I always appreciate ammo test in the various self defense caliber. Thanks. What I would love to see also is some tests really simulating a center of mass shot. Layer of clothing, A layer of bone/material to simulate the rib cage, a foot (approx) of gelatin and another layer of bone for back of ribcage to see expansion/penetration though ribs and soft tissue. I seems to me that strictly gelatin would simulate only passing between ribs both front and back. Just thoughts.
Why are people talking crap!!! This is one of the best ammo testing guy I found on youtube!!! These videos are just for referince and to give a "idea" of how the ammo performs!! Thanks for all the great test, it helps me pick out a defence round to buy when I get a new gun. Keep up the good work and if there is anything I can do to help let me know.

thx for the epic fail. i learned not to get hallow point in the anemic .380 caliber. unless maybe it is a thin soft copper jacket. i wonder why remington used brass?
again, i hear a 380 doesnt make the cut for a solid def round do to lack of penetration. Your tests show theyre out penetrating the 9mm. So does this make a 380 an opimal round above 9mm? Thx
@MrAzcabowabo no, the over-penetration from the 380 was a fluke because the bullet didn't mushroom. imagine trying to throw a basebal bat vs umbrella through water, which do you think will stop first?
@crazydriver1978 thx. while i do understand that brass is harder than copper, i dont understand why remington used brass vs copper jacket for hallow point. can you do a review on copper jacket hallowpoint?, thx again
Well right now on Tru TV the Andrew Wirth Bar fight murder of two other patrons,

Don't underestimate the 380 I have two. The Bersa Thunder 380 and S&W Body guard 380 light for EDC and capable of doing what is needed in self defense. The Safety on The Bersa sucks, way to hard, actually impossible at times. Warrantee work needed?
Hey tnoutdoors9, I know it is a lot of work to set up the gelatin. Why not, in instances like this, when you have essentially a recognized fmj-like passthru, fire another one into the block just to see if that one expands? You shouldnt have to worry about the block being inconsistent if all the first bullet did was pass through, IMHO. Thanks again!
Always the possibility of a second shot crossing through the original bullet path. To remind me of this, I have that scene from Ghostbusters running through my mind......"do not cross the streams".
I really enjoy your demonstrations of differing rounds and cablers, thank you!
I wanted to mention the DOJ Handgun Wounding Factors and Effectiveness paper (available free online) that mentions that the most important factor of a round is penetration, and that typically, only 60 to 70% of hollow point rounds expand in tests.
A 2nd test of Golden Saber .380 rounds would be interesting to see if the round did indeed expand.
Thanks for the video. One thought, disguised as two questions: do you think the denim itself could have caused the failure? If there had been no denim, would it have expanded?
Who knows. I still think the velocity to weight factor caused the problem, although the denim didn't help matters. It may or may not have done the same thing with only a cotton shirt. Even if it did expand without denim, that means I would have to ask my attacker to disrobe before I fired a shot.
I still have more to test and to this point, August 2011, nothing has impressed me. There do seem to be some consistencies with loads generally staying in the 10 to 11 inch range for penetration. Expansion is what it is for the weight and diamter of the bullet, given these velocities. Sooner or later I'll try some FMJ in the block, although I cannot advocate that anyone carry FMJ for self defense, in any caliber.
@tnoutdoors9 Despite maybe 100 years of misinformation. From the Gun mags etc. I have read right now, from Police Autopsies on dead bad guys. The Pathologists find no difference in the dead guy JHP and FMJ

Perfect test. However, that was still good penetration. but that hollow point activation was an epic fail. I wonder if this bullet was designed more for hunting than self defense? It seems the denim clogging the hollow-point cavity is a key point. I have this same load in my .380 and I have also shot it into gel. In my case, I was NOT performing any calibrated test, no denim or anything like that, just shot into bare gel. It did expand in that case, so it does have enough velocity to expand under some (easy) conditions. This was .380 102 grain Remington Golden Sabre out of a Ruger LCP.

