  • A QUINN MARTIN PRODUCTION

  • My grandparents watched this on CBS during the 1970s!! The theme would wake me up at night hearing the theme going. This specific theme from 1978 goes at a much more gradual speed than most of the other seasons' themes. Quinn Martin was a great Executive Producer!!! Most of today's producers do not have what it takes to produce great quality and quantity TV series. The acting was much better as well.

  • I was born in 63....back then they were true moviestars! Not like the crap today! Best tv shows growing up in late 60s-70s.Even the food tasted better!

  • My grandmother use to love this show back in the '70s!

  • I always thought they should have had an episode with Raymond Bailey in it as the criminal. For those of you who don't know who Raymond Bailey was, he was the guy who played the semi crooked banker, Drysdale on Buddy Ebsen's other famous TV series, The Beverly Hillbillies.

  • Growing up, my parents watched Barnaby Jones. Being a kid, the only thing I enjoyed about it was this cool theme...and Lee Meriwether.

As of 11/7/11, three people were not Jonesin'.

  • "...and also staring Catwoman....."

  • Marty Kove?!

  • @PizzaDinosaur Kreese himself. Probably swept Barnaby's leg

  • We had no idea back then how much things were going to change. I can almost see myself on the floor of my grandparents house watching this, they loved Buddy. You could turn on your TV with three net works and maybe 1 or 2 locals stations and ALWAYS find something to watch. Now we have tons of stations and nothing worth a half hour of your time. I miss this period of our lives, innocence soon to be lost.

  • @wheresthebeeph God you took the words right out of my mouth. This use to play late at night on Sunday nights when I was growing up. It would come on rigth after Friday the 13th the series on NBC. I didn't have a tv in my room so I'd make up an excuse to sleep in my mom's room and when she fell a sleep I'd turn the tv to this. I too miss this time in life. Everything was so much simpler then. It's times like this that make me wish that there was a time machine.

  • i like this version of barnaby jones, and the bell has perfect timing.

  • Does anyone know where I can view Barnaby Jones episode called "Blood Vengeance" ? Thanks

  • Ebson was the orginal Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, but lost the part after a few weeks of filming because the aluminum powder make-up caused respitory failure. He was recuperating in hospital when they fired him.

  • Jerry Goldsmith theme

  • I loved the intro to Barnaby Jones, mostly because of the role call of no-name guest "stars" featured after the real stars of the show. Who in the world were these people? You never heard of them then and you definitely haven't heard of them since. And they all have these very generic names.

  • @BrianVagell : Martin Kove went on to a successful career...he co-starred on Cagney & Lacey and was in one of the Karate Kid movies, if I recall correctly.

  • Boy, what a happier time. I miss those days.

  • This music should be used for all local crime updates on radio

  • The late Buddy Ebsen from Jed Clampett to Barnaby Jones.

  • Cool theme music.

  • One author called Barnaby Jones as the "Droopy Dog" of tv private eyes. No matter where the bad guys run away to, they would always turn around and see droopy old Barnaby standing behind them! The bad guys did all the sweating and yelling while calm Barnaby would quietly investigate the crimes and getting the bad guys ready for delivery to the cops.

  • Love this season 1 opening that is slower than the later years.

  • @MultiJRobert : This is NOT from season one...it's from the second-to-last season, 1978-79.

  • @recordman64 I am corrected. I still like it better.

  • @MultiJRobert : The slower version is better, I agree.

  • This show was great...I had to hear the music before my parents made me go bed. Once in a while I was allowed to stay up and watch....though it seemed funny when Barnaby would beat up three muscle men at the same time.

  • The old joke was that Barnaby was the geriatric detective for the old folks. I think that is a simplification. All ages enjoyed him. good scripts, acting.

  • I met Lee Meriweather at the beginning of April this year at WonderCon in San Francisco. She was very nice, and had said that it was sheer bliss working with Buddy Ebsen, and that she was happy ("Finally!") that the DVDs for this show were released. :)

  • Julie Hill was a good looking chick, whoever she was.

  • Greatest show in history- except for KOJAK

  • PEOPLE LET ME TELL YOU 'BOUT MY NEW BEST FRIEND.

    BARNABY JONES!!

    ..

    NAP!

  • A QUINN MARTIN PRODUCTION

  • I don't know why Lee Meriwether is on this show.

She still has not recovered Doug and Tony from the Tunnel yet!

  • does anyone know the name of the episode where this creepy little girl was the key to identifying a killer, because she remembered overhearing the killer repeat "he's my husband, he's my husband" over and over again

  • I'd love to see the episode that Sean Penn was in.

  • I'd love to see the episode that Sean Penn was in.

  • Barnaby Jones, Ironside, Kojak, Cannon, Police Woman...they don't make 'em like they used to!

  • @HGbunny Don't forget Columbo - CAN'T FORGET COLUMBO...!!!

  • @harrison58 You are too right!

  • All I remember is this polite old dude who seemed half asleep a lot of the time. He just hung around until the scriptwiters had solved the crime. But yes - of course - I watched it ever week in the '70's.

