Bernstein said in an interview when he worked with the Vienna Phil at first they didn't quite captured the character of the beginning so he told them it should sound like the aufmarsch of the third Reich and than they got it. I was at the concert. every time I hear this beginning I get goosebumps...
@sabibu I've felt for a long time that some of Mahler's movements (the more rhythmic ones especially) seem like they could be satires on the larger-than-life motives of Germanness cultivated by the Nazis a few decades later.
The timpani miss low end, which is a shame because Bernstein is my favourite Mahler conductor and it kinda ruins the awesomeness of the timpani in this movement.
Fantastic...I say bring back communism every five years for one year to have such beautiful music. This video shows that location, location, location plus people matter. Thaks for your post...I need to buy this DVD. Where can I buy? can oyu post the UPC code or if Amazon, ASIN#. Thanks a bunch...You go Google with oyu big win...you are no longer evil for one week...
@jhh0237l Why do you need communism? You lost me here... Mahler died before the revolution in Russia and Mahler wasn't Russian, he was Austrian... and influenced the 2nd Viennese School...
That IS a great beard.

I don't always listen to symphonies, but when I do, I prefer Mahler.

Wonderful performance. However, I wish they could put the entire Chicago Symphony/Haitink performance online.

Mahler would not have conducted the opening march at this speed. It would have been slightly slower.

Bernstein looks like a mix of Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, and Obi-Wan Kenobi in this.

Are you sure it's Bernstein? He looks much like Kurt Masur. (try Wikipedia).