I truely enjoy watching your videos. I'm very new and leaning a lot. I started off by trying to learn more of my dads rifles & shotgus which I inherited,

I have been paying attention to a lot of .380 tests lately due to the fact that I am considering replacing my 9mm Rohrbaugh with a .380 SIG P238 for my deep concealment pistol. I found this test very interesting. I think I would stay in a 90gr weight range.
Disappointing. Is it that Golden Saber is an older design ? If it's not non expansion in this case, it's core-jacket separation in the other calibers. Pretty sad that this is supposed to be Remington's flagship brand
As always a great review but DUDE!!! I have this in my TCP738... I am so disappointed right now. But like I said in response to another poster, Maybe a more realistic test would be with t-shirt, leather jacket and hoodie material layers instead of denim. Just a thought. But thanks for the great quality reviews.
Gee, this test surprised me since there was no expansion. I was really expecting some bullet expansion and the for the bullet to not travel that far. Great ballistics test.
I will hunt coyote every once in a while, but I'm finding less time for that activity. I have so many deer in the yard, it would not be a challenge to hunt them. I do feed the deer with a steady diet of corn, minerals, etc. so that hunters down the road a mile or so have some healthy targets from which to choose. Alot of my neighbors hunt for food; they depend on it every year.
Somebody needs to fill the hollow point cavity with RTV silicone, I think it would solve the hollow point clogging with denim and might even get some expansion.
@CleverEditing If you want him to test .22 mag out of a handgun it doesn't have to be a PMR 30. Those are very hard to find and there are cheaper options out there.
I really don't have any plans to test .22 mag. Before I get asked again, no plans to test .25 or .32. However, I'm leaning more and more toward getting a .22 LR handgun and testing everything out there using this same format, including solids. I have been so infatuated with .22's lately that I'm eating them in my cereal.
@tnoutdoors9 Walther P -22 works just fine, looks good, and ammo cheap also. Have look at one
I really like the Bersa guns have a 40 and the 380. I watched many 380 videos on you tube, and not all 380 have a hard impossible decocker safety, from what I see them pushing it off safety.
The Bersa 40 safety works just fine. The Beretta PX 4 Sub compact is smooth as silk.
I have three Glocks but now they are orphans since the Bersa and Beretta Walther. To many guns I only take 4 at a time to range

