@k3lp00 Actually, the movies ended up ripping each other off; at least, the Miramax version (this one) and Aladdin. While The Thief and the Cobbler was in production, Aladdin drew inspiration from this film. When Aladdin was released, Miramax decided to shoehorn musical numbers into this film.
I think the Nostalgia Critic gives a better explanation.
@immblueversion Yeah, it may be a kind of Kimba/Simba thing. Stating that anything done by Disney is a one sided ripoff is out of place since all animated movies owe a great deal to Disney anyway.
Last night I watched the entire original film which has some scenes that are pencil tests with audio (some parts lose color and switch to pencil line drawings). Still.. it was amazing! Glorious animation meets extraordinary imagination =)
Now I wanted to share the trailer which represents the film I saw. This is not it.
People tried to piece together the movie as close to the intention of Richard Williams as possible, but the intention of this trailer was not as great.
this is a great movie that critics call "An insult to a man's 30 years life work and crushed dreams so Miramax (a subsidiary of disney i might add) can make a failed attempt to get cash instead of helping complete a movie that SHOULD have gone down in history of the greatest piece of animation created by man with out computers....BUT NOOOOoooo we have to settle for either this shit or a bootleg version (which is very nice i might add.)"
thats what critics say..sigh..fucking Brodrick and his fish
I remember seeing this trailer when I was little and I always thought it looked pretty cool. But watching it now after learning the history behind the movie and watching the Recobbled cut, it's nothing but a lie to me.
Read all that comments really makes me sad: this crappy version was released by Disney only in order to make money. The original movie was started LONG TIME before Aladdin and, actually, Aladdin ripp-off a lot of things from here. And it is a real masterpiece. Unfortunately, the film was never finished but the "recobbled cut" is quite faithful to the original intentions of its creators.
If you're familiar with the story of Aladdin at all, it actually comes from an Islamic/Arabian myth/story. Just like there are many "Cinderella" stories or "The boy who cried wolf" stories, there are many "Aladdin" stories. It's not a ripoff off another. It' the way stories have traveled and worked for like...ever. If anyone wants to call this a ripoff and terrible version of Aladdin, then people can call Aladdin a ripoff or terrible version of an actual Arabian story -_-
@Tachrina Actually, Aladdin is a Chinese tale that made its way to the French translator of One Thousand and One Nights through an Arab Serbian. But yes, you make a very valid point. :D In fact, that actually sort of reinforces your point, doesn't it?
this is exactly like Aladdin! when did the critics say that it was phenomenally imaginative! evil dude and bird, boy who is poor, pretty princess, like costumes, king, 0:58 even looks like gini! oh, lets not frget princess and poor dude get married!
@LoveMe06HateMe Actually, this is an animated film started in the 50s by richard williams who was an instigator and incredibly influential to animators to this day. Aladdin was made in the early 90s and had a lot to do with this film never being completed. It was not seen as commercially viable following the release of aladdin. To say that this film is a copy of aladdin is to be wrong by about 30 years.
Before i added this movie to my christmas list, i had to see if the miramax version included the voice overs for the cobbler and the thief ........-_____- Thanks a lot miramax i doubt i even still want the movie now. guess i'll just watch the original on youtube! Thanks Youtube!!!= )

OHHH DEAR GOD, MIRAMAX RAPED THIS ANIMATION...no wonder why richard Williams doesn't want to talk about this anymore u.u The Recobbled Cut it's a Master Piece!!!

