WOW JUST WOW! but why doesn't it fight back? or a least move? do they not move at that age if not where is it's mother? and why don't the guy save it instead of talking about it getting eaten
Albatross have no natural enemies. They have no instinct or training to defend themselves in any way. Researchers go up to the nest and just push the mother out of the way to measure and weigh eggs then just push her back onto the egg.
Introduce the black snake. Fight nature with nature. I'm not sure if black snakes eat eggs. That would be a problem if they did because after the mice are wiped out they may go for the bird eggs. Maybe a small rat snake that can not put it's mouth around those bird eggs but yet can eat the mice.
Sad but true. Anytime an alien species is introduced the local population suffers. Brown snakes introduced to the Phillipines ate every last bird there. they were brought in to eat the rats. Go figure-huh?
Hi. This is one of the problems sea birds are having. I use to study them into the ocean, trying to figure out the many things affecting their population. My main work is on trawler fishing boats overseas. I had produce a book on that and enclosing you a video of a this "Photographic Guide of South Atlantic Sea Birds Identification". Hope you enjoy it.Regards.
You idiots. Gough Island is one of the remotest islands in the world. It has been isolated for tens of millions of years. The introduction of mice to the island in the past 200-300 years is a blip on the evolutionary time scale. Birds cannot adapt that fast.
Reference the exponential spread of the cane toad in Australia, thousands of miles from its natural environment in Central America. Australian fauna have not had time to adapt, and are being decimated as a result.
Killaboy9900 I kinda see where you're coming from but the difference is that the rodents were introduced to the island and adversely affecting the seabird population. It is probably way too late for it but the person/people who introduced them should be held responsible...
The parents spend a lot of their time foraging at sea. Even if they do return in time many of the chicks still die of infection due to the open wounds.
maybe it can't feel the mice biting and eating it and therefore it doesn't react until its too late. but yeah weird that it doesn't do anything to fight back. its like the bird lost its basic instincts.
the bird for millions of years lived on Gough Island without having any natural predators. So, once the mice was introduced, they have no natural defenses against them.
Evolution does suggest that, if mice can become carnivorous, the birds can also learn to fight back. But, obviously, it's not happening at the moment, as many species of birds have gone extinct.
@MahlerTitan Much like the dodo, they had no natural enemies, therefore had no fear of the humans who hunted them to extinction. Had they feared them, it would've triggered a flight or flight response could have given them at least a fighting chance at survival. Even more unfortunate, dodos never had a chance to evolve to where they could develop some sort of defense that could be passed on to their descendants, as they were all wiped out less than a century after man first encountered them.
@MahlerTitan What? Mice are omnivores. They commonly eat each other even if given the opportunity. Mothers eat their babies if there isn't enough food around or they feel like they have too many. Have you ever had pet mice? I've even seen mice, dead in traps, half eaten by other mice. Introduced rats and mice like these have caused havoc across much of the south pacific and many species have gone extinct already. Without control, these birds will as well.
Mice and baby birds. That's simultaneously the cutest and most horrifying video I've ever seen :-P

Quite human...

@SafetyChris baby birds dont have a lot of mobility...and also, why do predators always start at the butt.... :/
