  • magic

  • just goes to prove when there is a song that has soul anyone and everyone can relate. we need more soul nowadays

  • Like if you started liking Warren Haynes after hearing him on DMB's Central Park album

  • right on. this is why we're here...to get the take of one musician on another's art. the styles are immaterial. the interpretation is inspiring, and reminds us that lots of songs are great in and of themselves.

thanks for playing this for us warren...and you dead guys too.

many thanks from a deadhead since 1977.

  • hardest-working man in music....

  • I was at this show, and will never forget the moment. It was so hilariously divisive...crowd members either loved it (or asked what it was and at least appreciated it) or hated that their Dead was playing Metallica. Phil and Warren had big smiles on their faces, enjoying tweaking the deadheads.

  • I am not sure if you all know this but Metallica listens to Gov't Mule on the tour bus. Go search old issues of guitar world. James was in awe of being in the room with Warren and Woody. RIP Woddy, GOD loves you and we miss you.

  • @Hay3sGray I have that issue of Guitarworld. Metallica's bass player wanted to play for the Mule after Woody passed away.

  • dont do it!

  • 15 people just don't understand what good music is...

  • Never heard of him before but after watching some vids on youtube I'm getting a ticket for his coming show in LA !!

  • @F3FisGoodforYou...He's the man. when he's not playing in his own bands, he constantly pops up in other shows, from Coheed and Cambria to Blues Traveler, probably the most diverse musician i've seen. Reminds me of Duane Allman, loves to play and plays whenever he can, regardless of venue or crowd.

  • That was bad as hell. I like Warrens version better.

    It's very honest.

  • This is great I would have died if I was at this show and got to witness this live

  • OUTSTANDING! i love a good cover. nice to hear another artists interpretation...it always adds to the greatness of the original.

metallica has proved to be a lasting force in modern music and warren is a master of the trade. the collision of the two is a fine result.

i think warren may be the hardest working man in music today...he shows up frikkin everywhere

  • Play it Warren...

  • this is phil and friends. the dead only played dead tunes. besides a rare allman brothers tune here and there

  • @randyc420

08/13/04 Jones Beach Amphitheatre, Wantagh, NY

Set 1: Jam > The Wheel > No More Do I > Into the Mystic > Strange World > The Eleven > Uncle John's Band > Weather Report Suite > Let It Grow

Set 2: Help On the Way > Slipknot > Shakedown Street > Nothing Else Matters > Cryptical Envelopment > The Other One > Dark Star > Unbroken Chain > Slipknot > Franklin's Tower, E: We Bid You Goodnight

Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring.

  • @ryan928.....you clearly have NO idea what you're talking about. Hammet is a good metal guitarist but doesn't hold a candle to Haynes

  • @aemerson0425 you are right :) this guy clearly know wtf he is talking about

  • @aemerson0425 hammet wrote this song right? gave haynes the song to cover..

  • @BrownSkyBlueDirtBAND...I fail to see the relevance. my comment was mainly based off of him saying they suck, when warren haynes is BY FAR way more talented than hammet, and the rest of the members of metallica(they really need to give it up)

  • @aemerson0425 i see.. sorry man.

  • @BrownSkyBlueDirtBAND..No worries

  • The first solo was jimmy herring! You sure this isn't the Quartet? (Phil Lesh and friends with Warren and Jimmy)

  • I wonder whos idea it was for the dead to do a metallica cover.

  • I actually kinda dig this version more than the original....is that blasphemous?

  • @jtoosph22

nope. i like dave matthews' version of all along the watchtower more than dylans

  • FUCKING SWEET!!!

  • Warren Haynes humbles Metallica. What a fucking talent this man is!!

  • Wow, that is badass! I found out about Warren from the DMB Cortez the Killer cover, im glad I found him.

  • @ih8urVideo check out hemplation vol 1 and 2 .....

  • Nice cover. Not really my style but very nicely done.

  • there is few covers i like more then the original, while my guitar gently weeps with toto, whiskey in the jar with metallica, Lake of fire with Nirvana, Along the watchtower with Jimi Hendrix, House of the Rising Sun with Frijid Pink and Stop! with Joe Bonamassa.

