  • None of these words should be even remotely obscure to anyone who listens to any amount of indie music or who reads, both of which I have been doing avidly since I was two. The lyrics in this song are amazing. I still have to look them up in a dictionary every time I listen to this song, though, but not because I don't actually know what they all mean. I then post about it on the internet--because I'm smart, and I like to say things, which is a very important thing that I do on the internet.

  • This is what arrogant people hear in their head whenever they enter a room.

  • It doesn't matter if you know all the words or not. What matters is that you are listening to this and perhaps trying to learn them if you so desire.

  • @alexduccini lol i don't hink i'd be able to i can't figure out the strumming pattern because i can't even hear the guitar.

  • @hypergoofup In my head it goes like: DDUDDUDDUDUDU

  • in·fan·ta/inˈfantə/

    Noun:

A daughter of the ruling monarch of Spain or Portugal, esp. the eldest daughter who was not heir to the throne.

  • Listen to you people, all so smug. I knew what every word meant not because I'm a voracious reader but because I'm a voracious reader of history. Someone could read a book a day but depending on the subject matter may never come across "parapets", "phalanx" or "coach and four". I give credit to those who bothered to look up words they don't know instead of knocking them for not knowing what they meant in the first place.

  • @ScooterGirl9988 seems like your being smug your saying other people are so smug when your saying you know all the lyrics.

  • They played this song on "Mad Men". I figured it was some song from 1962 that I'd never heard before, but something kept telling me this was no 1962 song. Of course, I was right.

  • @AlphaNorcaili Infanta is a title given to the crown princess of Spain, I think.

  • I understood all of the words except for infanta. Ironic in a sense. I learned it from watching hours of TV each day. I got a 2250 on the SAT without studying because I watched TV. I learned english because I watched TV. Tell that to people who say it melts your mind.

  • 0 dislikes.

    keep it that way people.

  • what words are so hard? lol are we really so stupid we don't know what concubine and pachyderm mean? phalanx? palanquin? sequin? jesus, read a fucking book.

  • @kyebean Palanquin and Infanta were the only terms I didn't know of before I heard this song. The others I've known since I was about 5. Seriously, doesn't anyone read these days?

  • ive heard this in mad men and i love the song, does the band have any other song as good as this one?

  • @AngusSgXD "Sons and Daughters", "the Legionaire's Lament", 'The Mariner's Revenge", "O Valencia", "The Rake's Song". Oh and also everything else ;D

  • @AngusSgXD Besides what Econniff is mentioning: "Sleepless". (It's (especially) awesome after 2:49.), "The Crane Wife Pt. 3", "Engine Driver", "January Hymn". The list goes on and on. :o)

  • @AngusSgXD Every song is this good if not, Better! Check out the Crane Wife album.

  • I love the arab theme going through it

  • @Skinnyoompalumpa I actually sense some southern spanish influence too

  • Mad Men - 206.

A show covered in songs from the 50's / 60's grabs a quick appearance from the Decemberists.. Great band.

  • I understood each word of these lyrics. I need a life.

  • @Biverix Me too. Sigh.

  • @Biverix Same here. Often people inquire as to whether I "just read the fucking dictionary'. The sad part is, I do.

  • @Biverix none of those words were even remotely obscure

  • @LocustAnarchy Well, I would point out to you that most people have no idea what the words "pachyderm" or "folderol" mean.

  • The first time I saw them in concert, this was the opening song and it blew my mind. <3 them!

  • epic song is epic.

  • amazing <3

  • Freakin awesome. My god, the most unique and diverse vocabulary. Probably one of the only songs that after I read the lyrics, I had to look up half of the words in the dictionary!

  • @confirmed4brawl he may not have the most amazing vocabulary, but they use a lot of unusual words, not that i dont know them though

  • @Geezus66 Lol me too. I basically went through the whole thing and got all the words I didn't get cleared up. After I was done, the song became 1,000x better.

  • @Geezus66 Firstly, cheerz from Spain. And secondly, don't you worry. I am not sure, but probably, the most of the words you had to look up in the dictionary are just spanish. Infanta, for example, means princess (There are no princess in Spain cause it doesn't exist that title. By the way, fuck the Spaniards king and queen and viva la Republica!!!!). Take care, amigo. Palanquin means... well it is some sort of sedan chair. Don't u use the same word? My main conclusion is such a nice song

  • @Geezus66 You should read more often.

  • @BlueBe7a I try to read whenever I'm not too busy.

  • @remembersadako It's because it's a kickass song by a kickass band. Much better than mainstream rock/pop shit out there, now.

  • Heard this song on Mad Men the other day...LOVE IT!

  • @SUPERSWIFTEH me too

  • EPIC!

  • Good one!