Now I"M THIS OLD DUDE who seems half asleep most of the time.

At least Buddy Ebsen (B. Jones) had his own show. :-)

  • Damn, I was 6 years old for this particular intro... I saw the Roman numerals MCMLXXVIII - which translates into 1978. Now I feel old. :(

  • The announcer was Quinn Martin's regular voice-over during the '70s, Hank Simms.

  • @fromthesidelines Thanks for that bit of trivia... I was curious to who the announcer was & google search led me to your comment. thanks for taking the time to add that info.

  • 2 things I remember most about this show, Barnaby always shooting the gun out of the bad guy's hand, and his famous glass of milk!

  • Never mess with Uncle Jed.

  • One thing about these Quinn Martin shows is the "guest stars". When their names are mentioned, 90% of the time you say "Who?"

  • @MrSammyReed Yeah, but that one chick Julie Hills was HOT. And MARTIN KOVE was the evil dojo owner from THE KARATE KID...

  • @stableshadow

    No argument from me, pal.

For me, though, it's a coin-toss between Julie and Hillary Thompson!

  • If you all watch this clip you'll see that Sensei Kreese from the Karate Kid is one of the guest stars...

  • Tonight's Episode .. MILK DRINKER BLUES......LOL

  • I just watched the entire first season back to back and I now need a twinkie and warm gkass of milk.

  • MARTIN KOVE! Did he tell Barnaby Jones, "Sweep the leg!"???

  • I used to watch this show like this with my dad when I was a kid, Mannix, Cannon,

The Rockford Files, The Streets of San Francisco, etc. Because we only had 1 tv and it was a black and white set, lol. About 5 channels, sure brings back the memories, times were simpler back then, and, I was happier then.

  • @tujohnboy

wow, same with me, just the opening theme brings back so many memories of being a kid and watching TV with my Dad...

  • @tujohnboy too bad. I watched these in color layin on the floor in front of my grandparents console tv. It was awesome!

  • @ToddInLN52254 Nah, it's cool. After I wrote that ,I remembered, that around '78 my parents got a Color tv console. I managed to see 'em in color after all. Wished they would bring back those shows. They have enough comedy re-runs.

  • @tujohnboy for a while a few years back some of those old shows were on WGN later in the evening, but you're right, you can only watch so many reruns of "king of queens" and "will and grace"!!!!!!!!

  • @tujohnboy Yer right... you seem so much more timid these days.

  • I am thrilled to see some of these classic 70's detective shows being available on DVD now. Brings back so many memories

  • I grew up with this show along with Mannix, the Rockford Files, and Cannon. Unfortunately today's audiences just don't appreciate this style of storytelling anymore.

  • Barnaby Jones......Tonight's episode... THE MILK DRINKER AT THE BAR.......LOL

  • Barnaby Jones Season One is on dvd now i saw it at Best Buy yesterday.

  • @The1baddman Is it really, welp im goin to get it now!!

  • lmao..wtf?

  • LOL, Nest of Scorpions - such greatness. I love the 70s.

  • episode aired on 10/26/78

  • "Barnaby Jones - Season One" to be released on DVD February 16, 2010. I can't wait!

  • I was 13 when this started, loved the show and his LTD. Thanks for the info on the DVD, i will be there to get it. Those were the good old days.....

  • Quinn Martin used ford cars. all his cars were brown colored and where either the brougham or landau model 2-door coups

  • @Frankd, thanks for that info. I always wondered on TV shows did the Car company let them use them free to get them on TV.. Bewitched used Chevrolet dream of Jeannie and My 3 son's used Pontiac's.

  • for one thing. It was for good publicity and PR as well. The Fugitive, The FBI, The Streets Of San Francisco also used Fords, MISSION Impossible The Brady Bunchand Mannix used Chrysler cars.

  • @frankd1965

In many episodes of the Brady Bunch, Mr. Brady has a convertible Barracuda. One can only wonder how much that car would be worth today.

  • the Barracuda convertible would be worth about $15,000 to $20,000. The first two seasons Michael Brady drove a 1969 and 1970 Plymouth Fury Convertible. I saw a 1970 model at a car show and it was blue in color. the man who owns it wore a leisure suit to the show ans told me. Mike's Outfit

  • I had to order it, Lot us must have loved the show. I call every day. Wish we still had TV like we did in those days. wonderful times.

  • me and my mother watched it ,

  • Used to love this show when I was little.

  • far-out

  • Wow! I remember my grandma watching this show when I was a kid. Hadn't seen it since, but as soon as the music started and the announcer came on it all came rushing back to me. The memory is truly an amazing thing. Thanks for the warm n' fuzzy nostalgic trip!

  • linda cancion de mi ninez

  • I loved this music when I was a kid.

  • Finally some goodnews barnaby jones is

gonna be released in febuary of 2010

  • I'm glad of it finally coming out. I got to meet Lee M. at a Dragoncon one time. She was a classy and great lady to speak to. I will be glad to get my copies.