  • warren has that perfect pained voice for this song!

  • The shit...period

  • some songs are not to be covered, this is one of em :D

  • @efhsa8731 Yes, and only because there are TOO MANY covers of this mediocre song!!!

  • @Zepster77 lmao, 'Stairway', anyone?

  • @efhsa8731 It's because of attitudes like this that the industry has gone to shit, with regurgitated licks and boy bands. People have lost track of what music is all about and covering a GREAT song like this is a good way to keep it alive. Now I'm going to go cover this one.

  • @TheDragonDeacon because of this attitude? heh its just my feelings for the original. It's playd everyday on the radio untill u get nuts :P, its not like it will die. The industry was more shityer before. boy bands has always existed, since early 60's with beatles :D. Good music still exist, but its hard to find it behind all the crap that apears today. But i dont mind covers at all, its about personal feelings aswell, to that specific song that growes with you. so what is music all about??

  • @efhsa8731 you say it's about personal feelings, and I agree, but the problem is that with these teenie-bobber songs, the image outweighs the music. Teen girls don't listen to the backstreet boys because is sounds good, it's because the image is en vogue. I'll tell you what gives me hope though is young artist like Jason Mraz and Jamie Cullum. They're bringing style back to jazz and eclectic music. Didn't mean to come off as an ass though.

  • @TheDragonDeacon yeah i agree. but. when i grew up i was influenced with good music all the time at home. I remember when my dad turned on Hotel California loud and i like "WOW!" :D. and im glad for that. It made me find good music i like at early age. Most teens followes trends, and the main stream" and what other listens to, what people wants seems to be boy bands and the stuff mtv brings up, maby it is the industry's fault? maby our fault? :D mtv was better to balance the generes before,

  • @efhsa8731 I hope you aren't saying that Hotel California isn't main stream.

  • @stealyshockers Hotel California is mainstream actually

  • @johnstangg I thought you made it sound like some kind of obscure song no one knew about.

  • @stealyshockers Yeah it's not popular at all :/

  • @efhsa8731 because of this attitude? heh its just my feelings for the original.

  • @TheDragonDeacon A problem is that media followes whats trendy, what people wants is where money lies, and yeah there is something wrong with music today. there are too many young artists that is allowed to make music ;D. but there is hope when guys like Joe Bonamassa is here to carry the torch of rock into the unknown with the new band, Black Country Communion. check it out! :D is musicans like that, who makes a difference of what survives and not.

  • WOW I ACTUALLY LIKE THIS

  • @legunncat and @accountabilityUSA, much of the dead scene has changed and that came about with Jerry's passing. I remember back when you could go to a dead show and be Buddhist, Christian, Muslim, Wiccan, Etc and nobody would care what you "were" but the new kids on the scene are very judgmental. I am a Christian and have been judged many times by others for my beliefs. What happened to the old days? If your not going along with everybody else then your outcast. Take a thumb print and chill

  • I like metallica....when they arent playing. LOL. Warren is everywhere...he might be god.

  • @rotagen5 asshole

  • sweet

  • This is bad ass!

  • its like a moment frozen in time great vid of it

  • warren should be aloud to pull out rosebud and the bolt for some shows?

  • i was there too

same night as the Phish reunion (context).

    --------------------------------------

the year before at the Beach w Joan iller though

the Only The Strange from these shows still sticks with me though..

...if anyone has post and link in comments here

  • i think this is batter then the original

  • i'm black.

  • @LTCimbulletproof i'm not

  • Metallica se deverian de sentir alagados por que alguien de otro nivel mas altisimo les saque un cover a ellos jajjaa

  • Check out Warren Haynes with Dave Matthews Band covering Cortez the Killer...one of the best that I have seen

  • @hwjackson11

just saw them perform it at the gorge in Washington. Holy SHIT

  • awesome cover dude,

  • yea the dead prolly wassent as exciting as govt mule and the brothers but when jerry was alive they were rockin man, jerrys the one who strated it all gotta show respect

  • @spreadthepanicful I don't know what you are talking about. I've been seeing Bob and Phil every summer. Seems pretty exciting every time I go.

