I don't really believe democracy would come to China in a near future. But, as the world financial system has very big chances of collapsing in the next 2-3 years, there's even more chance to a new global economy, like a social market economy that happens in Germany since 1948. So, there would be a greater chance for democracy in China.

I don't think they saw the cultural revolution was coming, i don't think anyone did. When the PRC was first established in 1949, all the leaders were really trying to help the people, but then as Mao got old, he went kinda crazy.

The economy is a kind of capitalism, but far from 21st century capitalism. Workers in China are like americans in the 20's, 30's, 40's.
But the government and the way the country works is still communism.
But parties like this are typically communist. Just look at the old USSR, it worked on the same way.

@maritimezhang There's no doubt China has completely changed in the past 30 years, mainly from 2001 when China entered the WTO until now.
I don't really believe democracy would come to China in a near future. But, as the world financial system has very big chances of collapsing in the next 2-3 years, there's even more chance to a new global economy, like a social market economy that happens in Germany since 1948. So, there would be a greater chance for democracy in China.

@M1Astrays Well I live in Canada and I work at a factory that employs around 80% Chinese workers, and among them are MANY people with engineering degrees, PHDs ect... doing jobs that anyone could do after a few hours training. There must be something seriously wrong with China if these people are willing to do this.

It was shortly after the Pro-Democracy Movement in China that students in Taiwan seized on the momentum. So in sum, people in Taiwan owe China, specifically the Chinese students who were killed, the prosperity, political stability and democracy they enjoy today! And frankly Taiwan should acknowledge that.

the problem with Taiwan is that it's very status as a nation is always in question... it goes beyond nationalism and also into blood ties and what it means to be "chinese".
my issue with western democracy activists is not that they are trying to spread democracy, but that they need to understand what is the most effective way of doing it that is sensitive to the local cultural contexts as opposed to simply telling them what to do.

As an American I will tell you this much: We were the first people to commit Holocaust in the world by wholesale murdering the entire Indian population by shipping them to 'designated camps', what would be today's Auswitz, Dachau, etc. We were also the first to use biological warfare, i.e., small pox, in attempt to wipe out entire Indian tribes by giving them infected blankets and other diseases on purpose. Personally I think a multi-party system would be beneficial to China... but as I said do I think the government is ready for it? I don't think so, not as long as democracy is also framed as an "import".
The thing is, as much misgivings the Chinese people have about their government, they will unite whenever they percieve an external party is telling them what they ought to do. This is why dialouge is a lot more effective then constantly yelling at them that they suck.

To the credit of the Chinese government, they are great pragmatists when it come to national survival. Can we really call the current China a communist state? In name only prehaps but they have pretty much embraced all the trappings of captialism.
The thing with China now is not communism, they got sick and tired of it after the cultural revolution... the issue now is one-party rule and how to transit from that.

China run its so called 'Communist' party in a matter of fact more than 35% of the party are capitalist. Regardless above all, since 1970 to date China has become a better capitalist than their US counterparts. Unless you would prefer Russia or North Korea. All countries political systems have their own unique degree of level and complexity.

And no, I am not jealous. I live in a country that doesn't wage war and even though I served in the Finnish Air Force, I'd still rather keep it that way. In addition I get free health care, free education (6 languages so far) and other benefits. However by this I don't mean that the American system would be worse in my opinion. They are two completely different systems and as I've grown in a Nordic country I prefer the system we have and the fact that we are not engaged in a war.
