Death Note and Code Geass are two of my favourite animes, and while looking for another similar to those, I was directed to Monster. I started watching and after about ep 3 or 4 I got into it, then around the 20s is slowed down. The 30s were a crawl. I'm on ep 40 now, and OMG IT IS SO F-ING SLOW! I read a review, and I agree with its assessment that the story could've been told in half the number of episodes without losing anything...
@kindred84 Ghost Hound, Serial Experiments Lain, Ghost in the Shell, and Neon Genesis Evangelion should be among your favourites too, and if they aren't, they will be after you watch them once

@fmabfma i think it was to resemble his sister. That way, even though Anna was gone, he has a "backup Anna". It's to confuse Bonaparta and his mother when they came to get one of the twins. It kinda relates to how he says that Anna and him are one, there really isn't any difference.
I think you should hold back a bit on the spoilers, and try to sound less as if you're reading from a script. :) Not hating though, just some constructive criticism.
i honestly prefer it in enlgish dubbed. makes it feel more authentic as they are europeans. the english voice actors are spot on. Inspector Lunge sounds so much better than Runge. btw episode 59 is some of the deepest shit ive seen in a movie, tv show or anything else for a long time
@siccmadegames I watch it subbed, mainly because the dub seems to change some of the music in the series. But that's just me. I heard the dub voices and they sounded spot-on.

Monster is not as psychological as it likes to seem. Borderline creepy, maybe. It's greatest strength is its villians (Johann? Epic evil!) and how drastically the main character changes (plenty of animes forget that we are on a JOURNEY with characters and should end in a new place mentally). Still, overall, it can't compare as a mystery/psych genre to masterpieces like Liar Game, and horror pieces like Oyasumi Punpun.
I'm sure you've heard this before but...ever heard of someone on YouTube named, "the4toedjoe?" He posts a lot of commentaries for a bunch of my favorite RPGs, and you sound just like him.
it's also available on Netflix & Hulu under "N" for Naoki Urasawas "Monster" and I totally agree. This is one of the best Anime series I've ever watched, and I've seen a few. It's on par with some of the more serious cable shows.

Maybe u should try Hell Girl, its an interesting concepts of a mysterious website that allows u to send a person u hate immediately to hell. But in return, u must also go 2 hell when u die. @killerk565656 I googled "anime like death note" and got monster and code geass on yahoo! answers. I watched AND loved all three series. Monster is like death note, but extended. You probably like anime that have a realistic art style, guns and occasional blood spill, psychotic faces and scary dialogue and moving emotions. Monster has all of it. It requires just a little more patience as there are MANY characters introduced in the series. An EPIC anime, but i found the end a little disappointing

I'm very glad that you gave Monster a perfect score, because that's exactly what I would do. It's the absolute best anime and manga that I've come across. I would still be worshipping that popular Shounen crap if I didn't see this. It's so realistic but also thrilling and unpredictable.
I've already got the first box set, but VizMedia is likely not to release any others! So people, go and buy it! It comes with both sub and dub versions and other features. We should have the other box sets!

Is the English Dub worth watching? That seems to be the only version I can get my hands on. And to the guy asking whether this is better than DeathNote; I didn't fully like DeathNote. It was okay but the perfect logic that the two main characters had was wholly unbelievable. Yeah, they were both geniuses but still... and the ending was unsatisfying as well. Along with a another thing that happens halfway through which I won't spoil but I'm sure most people would agree with.

Oh, Yeah, Yokurama, the english dub of this series is phenomenal, its just really really good!
My favorites are Liam O'Brian as Tenma, Keith Silverstein as Johan, & Laura Bailey as Dieter, all the actors are excellent in their roles, but man, this dub is just that good=) And, yes, I agree that this the show, Monster, is underrated & Death Note overrated, but I really love them both=D I can't remember how I got into this show, but, yeah, awsome series!!!

Vagabond try it, story of Musashi. Artist is Inoue Takehiko ( the one who made slamdunk) you shouldnt miss this manga, Inoue is a legend amongst mangaka.

It's quite good as it has all the elements it should, you described the characters without spoiling the series, described the animation style and sounds, and dub vs sub, which is good. You seem to have either read the review which implies good preparation skills or else you have a good knack for providing descriptions without shuddering. You should speak a bit quicker though and again, it should be shorter. Take Care.

I thought this anime was cool, I was gonna buy it at a store when I first saw it. But when I went to look for it a second time, it was already gone. Its a shame that there was only one box-set released...it would be cool if it got licensed again.

This is why I find people like Red Skull and Black Mask to be much more scarier than villains like Freddy Krueger.
I wouldn't be surprised if Criminal Minds/Any crime drama show put in their own version of Johan Liebert as their main villain.

Monster is more about ethics, philosophy, and characterization.

Oh, Yeah, Yokurama, the english dub of this series is phenomenal, its just really really good!
My favorites are Liam O'Brian as Tenma, Keith Silverstein as Johan, & Laura Bailey as Dieter, all the actors are excellent in their roles, but man, this dub is just that good=) And, yes, I agree that this the show, Monster, is underrated & Death Note overrated, but I really love them both=D I can't remember how I got into this show, but, yeah, awsome series!!!

Yeah, Monster is one of my absolute favorite anime series of all time=D FREAKIN EPIC OPENING!! See kids, sometimes just instramental music with creepy sounds is more awsome than actual lyrical J-pop songs=) Dr. Kenzo Tenma, Johan Liebert, Anna/Nina, Dieter, & Grimmer are all awsome! Oh, and Lunge, the detective obsessed with pinning Tenma as the suspect on all those murders!!! Gosh, I FREAKIN LOVE THIS DAMN SHOWXD Screw you Viz for not releasing the rest on boxsets, YOU SUCK VIZ!!>=P

Vagabond try it, story of Musashi. Artist is Inoue Takehiko ( the one who made slamdunk) you shouldnt miss this manga, Inoue is a legend amongst mangaka.

@YokuramaGameTalk Very well, I have some spare time and I'll listen to it. It's quite good as it has all the elements it should, you described the characters without spoiling the series, described the animation style and sounds, and dub vs sub, which is good. You seem to have either read the review which implies good preparation skills or else you have a good knack for providing descriptions without shuddering. You should speak a bit quicker though and again, it should be shorter. Take Care.

Thank fucking god, you're not another moron reviewing Naratard and Bleach. Monsters pretty lengthy but it doesn't have the filler bullshit Shounen tends to have. I'm glad you're trying to introduce anime fans into some better stuff, people need to explore more things that don't involve powering up for 4 episodes with a character saying from afar, "this...this power...I've never seen anything like it!"

oh god I HATE it when characters do that. That's why I avoid anime like that :P
I question the intelligence of people who find Monster extremely confusing. Come on guys, it's not THAT complicated. just pay attention and connect the storylines together. Others get bored easily when there's no action, hot bishies or convoluted plot twist every episode. It's really unfortunate.

@ArcadeFire777 Well, those 2 animes aren't bad, but they're used so much that they become generic and mostly boring for more "experienced" anime watchers., but yeah I agree as well, you should watch Trigun the end is really heavy.

But in any case, Naruto and Bleach are Shonen. Monster is Seinen. They are meant for different audiences.

Yeah this is a great anime/manga, need to buy the rest of the manga, but I hate that Viz fails at getting the second boxset out there.

I thought this anime was cool, I was gonna buy it at a store when I first saw it. But when I went to look for it a second time, it was already gone. Its a shame that there was only one box-set released...it would be cool if it got licensed again.