@ :50 mark you make the argument for more penetration for the .380 then again @1:25 hoping for better penetration. Now at the end(3:48) you disregard you opening statements and the bullet when you got your " best" penetration to date, for not having enough expansion. I am not trying to be a jerk and VERY sorry if I come across as such! I'm just confused and might not be the only 1.
I am not trying to "troll" you, so If this offends in any way let me know and I will pull it ASAP. Thank you!
@tnoutdoors9 Sir, thank you very much for taking the time for the response it is a huge help. I am very impressed wit the effort you put into your channel and i really did not mean to offend. I was just being a dumbass(read in need of coffee) and was confused by the results. Thanks again!
@tnoutdoors9 You said in your first point that you prefer penetration vs. expansion. i was curious because i have been watching a lot of ballistics test videos and reviews to pick a preferred home defense / ccw round and i recently viewed a test of a Grizzly Extreme round, and it had by far the most expansion out of any bullet that i have ever seen, so my question is. Do you think that extreme expansion and somewhat poor penetration is as good as good penetration and somewhat poor expansion?
Poor expansion and penetration might stop a threat. Good expansion put poor penetration may stop a threat, and vice versa. The Grizzly Extreme, based on my readings, does seem to offer great expansion. Does that mean it's the end-all bullet? If it was, then all the ammo makers would be replicating that formula. I like my chances of stopping a threat faster, as in reaching vital systems/organs with a bullet that penetrates.
@tnoutdoors9 i figure that if the bullet penetrates into center mass a few to several inches with a wound cavity nearly twice as large as any other bullet it would do the job for sure and that vital organs aren't very deep to begin with. i dont know what 2 water jugs equates to in ballistic gelatin but thats how far i saw a 45acp penetrate in a water jug expansion test. thanks for the quick feedback, and the continuous good videos.
These are my first ever experiences with the .380, shooting, testing, etc. I do understand where, due to availability, restrictions, handgun size, recoil, etc. why it is the first or only choice for some folks. I'm trying to detail what few facts I can present and then viewers have to make a choice. So far, I have yet to be overwhelmingly impressed with any aspect of .380 test results that motivates me to use for personal defence, but I need to be objective.
Well at least you had some jugs back there to stop it. Nice video man and just wanted to say thank you for your effort in these ammo test vids. I know it isn't exactly a science lab, but I'm sure your viewers do appreciate the data that you show on here. Once again, much appreciated brother.
I got a little .380 last Christmas and always have it on me. Thank you for taking the time to do these, you may be saving someones life with this information.
I tend to load my Keltec P3at with FMJ bullets (I do have a box of DPX corbons for it, too). The reason for FMJ is penetration. These little pocket guns are for 10 yds. and closer gunfights. They are better than nothing guns. I want a bullet that will go through a leather coat, shirt, skin, rib, etc... Practice with an 8 in. paper plate from 3yds to 10 yds. Better yet buy a small 9mm (like the PF9) and forget about .380.
In my opinion, your ammo test vids are far and away the best on Youtube. Thanks for the honest and not over-complicated videos. We really appreciate it.
Now I know not to put this junk in my lil pocket .380!!! Luckily the weather starting to cool off a bit so I can start carrying my .45 more instead of leaving it in the truck!
I wonder if you would be better off using a flat nosed sharp shouldered hard cast bullet with a .380 (if there is such an animal) and go for the penetration over expansion. If expansion is hit or miss might as well go with the constant, or a 9mm .40 or a .45 :-)
Once again, a 9mm bullet design unsuccessfully applied to .380 ACP. Fact of the matter is, .380 just doesn't move as fast as 9x19mm - some manufacturers get it, some don't, and Remington is apparently one of the latter.
Thanks for another great test. Hopefully you will get around to sampling the DPX in .380. I know it's pricey, but it seems to perform well in other tests I have seen. If you are going to stake your life on a marginal caliber, you better get a bullet that will do its job as advertised.
Not very impressive at all. The velocity differences is also a reason for concern. A 5% deviation in velocity is not great news for quality control. Thanks for the test.
I have waited a long time for him to test this one. I was super excited when I saw the video but feared these results. I have to say though if deep penetration is a plus then this ammo deserves some credit. I am amazed that it went all the way through the block. The critics of the 380 would never believe it.
Very disappointing. I didn't have higher expectations necessarily, but i did have higher hopes. This is one of the more reasonably priced bullets for reloading a "self-defense" load. But with that performance... I don't know. I wanted to try them for reloading the 9mm, but this makes me double think it.. (although on the 9mm test in the wet-pack it did respectably..) I just don't know yet.. Might have to bite the bullet and try them.. (Just the bullets that is)
Been watching these for a while now. The test for penetration on soft tissue is great, but one wonders about bone? Against a human rib cage, for example. Perhaps a second shot with a couple of spare ribs (No! not yours - before someone asks!) behind the denim,
awesome video! Have you thought about using a bone plate between the denim and ballistic gel? Considering the rib cage covers anywhere from 55-80% of the vital organs in the chest depending on direction, it would be interesting to see what results you would get. I've seen a pdf of a test where all but one brand of ammo failed to open (Even the hornady ammo with the plastic tips). Interestingly the only ammo that did open had a lighter bullet than the rest.
Sweet, tnoutdoors9 I'm always happy to see a sim media test with a load I have jug tested,(@ghillisniper300 channel) it makes my think there is validity there in the milk jugs. I got the same results with denim and had failure to expand and jacket separation in bare jugs on the ones that did expand, alot of people recommend using flat nose fmj's in 380, 19.5" penetration! That seems like negligence imo!
Very disappointing. I have a box myself and will never use it in my concealed carry weapon. Hornady critical defense is the way to go. Great job keep up the awesome videos.
I noticed the cuts in the top of the bullet. I know the purpose of these, and understand the general design. I wondered that since the cuts in the jacket are spiraled, and spiraled in the opposite direction of the rifling of your pistol, will they expand? your pistol has a right hand twist, so will it never expand? does it need to be left hand twist? To me it seems like setting up a circular saw, with the saw blade backwards. Thanks
That is just another reason why I carry Speer Gold Dot, never any issues and always performs very well, I have them loaded in both of my .357 Magnums, my Ruger LCP, my Glock 19, my S&W 4006 in .40 and my hand cannon Springfield XD45 Sub Compact 5" Tactical. No other carry round or personal protection will be loaded in my weapons but Speer Gold Dot
May have well been an FMJ huh? Makes me wonder if the thing would open up on anything- wet newspaper, gel without any denim, flesh, etc. Great video, I can tell you went through a lot of work to make this one.
why dont you use just one layer of denum for testing, it seems it would be more realistic say a leg shot, it would probably expand with only one layer of denum
@jamesjr934 ya know that is a REALLY good point. Or maybe even one layer of t-shirt and another layer of hoodie material or even leather jacket material. 4 layers of denim from the torso up really isnt practical in 2011 lol. And this REALLY has me wondering b/c I carry this stuff in my TCP 738!!! Im lookin at it at this second wondering if I should unload it asap
@fomoco13 I think the whole point of that standard is in the mentality that if it goes through 4 layers of denum then you know without much doubt that the round will preform when needed against what ever the attacker may be wearing, except for body armor of course...
.380 is such a consistently poor performing load - i can't understand why anyone would choose it for self defense. better to go with 38 special or better yet 9mm. if gun size is a concern, choose a kahr pm9.
Yes, good catch. Everyone realizes we are not talking about the tight control specs you can get from reloading at home, but it's interesting to track which ammo makers have the widest deviation in their loads. I hope it is helpful that I not only post the advertised and average FPS, but my high and low marks.
@tnoutdoors9 It is helpful. It seems this particular batch of ammo was not to the standards we expect from Remington's Golden Saber line-up. Maybe it was just some quality control issues. I hope at least that is the case.
Wow. I'd have to agree about the weight for the caliber. I was very surprised to see it pass through the sim media. Still though, another terrific and very informative vid. Keep it up!
Bleah! No expansion. A very expensive FMJ result. Winchester PDX1 is much better.

