I want this model but so far all of my searching has left me empty handed. If anyone knows where I can purchase the S&W 22 model 617 please let me know. Thankyou
I'm considering getting one, but have come across reviews and problems with the cylinder locking up after just a few rounds, does anybody have one that can share some insight?
I have one of these that's blued with an aluminum cylinder. I love it, I was able to shoot a turkey on the run, and not 5 minutes later I out did myself by shooting one out of the air.
I want one of these cause it feels just like my 686. Great gun that you can shoot on the cheap...and will last forever. Like every S&W I own, well worth the bucks.
im looking for a .22 lr revolver much like this one but i would like to spend under $300(USD), but i would spend up to $300. i know that the older looking revolvers like the "scout" tend to run alittle cheaper but i like this design and the fact that the cylnders come out for the use of speed loaders. so if anybody wouldnt mind giving me some advice i would greatly appreicate it! THANK YOU!
@TheGreatMrDrew If you travel to your local cabela's you can get an 8 shot .22 revolver with a wood grip, and a black barrel and cylinder thats new for 180 USD
for what this is it's way to expensive,, who'd pay almost a thousand bucks for a oversized .22 lr? it seriously it has the frame and weight of a .357 or even a .44 mag
Why is the 617 so Expensive? It is just a .22 LR and It costs more than some of the real guns like a .357 SP-101 or any of those 7 shot .357 Taurus revolvers. Even the Browning Buckmark is half the price of this 617.
@microminiskirt That model is almost identical to the 357 that S&W makes except for the smaller bore and 10 round cylinder. The machining, amount of craftsmanship, and amount of steel are all the same as the 686 model .357 which costs about the same. The hammer, barrel, frame, trigger, grip, sights, and finish work is the same as a .357 model. Being that a .22LR is cheap doesn't mean that the stainless steel is cheaper if its going on a .22LR. S&W is the Cadillac of revolvers, so you pay more.
I don't know why people use .22lr in pistols, I mean you'll get the same power with .22 shorts out of that short a barrel, cause in a pistol the .22lr just wastes about half the powder as the bullet leaves the barrel beofre it's all burnt, and it makes it alot loudeer, a .22 short in the same gun and bullet weight will go almost the same speed with about half the noise cause of the signifigantly smaller ammount of powder being wasted
I bought a 617 for my son about 5 years ago. I looked high and low for a speedloader but nothing was available back then. I'm glad I stumbled onto this video and your information on the loaders. One thing Id like to say to those who cant understand the cost of this .22. Pick one up and shoot it. You'll certainly understand then. Its the best .22 revolver Ive ever seen, held or shot. For those who are clamoring for a .22 magnum, just buy a 357 44 if thats what you want. .22 is cheap fun.
@ballygeale1 .22 LR and .22 Magnum are not the same calibre. They share a common diameter size but with a *very* different case length with a correspondent extra powder charge. Not only is physically impossible to fit a .22 Magnum on a .22 LR cylinder, and also the extra charge is a security hazard. Never use other ammunition on a weapon then the one listed by the manufacturer. Safety first.
@pereiramateus :I'm starting to learn about ammunition please I don't really understand the last sentence in your statement, which reference using other ammunition on a weapon then the one listed by the MFG. Thank you.
@ballygeale1 . .22 and 22 magnum are a different round.. I suggest you do your homework on firearms before actually using one. Join a pistol club, learn about firearms, you cant just pick one up like on the movies, you will either kill someone or yourself.

I tried HSK but no luck. OR I may look at the S&W model 63 8 round capacity - any thoughts on both of these models?? Thank You. Most Sincerely, and Respectfully. JAMES.
Hi. Would you have any idea about how many rounds you have put thru her? Also, did you notice any difference when "breaking" her in? Just curious. I just purchased a Ruger single Six .22 LR - haven't shot her yet but I just love her. thanks. sincerely, JAMES.
i have a smith and wesson 647 17hmr with a 8 3/8 barrel very rare gun i only payed $500 bucks and its mint like new i love it and i have a s&w 44 mag as well and the 17hmr is built just as well as the 44 mag that why thay are the same price pretty much
... maybe because the materials, construction and finishing is pretty much the same, only the caliber varies. By no means the .617 is a "cheap an light" revolver "sub version" of the high caliber model. It's a (very) sturdy one for this manufacturer.
realy good gun, absolute!!!
