense. I learned it from watching hours of TV each day. I got a 2250 on the SAT without studying because I watched TV. I learned english because I watched TV. Tell that to people who say it melts your mind.
what words are so hard? lol are we really so stupid we don't know what concubine and pachyderm mean? phalanx? palanquin? sequin? jesus, read a fucking book.
@kyebean Palanquin and Infanta were the only terms I didn't know of before I heard this song. The others I've known since I was about 5. Seriously, doesn't anyone read these days?
@AngusSgXD Besides what Econniff is mentioning: "Sleepless". (It's (especially) awesome after 2:49.), "The Crane Wife Pt. 3", "Engine Driver", "January Hymn". The list goes on and on. :o)

Freakin awesome. My god, the most unique and diverse vocabulary. Probably one of the only songs that after I read the lyrics, I had to look up half of the words in the dictionary!
@Geezus66 Lol me too. I basically went through the whole thing and got all the words I didn't get cleared up. After I was done, the song became 1,000x better.
@Geezus66 Firstly, cheerz from Spain. And secondly, don't you worry. I am not sure, but probably, the most of the words you had to look up in the dictionary are just spanish. Infanta, for example, means princess (There are no princess in Spain cause it doesn't exist that title. By the way, fuck the Spaniards king and queen and viva la Republica!!!!). Take care, amigo. Palanquin means... well it is some sort of sedan chair. Don't u use the same word? My main conclusion is such a nice song

It doesn't matter if you know all the words or not. What matters is that you are listening to this and perhaps trying to learn them if you so desire.

@ScooterGirl9988 seems like your being smug your saying other people are so smug when your saying you know all the lyrics.

@AlphaNorcaili Infanta is a title given to the crown princess of Spain, I think.
