There's a guy who keeps spamming the comments under different usernames saying that it doesn't matter that the government burned the books because there is an "unredacted" copy available somewhere online. I've investigated this claim and I've only been able to find the first eight pages of unredacted information online. It was in a NYT story talking about how ridiculous it was for the government to burn the books.

Perhaps in this instance we DO need government intervention: Anyone who attempts to abridge or restrict anybody’s Bill of Rights guarantees MUST be prosecuted by the federal government without exception. It's a disgrace. Read the whole description. You'd be surprised to read the NYT article referenced in this video's description. They also thought the book burning was absurd.
If the information is correct, the book was authorized by the military prior to publication. If that is the case, then there was no National Security issue. How then is it's removal from circulation justified?

I checked and found this story to be accurate. The books ordered to be burned were both the first printing and the books printed for distribution at book signings when it was first released.
The excuse that "State Secrets" was the reason for destroying the books is just a cover to prevent the embarrassment to the Clinton Administrations failures in fighting terrorism.

That being said, every Borders within 50 miles of my house shows the book being out of stock.....
And I just double checked with a few of my local Barnes & Noble. They do have them in stock and at least one of the stores has a copy on hold for me.... So... Not sure that this story is accurate.
@melcene1 The one that Barnes and Noble has is the redacted version. If you open the book, you will see a note from the publisher explaining the fact that it is a redacted copy:
"Based on Department of Defense security concerns, sections of Operation Dark Heart have been redacted in the published edition."
The Nook version from Barnes and Noble is also redacted.
@melcene1 You should ask the bookseller to open the book for you and see if there are lots of blacked out passages. I'd be interested to know if B&N got their hands on a non-redacted copy but I highly doubt it.

That is what is so offensive here. It is an affront to free speech. On a side note, the man who burned the Qur'an did not go to jail, although he did get fired from his job. The material that the DIA subsequently objected to (after publication of the book) was open source information, much of which could be found in the dictionary or on Wikipedia.

They are composting them because they were not redacted. You can still buy the book but many parts are redacted or have have been changes. If someone with access to this info decides to step out and release this info to the world, then yes they should be stopped and that information suspended from being distributed. @BlindHarp The book had gone through two separate army reviews and was published.The type of information that the Obama administration objected to in the published version were things like hyphens, definitions that could be found in a dictionary, and various other publicly available information. It's a disgrace. Read the whole description. You'd be surprised to read the NYT article referenced in this video's description. They also thought the book burning was absurd.

It had also passed two separate army reviews before being published. Then it was burned for purely political reasons.
Nonetheless, I am against book burning of any kind in this country and it is a good point to say that the government did this in another case.

I checked and found this story to be accurate. The books ordered to be burned were both the first printing and the books printed for distribution at book signings when it was first released.
The excuse that "State Secrets" was the reason for destroying the books is just a cover to prevent the embarrassment to the Clinton Administrations failures in fighting terrorism.

@melcene1 The one that Barnes and Noble has is the redacted version. If you open the book, you will see a note from the publisher explaining the fact that it is a redacted copy:
"Based on Department of Defense security concerns, sections of Operation Dark Heart have been redacted in the published edition."
The Nook version from Barnes and Noble is also redacted.

That is what is so offensive here. It is an affront to free speech. On a side note, the man who burned the Qur'an did not go to jail, although he did get fired from his job. We do still have some free speech left, albeit not enough.

It is very obvious that had this been done under Bush (if he ordered it or not), it would already be all over every paper, magazine and newscast in the nation. The material that the DIA subsequently objected to (after publication of the book) was open source information, much of which could be found in the dictionary or on Wikipedia.
A New York Times article entitled "Secrets in Plain Sight" actually explains the absurdity of this pretty well.