@revgotchrist If you want to protect your life in a unanticipated bad guy attack. Carry FMJ 380, or even 9MM. FMJ.
Why? 380 JHP can be as shallow as 7 inches in JHP. And JHP in 9MM is about 13 inches in JHP
The FBI standards are 12 to 18 inches are needed. FMJ in 380 and 9MM is over 20 inches with FMJ.
All the Bull shit about hitting a by stander from over penetration has never happened.
In summary a FMJ may save your life. Even 40 and 45 JHP are only 13 inches deep. Common sense is FMJ.

Somebody needs to fill the hollow point cavity with RTV silicone, I think it would solve the hollow point clogging with denim and might even get some expansion.

hey can you buy a kel tec pmr 30 and then buy some
hornady critical defense .22 mag
CleverEditing 6 months ago
@CleverEditing If you want him to test .22 mag out of a handgun it doesn't have to be a PMR 30. Those are very hard to find and there are cheaper options out there.

the pmr is a cheap gun($350.00)

@CleverEditing

To many guns I only take 4 at a time to range

crazydriver1978 3 months ago
@ :50 mark you make the argument for more penetration for the .380 then again @1:25 hoping for better penetration. Now at the end(3:48) you disregard you opening statements and the bullet when you got your " best" penetration to date, for not having enough expansion. I am not trying to be a jerk and VERY sorry if I come across as such! I'm just confused and might not be the only 1.
I am not trying to "troll" you, so If this offends in any way let me know and I will pull it ASAP. Thank you!
LMarshall32 6 months ago
@LMarshall32
Your question is fine, so let me be very clear.
1 - I prefer optimum penetration vs. expansion; an acceptable balance of both is the goal of the ammo maker.
2 - I expected deeper penetration due to a heavier bullet.
3 - A non-expanding JHP is generally considered a failure.
4 - I look for an acceptable window of performance based on professional testing and expected results.
5 - The .380 SO FAR has not fit in that window for my preferences.
tnoutdoors9 6 months ago
@tnoutdoors9 Sir, thank you very much for taking the time for the response it is a huge help. I am very impressed wit the effort you put into your channel and i really did not mean to offend. I was just being a dumbass(read in need of coffee) and was confused by the results. Thanks again!
LMarshall32 6 months ago
@tnoutdoors9 You said in your first point that you prefer penetration vs. expansion. i was curious because i have been watching a lot of ballistics test videos and reviews to pick a preferred home defense / ccw round and i recently viewed a test of a Grizzly Extreme round, and it had by far the most expansion out of any bullet that i have ever seen, so my question is. Do you think that extreme expansion and somewhat poor penetration is as good as good penetration and somewhat poor expansion?
Rubengt303 6 months ago
@Rubengt303
I like my chances of stopping a threat faster, as in reaching vital systems/organs with a bullet that penetrates.
tnoutdoors9 6 months ago
@tnoutdoors9 i figure that if the bullet penetrates into center mass a few to several inches with a wound cavity nearly twice as large as any other bullet it would do the job for sure and that vital organs aren't very deep to begin with. i dont know what 2 water jugs equates to in ballistic gelatin but thats how far i saw a 45acp penetrate in a water jug expansion test. thanks for the quick feedback, and the continuous good videos.