  • I saw the Dead several times, and I gotta say they werent all that great. I'd rather see the Allman Bros. or Govt Mule any day over the Dead. Besides, I got sick and tired of all the dirty panhandling hippies begging for a few bucks so they could buy some acid. GET A JOB!!!!

  • I wonder how Matallica would think of this version.

  • The guys in Metallica have been Gov't Mule fans for quite a while. They interviewed Warren for a feature in one of the guitar magazines a few years ago.

  • Okay.....That answers my question. James, Lars, and the rest of the band, always struck me as being more then just metal stars. They seem like very intelligent , rational people.

  • Well That answers my question. Thankyou

  • @Tom6093 they'd sue.

  • I grew up listening to the Dead since my Dad toured with them since 69'. I am only 20, but i got to see the Dead play one of their last shows (Highgate VT, 95') when i was 5 years old. My dad figured i was old enough to see them. Weird how Jerry passed away so shortly after.

I met Warren at GOTV in 2000 (again, fairly young) with my father. Extremely nice guy, IMO the most skilled and versatile player out there.

I try to see Mule and The Dead as much as i can.

  • You're lucky dude! I never got to see Jerry play live!

  • your a lucky man to say you've seen the dead when jerry was alive, id give anything man

  • @PatrickSharp10

this is a warren song though

  • I'd just bet you're a 'politically correct' Deadhead these days too...hmpff!..and you wanna talk about insults?.....lol.

  • I'm a deadhead. You know, the people that followed the dead. All that ended when Jerry died. All that ended a long time ago.

As for being politically correct. If I told you I like shaved pussy, chewing tobacco and not recycling, would that get me off the hook?

    oxoxox

  • well I don't know if it would really..you'd be better off asking Jerry about that...I'll give you a few points for coming up with a

    "a-political" answer though...lol.

Here's a thought....Would you consider Jerry "the" deadhead of deadheads?..... if so.......

How could Jerry die if he was already DEAD?

Which leads to the final question...

    Will the "Dead"..ever die?

  • The band aren't deadheads.

  • the answer to the last question is: NO! The Dead will NEVER die!

  • @legunncat Speak for yourself. It might have ended for you when Jerry died. But, it began for many others while it ended for you.

  • @stealyshockers It ended period. Jerry is and was the Grateful Dead. Don't delude yourself.

  • @stealyshockers Keep rockin' though.

  • @legunncat suck a cock buddy

  • @accountabilityUSA I've got underwear older then you and I've actually seen the Grateful Dead.

  • @legunncat keep talkin shit about Phil's greed dude. it makes you cool.

and how do you know what i've "actually" seen?

  • @accountabilityUSA Clearly you're cut from the cloth of the new generation. Enjoy your scene sparky.

  • @legunncat you're a "real" deadhed, eh?

is that why your wings are so bright? you're just a ball-o-sunshine.

in my opinion this song was a little private jab at Phish, being that Mike Gordon was caught and beaten for kinda obsconding with a little girl in the lot, the year before.

but really, havent you at least leaned that what was doesnt matter, and that Being in the moment is what Is? where's your head at? talkin shit and attempting to belittle those you consider children

  • Comment removed

  • @accountabilityUSA cmon dude. the dead is above digging at Phish. do you understand these guys AT ALL?

  • @kevindoohan i dunno man.

a lot of fair-weather deadheads left tour to get stuck in the rain in maine this date...

    ...only the strange remained.

not all that it was, but it was there

  • It's Great

  • if you think this is good y'all should check out his cover of cortez the killer with dave matthews, blows your mind!

  • @WhiskeyTango12

    agree :D

  • @WhiskeyTango12 and even more him playing welcome home with coheed and cambria is amazing

  • @WhiskeyTango12 definitely, i heard that a while back. my mind was blown the second i saw the title.

  • @WhiskeyTango12 just came from there,weird ain't it...you're right -blows your mind.awesome.

  • @WhiskeyTango12, you should check out him and dave playing all along the watchtower, it's sick

  • @WhiskeyTango12 Even Neil stated that their (Warren's and Dave's) performance was even better than his own ...

