My grandparents watched this on CBS during the 1970s!! The theme would wake me up at night hearing the theme going. This specific theme from 1978 goes at a much more gradual speed than most of the other seasons' themes. Quinn Martin was a great Executive Producer!!! Most of today's producers do not have what it takes to produce great quality and quantity TV series. The acting was much better as well.
I was born in 63....back then they were true moviestars! Not like the crap today! Best tv shows growing up in late 60s-70s.Even the food tasted better!
I always thought they should have had an episode with Raymond Bailey in it as the criminal. For those of you who don't know who Raymond Bailey was, he was the guy who played the semi crooked banker, Drysdale on Buddy Ebsen's other famous TV series, The Beverly Hillbillies.
We had no idea back then how much things were going to change. I can almost see myself on the floor of my grandparents house watching this, they loved Buddy. You could turn on your TV with three net works and maybe 1 or 2 locals stations and ALWAYS find something to watch. Now we have tons of stations and nothing worth a half hour of your time. I miss this period of our lives, innocence soon to be lost.
@wheresthebeeph God you took the words right out of my mouth. This use to play late at night on Sunday nights when I was growing up. It would come on rigth after Friday the 13th the series on NBC. I didn't have a tv in my room so I'd make up an excuse to sleep in my mom's room and when she fell a sleep I'd turn the tv to this. I too miss this time in life. Everything was so much simpler then. It's times like this that make me wish that there was a time machine.
Ebson was the orginal Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, but lost the part after a few weeks of filming because the aluminum powder make-up caused respitory failure. He was recuperating in hospital when they fired him.
I loved the intro to Barnaby Jones, mostly because of the role call of no-name guest "stars" featured after the real stars of the show. Who in the world were these people? You never heard of them then and you definitely haven't heard of them since. And they all have these very generic names.
@BrianVagell : Martin Kove went on to a successful career...he co-starred on Cagney & Lacey and was in one of the Karate Kid movies, if I recall correctly.
One author called Barnaby Jones as the "Droopy Dog" of tv private eyes. No matter where the bad guys run away to, they would always turn around and see droopy old Barnaby standing behind them! The bad guys did all the sweating and yelling while calm Barnaby would quietly investigate the crimes and getting the bad guys ready for delivery to the cops.
This show was great...I had to hear the music before my parents made me go bed. Once in a while I was allowed to stay up and watch....though it seemed funny when Barnaby would beat up three muscle men at the same time.
The old joke was that Barnaby was the geriatric detective for the old folks. I think that is a simplification. All ages enjoyed him. good scripts, acting.
I met Lee Meriweather at the beginning of April this year at WonderCon in San Francisco. She was very nice, and had said that it was sheer bliss working with Buddy Ebsen, and that she was happy ("Finally!") that the DVDs for this show were released. :)
does anyone know the name of the episode where this creepy little girl was the key to identifying a killer, because she remembered overhearing the killer repeat "he's my husband, he's my husband" over and over again
All I remember is this polite old dude who seemed half asleep a lot of the time. He just hung around until the scriptwiters had solved the crime. But yes - of course - I watched it ever week in the '70's.

At least Buddy Ebsen (B. Jones) had his own show. :-)
@fromthesidelines Thanks for that bit of trivia... I was curious to who the announcer was & google search led me to your comment. thanks for taking the time to add that info.
I used to watch this show like this with my dad when I was a kid, Mannix, Cannon,
The Rockford Files, The Streets of San Francisco, etc. Because we only had 1 tv and it was a black and white set, lol. About 5 channels, sure brings back the memories, times were simpler back then, and, I was happier then.
@ToddInLN52254 Nah, it's cool. After I wrote that ,I remembered, that around '78 my parents got a Color tv console. I managed to see 'em in color after all. Wished they would bring back those shows. They have enough comedy re-runs.
@tujohnboy for a while a few years back some of those old shows were on WGN later in the evening, but you're right, you can only watch so many reruns of "king of queens" and "will and grace"!!!!!!!!
I grew up with this show along with Mannix, the Rockford Files, and Cannon. Unfortunately today's audiences just don't appreciate this style of storytelling anymore.
@Frankd, thanks for that info. I always wondered on TV shows did the Car company let them use them free to get them on TV.. Bewitched used Chevrolet dream of Jeannie and My 3 son's used Pontiac's.
for one thing. It was for good publicity and PR as well. The Fugitive, The FBI, The Streets Of San Francisco also used Fords, MISSION Impossible The Brady Bunchand Mannix used Chrysler cars.
the Barracuda convertible would be worth about $15,000 to $20,000. The first two seasons Michael Brady drove a 1969 and 1970 Plymouth Fury Convertible. I saw a 1970 model at a car show and it was blue in color. the man who owns it wore a leisure suit to the show ans told me. Mike's Outfit
Wow! I remember my grandma watching this show when I was a kid. Hadn't seen it since, but as soon as the music started and the announcer came on it all came rushing back to me. The memory is truly an amazing thing. Thanks for the warm n' fuzzy nostalgic trip!
