Half of these comments are just signs of ignorance. I've marched both styles and they both are hard at times. If you haven't marched both than maybe you should grow a pair and stop feeding into what your brain dead directors are telling you. There are core bands that sound like crap too btw...
LOL this was my band I'm down there lol this was my last year as Trombone Section Leader known as the NSU Horny Horns... RU was fun I love their crowd so much Spirit! Although our band was in ones opinion a lot more entertaining, RU football team kicked our assss lol
the funny part about these comments about how all hbcb bands do is dance, and dont do any drills and play easy music, well its mighty funny how when you turn on espn and hear lsu playing neck or a hip hop song in the stands thats the influence of our culture.So to whoever saying you dont like dancing bands thats ur opinion ur entitled to it, but dont disrespect the talent and musicianship that the hbcbs have. honestly corp style marching bands are boring no excitement.that is all
Theres a reason you never have any "Black high stepping marching bands form the south'' [quoted directly from mrpinkpanther2010], in the finals at any marching competition. They just look ridiculous and are a disgrace to marching bands. Sure it looks cool, but its alot harder to march perfectly in line and smooth then it is to high step. I just hate dancing bands like this.
@Nevershoutnever57 All the moves drum corps do, come from show bands. if it weren't for our influence they would just march, play, and be friggin boring (even more so than they are now.) NSU and many other show bands are clean sounding, and while their shows aren't perfect, it's only because they do a different show each time instead of practicing the same fucking one 4,000 times over 3 years. And glide walking is NOT harder than 90 degree high stepping.

This is Norfolk State Universties Spartan Legion Marching Band in VA. a HBCU in the Meac conf. they made RU Students dislike thier Own band. most HBCU collegs are like this
No, they didn't make the RU students dislike their own band...they did however, impress the fans. They are in a different class of band...kind of like the difference between the 2 football teams (remember the final score? 59-0 with no starting RU players getting any game time in the second half).
BTW, sinc ethis was homecoming and the Aluni band joined the undergrads the halftime show is just a "throw-together" with only about 20 minutes of practice. I admit the first song really sucked! Alumni were like "WTF is this?" Second song and post game were MUCH better! I may go to an NSU game just to see their band again!
Always easy to cut someone down...too bad the music majors on scholarship are not "encouraged" to join the band. Most of the members are just there cause they like to play.
I checked out the forums and what they are doing is downing the DIRECTOR...much of that from the students. Personally I think his days are numbered...the band hasn't shown any real improvement in the past 5 years or more. When I was there we had a TREMENDOUS improvement from my sophmore-senior year (many years ago).

Frankly 5blkblts, that is the reason why myself, many of the NSu alumni, or anyone else attend the games in the first place...to hear the band! It's pretty much a given that the football team will lose, so we figure why not have some entertainment while the team gets spanked! However in all honesty, there is no experience like two HBC bands having a go at it, usually this is better than the football game itself!
Yeah, that's pretty much what I said to the NSU director after the game...The football team exists to give the band a place to perform! They playing Grambling this season? My coworker went there and played sax in that band...would be a good one to see!
We have'nt played Grambling since the 70's, and to my knowledge we have never beaten them...ever! Even if we did play them again, I honestly don't think the football team will do very well!
BTW, What the hell happened to RU against Maryland?! Just when I was just starting to pull for Knights, now all of a sudden I have to listen to all these a-holes from Maryland brag about how they got lucky and beat a nationally ranked team!
It's that "top ten" curse coming home to roost! Happened last year against Cinci! Part was due to the 60lbs per player the defense gave to the Terps offensive line but I think part was also due to RU not developing their running game! What did they have, like 80 rushing yards? 60 for Rice and 15 for Teel? "Hey guys, I think they're going to pass"
Well regardless, I'm more than certain you all will have your stuff together for the upcoming game against Cinci! As for our team, we really have our work cut out for us in the upcoming weeks!
