Good point Hank, manufacturing jobs are becoming non-existent here in the U.S. I could see the new wave of alternative energy technologies replacing some of the lost jobs... but it's clear that the gap between the rich and the poor is growing (most of which is determined by higher education).

If we didn't have so much government regulation favoring big business over small business, then perhaps there would be businesses for them to work in, or even start their own businesses.
The same thing happens in the financial markets, where the government favors big banks over credit unions.

I can't disagree with you, but one thing we do have going for our country is the higher education/university system. It's a fact, the best and brightest of the world come from (publicly subsidized) US colleges. Harvard, Yale, MIT, U of M, Stanford, Brown, Texas A & M, Dartmouth - the list goes on and on! you can't say the best come from US colleges. But it's a fact they are good. But not exceptional if you look at it at world-level. And anyway, most colleges and university's in America are very easy to graduate from. It's good that there are some good ones to compensate for that.

The Canadian government supports mining interests to go into poor areas and, use mountaintop removal techniques to retrieve gold and, other minerals. This is actually not profitable for the company to do itself and, needs governemtn tax breaks and, subsidies.

in western/american standards you can say that. But the value of education is a difficult thing to compare, cause cultures still differ a lot. I find my university quite good, because it fits right in to my cultural thinking. I don't have a clue if it's better then one in an other part of the world, but that doesn't matter at all. In the end there is still too much not known about education to make such big assumptions.

NYC, Detroit, and Chicago public schools are horrible - with graduation rates below 50% of students. Just like the superintendant said in the clip, many of these kids can't even read!

What we learn in schools is mostly pointless. We forget most of it and what we remember doesn't have much practical application in life. We get fed this propoganda that without an "education" we can't do well. The reality is that education can come from many sources, not just school. I've learned much more useful info of the net and from reading and obeserving life than any class. Its a shame the system this society has created. Your education, whether formal or informal (and I'm talking about EVERYTHING you learn), will shape the most minute to the most important choices you make in life. You're right in saying that education comes from many sources, and a lot of the most important things you learn are attained outside of school.

I'm half way through (and watching) and while this is one example of "change" I'm skeptical of the New York DOE on the whole because our education system is notorious for 'teaching to the test' ... when the system is based on this, no true learning can take place in such an environment. My advice to any victim of this system that may be reading this is go out and seek knowledge on your own because if you're counting on the 'system' to educate, you're bound to be intellectually bankrupt.

Part of the US ed program works by forcing students to memorize useless factoids, (Texts generally impart facts rather than telling how to gather facts, etc)
This is why, for example, Medicine in the USA is ranked 54th!
US Physicians are just about the only in the world NOT to learn by "problem solving" nor "deductive reasoning" -- Rather docs learn to memorize zillions of useless disjointed factoids, (and usually of the most obscure & useless information)

You can't force people to learn but you can create an environment where they can learn. Some schools here in the US are so bad kids have no chance to learn. Well in my country resources are scarce and manpower limited, therefore the only way we can compete is in a knowlede based economy. So our lives are pretty much determined by papers and it's is incredibly stressful..
Bronx labs is a great example of how an education system should thrive to be, I do hope that your country could emulate its formulae in all schools.