  • Terrible Video...

  • Now that's cool!!!!!! MetallicA jazzed up by the dead. Jerry would have grooved on this and I bet James Hetfield would have stood there next to him.

  • I hope you meant Kirk haMETTallica lol

  • Some people just can' t take the truth.

  • great cover

  • I liked his version of the U2 song way better than their own version......I totally dig his cover of "Lucky" by radiohead.

  • Actually not as bad as one would think. I was at the last 3 shows of this tour. It was good and bad. Good to see Branford for the 2nd set one night. The bad was when Warren sang One by U2- It almost made me puke.

  • pallet3437> I must say though that by Warren's standards, this is pretty bad singing. :-(

  • Deadhead? Who me? No, I barely know their name to be honest.

I love Gov't Mule to bits though.

  • this song and "had to cry today" are his two worst songs he sings. they don't match his vocals. but hey, i still love him.

  • bbs401> same here =). And after one and a half years Gov't Mule are finally touring in Europe again now.

  • he's never sang had to cry today.

  • A little rough -- However, I like how he sings it better way than the original.

  • freakin amazing

  • this was written by metallica not jerry sorry

  • That's not what was meant by "this is what Jerry would have wanted"......

  • !! Very Nice!!

  • B-E-A-utiful!

  • !!! Great!!!

  • wow this is what jerry would have wanted amazing performance ..

  • it's just different, music is supposed to be enjoyed, if you don't enjoy it, too bad, the more you enjoy, the more enjoyable life is

  • very well said!!!

  • I was at this show and it was incredible and it was this song that I remember about the show after all these years.

  • Your a f-in tool....

  • awesome video

  • Thank You!

I was there and it was an awesome performance. A lot of people must agree because this simple video has over 50,000 views.

  • @bobaji I was there with my girlfriend (wife now), we were kinda blown away to hear this song but not in a good way. No offense to anyone that likes this song its just not my cup of tea, especially at a dead show. I remember shakedown street was full of cops. My girl and I were some of the first people to set up on lot and we saw people getting arrested right when they arrived, it was sad. My favorite show from that tour was in Atlanta.

  • @bobaji lol yah look no 136,870

  • @harleygal59

    is he still touring now?

after i heard him for the first time i was hooked.

  • wow is all i can say like this version great job it is righton ^5

  • even Billy Mayes could kick Chuck Norris' ass

  • never thought nothing else matters could be so bluesy..great spin on the song..good solos

  • This is less than 5 stars? Fuck you idiots. This is a 5 star performance.

  • Agree fully !!!!!!

  • Better vocals than Hetfield's braying

  • This WAS The Dead not PLF or Mule. It was Phil Lesh's son Graham's idea to do the song....not bad but don't expect these types of covers this spring tour!

  • i doubt the dead and warren covered this metalica song. More than likely it g mule.

  • This version was by Phil & Friends at Jones Beach

  • cant u hear bobby

  • warren would throw a slide in the air and roundhouse it into chuck norris' face as it came down

  • ahaha, nice

  • few people know that bigfoot is actually a piece of warren haynes hair that gained sentience and escaped.

  • Warren bridges the gap between metal heads and hippie rockers.

  • i so love that guitar twang! Great stuff

  • Amazing.

  • hahhaaa that's what i thought when I saw the comment of hopbang. That Warren's much better that Norris.... :)

    Take care my friend

  • It's TRUE!

  • Originally a Metallica song, I personally still like Apocalyptica's version best lol

  • warren is so good that whenever he plays his hair blows in the wind...even with no wind

  • maybe that's because you're always tripping. Cause its true for me

  • Kick ass cover. Thanks for posting.

  • umm who wrote this song?

  • metalica

  • no one beats JERRY .

  • sorry buddy jerry was dead when htis was

  • WOW! Blew me away

  • Doesn`t beat the original!

  • Warren is 1 of the greatest guitar players ever!!!! and if ny 1 disagrees i'll kick ur fucking ass

  • no one dares to disagree, lol.

how could he? warren is so skilled, AND soulful.

  • and the sonofabitch would deserve it too