lisolangka 6 months ago
@lisolangka

I wonder if you would be better off using a flat nosed sharp shouldered hard cast bullet with a .380 (if there is such an animal) and go for the penetration over expansion. If expansion is hit or miss might as well go with the constant, or a 9mm .40 or a .45 :-)

dills2403 6 months ago
Once again, a 9mm bullet design unsuccessfully applied to .380 ACP. Fact of the matter is, .380 just doesn't move as fast as 9x19mm - some manufacturers get it, some don't, and Remington is apparently one of the latter.
darkwriter77 6 months ago
Thanks for another great test. Hopefully you will get around to sampling the DPX in .380. I know it's pricey, but it seems to perform well in other tests I have seen. If you are going to stake your life on a marginal caliber, you better get a bullet that will do its job as advertised.
sufferas1 6 months ago
Not very impressive at all. The velocity differences is also a reason for concern. A 5% deviation in velocity is not great news for quality control. Thanks for the test.
rifleslol 6 months ago
I have waited a long time for him to test this one. I was super excited when I saw the video but feared these results. I have to say though if deep penetration is a plus then this ammo deserves some credit. I am amazed that it went all the way through the block. The critics of the 380 would never believe it.
BioHazardMatthew 6 months ago
yehhh in brazil the .380 is a once caliber we can have for home defence the golden saber is exlent
thiagocessna 6 months ago
Very disappointing. I didn't have higher expectations necessarily, but i did have higher hopes. This is one of the more reasonably priced bullets for reloading a "self-defense" load. But with that performance... I don't know. I wanted to try them for reloading the 9mm, but this makes me double think it.. (although on the 9mm test in the wet-pack it did respectably..) I just don't know yet.. Might have to bite the bullet and try them.. (Just the bullets that is)
YamahaWR200 6 months ago
I believe the best round for the 380 is the Corbon DPX.
rhddrifter86 6 months ago
Been watching these for a while now. The test for penetration on soft tissue is great, but one wonders about bone? Against a human rib cage, for example. Perhaps a second shot with a couple of spare ribs (No! not yours - before someone asks!) behind the denim,
leighrate 6 months ago
Thanks for another very informative vid! I always look forward to these.
mcekim2 6 months ago
awesome video!

Thanks

That is just another reason why I carry Speer Gold Dot, never any issues and always performs very well, I have them loaded in both of my .357 Magnums, my Ruger LCP, my Glock 19, my S&W 4006 in .40 and my hand cannon Springfield XD45 Sub Compact 5" Tactical. why dont you use just one layer of denum for testing, it seems it would be more realistic say a leg shot, it would probably expand with only one layer of denum
fomoco13 6 months ago
@fomoco13 yeah but im pretty sure the like Federal standard for testing is 4 layers so thats why he does four as well
Mo7Vsta 6 months ago
@fomoco13
4 layers is an IWBA standard, plus, I don't aim for the leg. :-)
tnoutdoors9 6 months ago 26
@tnoutdoors9 In that case maybe one layer of t-shirt cloth would be more realistic, since not many people wear denim on their upper body?
jamesjr934 6 months ago
@jamesjr934 ya know that is a REALLY good point. Or maybe even one layer of t-shirt and another layer of hoodie material or even leather jacket material. 4 layers of denim from the torso up really isnt practical in 2011 lol. And this REALLY has me wondering b/c I carry this stuff in my TCP 738!!! Im lookin at it at this second wondering if I should unload it asap
ThatDudeSirraj 6 months ago
@fomoco13 I think the whole point of that standard is in the mentality that if it goes through 4 layers of denum then you know without much doubt that the round will preform when needed against what ever the attacker may be wearing, except for body armor of course...

.380 is such a consistently poor performing load - i can't understand why anyone would choose it for self defense. better to go with 38 special or better yet 9mm. if gun size is a concern, choose a kahr pm9.

darbycrash55 6 months ago
does the variation in velocity (951 fps to 850 fps) shown at 1:44 give a cause for concern?
heyerstandards 6 months ago 2
@heyerstandards
Yes, good catch. Everyone realizes we are not talking about the tight control specs you can get from reloading at home, but it's interesting to track which ammo makers have the widest deviation in their loads. I hope it is helpful that I not only post the advertised and average FPS, but my high and low marks.
tnoutdoors9 6 months ago 7
@tnoutdoors9 It is helpful. It seems this particular batch of ammo was not to the standards we expect from Remington's Golden Saber line-up. Maybe it was just some quality control issues. I hope at least that is the case.