  • This show is long overdue for release on DVD!!

What are the studios waiting for??

  • Besides the basics, I want to see some BJ episodes, or clips when Jones is in action or is apprehending criminals. I want to see how he does it. Thanks.

  • John Carter must have had a bad agent. I don't think he ever made the opening credits.

  • Yes, he did, in two episodes: "Temptation", the one episode that was mostly about Lt. Biddle, from the '78-'79 season, and I think "Dangerous Summer" was the other one.

Don't feel too badly for him: Carter also got to DIRECT two episodes of Barnaby Jones: "A Short, Happy Life" and "Run to Death".

  • I WISHED THIS SHOW WAS ON DVD

  • I second that. And NO monkeying with the original music.

  • well if this show is ever released on dvd cbs parmaount will have the rights and you know what they do to the music on classic tv series

  • ME TOO!!!!

  • your not the only one

  • I can make copies. I have every episode.

  • I am wondering if I send you the blank dvds to you; can you make the copies of all the shows please? I am a huge fan of the show.

  • no shit!!!! great show,huh?

  • Ah, Lee Meriwether - amazing. Former Miss America from San Francisco, back when you couldn't tell a woman was from SF just by looking at her.

  • loved this show!

  • alice hirson played punk andersons wife

    on dallas

  • I want to see the episode with Alice Cooper where he gets caught with an underage girl in the back of a school bus during a softball match !

  • Barnaby Jones!!!

No, we can never go back to Arizona!!

  • Oh God, its Arizona all over again.

  • Years after the show ended, I managed to get the p.o. box number for Buddy Ebsen. I wrote a letter and actually got a reply and autographed Buddy Ebsen --American Dance Machine-- photo (a dance show he was doing at the time) personally made out to me. That was such a thrill.

  • That's awesome. He seems like he was probably a true gentleman.

  • @BurgerChefGuy, lucky you. He was a good actor, & lived in the St.Louis area til his death in 2003. I wish i got lucky as you did, but at less we had him in the area.

  • The theme from this series always seemed oddly wistful and melancholic to me...

  • Yeah, I used to tune in just to listen to it,then not watch the show. I grew up to become a flute player, maybe partly because of this show...(and Jethro Tull???)

  • That's interesting!

Another favourite theme of mine is that of a current British TV series - see, or rather listen to it on Youtube - Doc Martin Theme.

Again it's one of those rather wistful themes, you might need to view the show to put it in context.

  • I would listen to the theme and then not watch the show too.

  • Can someone mmake a video of pearl & ruby please

  • I loved this show as a kid. I used to watch the re-runs. One of my all time favorite detective shows.

  • I have some of Barnaby Jones on DVDs and they are always good to watch when there is nothing to do.

  • Great detective show. Watched it all the time growing up.

  • Terrific show!

  • What was with all the QM productions??

Great theme songs then the announcer would come on a have to read you the credits!!

  • Because it was MUCH cheaper to ANNOUNCE the credits than have to optically insert them over moving video. Especially, since each QM production had it's own signature shape reveal. (Cannon used circies, Barnaby Jones used rectangles and so on.)

  • Also, it was something of a nostalgic holdover from the days of radio drama. In the '60s & '70s there were still many people working in television who had gotten their start in radio.

  • Barnaby Jones's font was Cooper. Does anyone know the font used on the TV show Cannon?

  • Quinn Martin was a preeminent/prolific producer in the 60s and 70s. Other QM

    productions included "The FBI" and

    Cannon among others.

  • Don't forget "The Streets Of San Francisco" with Karl Malden, and a then unknown Michael Douglas.

  • but, I noticed they did super the stars and guest stars on Streets while most of the other QM shows only had the announcer V/O and no matter how many names were listed, the announcer never used "and" or other connecting words

  • There were many instances where 'and' was used in the guest cast of a QM show. To wit, the guest cast of The FBI ep "The Predators", in this order: Linden Chiles, Diana Van Der Vlis with Special Guest Star Mark Richman and Nico Minardos as whatever part he played. They did this in quite a few shows.

  • but the ones where the announcer didn't use "and" such as this one stick out in my mind .. and most if not all of the QM shows used the Act I-IV and Epilogue format .. in many ways, you knew you were watching a QM product..

  • It was QM's trademark...he first started doing this when he produced The Untouchables, then continued it when he formed his own company.

  • totally....I always loved QM Productions intros

  • whats taking so long for barnaby jones to

    released out on dvd

  • I used to be stuck watching this show w/ my mom growing up. Not such a bad show after all.

  • Loved this series, thanks for the memories.

  • Hey I recognize guest star Martin Kove! Didn't he play the dumb blonde on Cagney and Lacey?

  • Yes. He was also in the Karate Kid movies;)

  • Ouinn Martin certainly owned 70's television!

  • @JP5466 agreeed

  • I loved watching this show! Quinn Martin was brilliant. What is sick and sad is that I was in sixth grade and watched this show religiously....
