I tried this with one of those horrible dead dried out puffers that they sell as souvenirs in some places. and I think it had a panic attack. Pufferfish are very smart, they have some Long Term Memory. My puffer responds to certain plastic and paper cups since I bring its shrimp in one and let the shrimp defrost in RO/DI water to remove phosphates and stuff that is added to shrimp as preservative.

When the pufferfish sees these cups it goes crazy attacking the glass sometimes.

I have a lot of biological filters (live rock and live sand, with bioballs in the sump) This video was taken before I got a small protein skimmer which REALLY helped with the nitrates and nitrites (helping to keep the green down to a minimum) Since I don't have a reef tank, I can't give too much advice, but bio filtration and lots of water changes should help.

Puffers can poison you if you eat them. They can also poison the other fish if they die in the tank and their toxins are released. I have had no trouble with mine. I can actually pet the top of the fish without her puffing up or poisoning me.

yes u need to do more freaquient water changes b/c the bacteria only cleans the ammonia(NH3/ NH+4) and nitrite or (NO_2) while the one toxin from the fish waste that the bacteria doesnt clean is Nitrate(NO_3) and if u dont do regular water changes the Nitrate will build up and give the green algea ampel amount of food to live off of. also if u have natural light meaning the sun hiting the aquarium it will booste algea growth aswell. how often do u change the water if u dont mind me askin.

Saltwater tank shouldn't require as many water changes as freshwater..... Freshwater is weekly, saltwater is more like monthly. It sounds like you guys are giving advice based on a freshwater tank and a puffer fish shouldn't be in fresh water. They can survive in freshwater but they don't live as long.

If he's in a saltwater tank and it's dirty, it may be overfeeding and overpopulation. The "1 gallon per inch of fish" rule is more like 5 gal per inch of fish in saltwater.

*edit* sorry, their ARE freshwater/brackish puffer fish, but Penny doesn't look like any of the species with which I am familiar, so I assumed he was salt water. But I could easily be wrong.

Regardless, ALL puffer fish are messy. WAY more messy than normal fish. Try over-filtration; that is, get a filter that is rated for a much larger tank that the tank you actually have. Buy bio-balls for your filter. Some puffer owners do %50 water changes weekly. If all else fails, He needs a bigger tank.

If the problem is algae and not poopy water, make sure he's not near a window, and don't leave the tank light on too long. Both promote algae.

The wipes suggested are good but the pole you stick them on is hard to use. Get one of the magnets, those are the best for glass cleaning.

algae eaters and snails are great but puffers tend to be aggressive so careful with new tank mates. Also, scoop out any uneaten food 30 minutes after feeding.

I have one of these magnets.. they are really cool. If Dwarfthemike is talking about the same thing I have.. its a really powerful magnet. You keep one half on the outside of the tank and half on the inside. You can clean the tank by moving the magnet around on the outside (which moves the one against the inside of the tank) I recommend having some kind of a gentle scrubber pad to put the magnet in so it does not scratch your tank, and I wrap the outside one in a paper towel to not scratch.

yea.. I used to have lots of tank cleaners.. and I have tried buying new ones, but they don't last long. All my fish are agressive so they all think the cleaners are food. The last ones I bought were a couple of really big snails and crabs, in the hope that their size would protect them. This has worked, but they hide ALL the time. I see them every now and again when I am cleaning the tank. I guess they are doing their work cleaning their hiding spots.

Frequent water changes are good for the salt water tank. I do 10% weekly, it just keeps the water nice, and especially now, in the summer, the water evaporates fast, so its important to do reverse osmosis freshwater changes too. It also looks like I am getting the green under control. I think I was feeding them too much. They are just SO cute when they eat.