I have such a distinct nostalgic feeling about this movie but can't remember for the life of me when I watched it. Now it's just really strange to me. Some parts shouldn't be for kids in my opinion...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What's so special about the recobbled version? Half of the animation is incomplete, and the Thief and the Cobbler have no lines! The audio was kinda scratchy, too.
For years, I had only seen this trailer, not the actual movie. Tonight, for the first time, I actually saw the movie. I think I would have been better off if I'd only seen the trailer and left it at that.
I thought that this trailer sums up perfectly why the Miramax version (a.k.a Arabian Knight) is so bad: Sickeningly cute, lame pop songs, bad animation that makes it look cheap, and numerous cartoon cliches.
It's so sad what the film became like after Richard Williams spent 25 years working on it, trying to make an epic artistic film for adults - but it became a farce for kids.
What version did you watch? I surely understand your opinion if you saw this version.
It was the Miramax version. A couple of my roommates said they grew up on it and were really impressed with the animation. I think the story behind the movie is much better than the movie itself. I love Richard William's Pink Panther credit sequences.
Yeah, from what I've heard, Williams can't even get himself to talk about T&C during things like interviews. That may indicate some emotional trauma or devastation.
You should see the original version of this movie, b/c Tack didn't talk until the end of the movie & it didn't have any musical numbers. It's called the Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled Cut.
I remember seeing this preview when I was little and I wanted 2 c this movie soooooo bad and now I saw it and I freakin' love it. i found it on VHS @ Goodwill for a dollar.
Nice, now, where can I find this movie?! To buy, to download, whatever, just how do I find it? If this is the Majestic Films version, I want it. If it isn't, don't bother to tell me where to get it.
I fully understand that. The only problem is that Zig Zag's character was designed in the 70s, some twenty years before production for Aladdin even began.
ok. but still...i hadn't seen (or even heard about) this movie before i saw Aladdin. so seeing as i saw Aladdin first, it's just natural for me to make the comparison the way i did. i wasn't saying that they stole the looks from Disney. i was just making a simple statement.
The studio took Richard Williams' original animation and added new voices to it, and created new sequences to create a totally different film. A lot of the art work remains Williams' own animation, but this film is not his at all. It was turned by them from a masterpiece that took him 30 years to make, into a much cheaper-looking film with horrible songs that people assume is a rip off of Aladdin. Do a youtube search for "the recobbled cut" to see a version that is much more authentic.
I loved that movie when I was younger. I rewatched it recently. Though I watched a verison of it where Tack had no lines until the end when he was voiced by Sean Connery. lol XD
Now THIS trailer is the one I remember from my old VHS tapes.

I have such a distinct nostalgic feeling about this movie but can't remember for the life of me when I watched it. Now it's just really strange to me. Some parts shouldn't be for kids in my opinion...
Oh, to be a child of the 90s.

the miramax version is absolute trash. thankfully the recobbled cut is available to watch on youtube.

What's so special about the recobbled version? Half of the animation is incomplete, and the Thief and the Cobbler have no lines! The audio was kinda scratchy, too.
ztslovebird 2 years ago
@ztslovebird At least it was when the film was still incomplete but in its intended form from its creator.

it's the closest thing we have to richard william's original version (which he spent 30 years creating)

LaukkuTheGreit 2 years ago 8
It was the Miramax version. A couple of my roommates said they grew up on it and were really impressed with the animation. I think the story behind the movie is much better than the movie itself. I love Richard William's Pink Panther credit sequences.

@LaukkuTheGreit
I only watched the Recobbled cut in full. It's kinda sad that Williams can't finish it now.
1. He's almost 80.
2. He got screwed over by corporate backstabbers all because of Disney.

@RocMegamanX
Yeah, from what I've heard, Williams can't even get himself to talk about T&C during things like interviews. That may indicate some emotional trauma or devastation.
MrNobody47710 1 year ago
To SylvesterFox007:
You should see the original version of this movie, b/c Tack didn't talk until the end of the movie & it didn't have any musical numbers. It's called the Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled Cut.

Nice, now, where can I find this movie?! To buy, to download, whatever, just how do I find it? If this is the Majestic Films version, I want it. If it isn't, don't bother to tell me where to get it.

i was just making a statement on the appearance of Zigzag. <_<
happysister02 2 years ago
I fully understand that. The only problem is that Zig Zag's character was designed in the 70s, some twenty years before production for Aladdin even began.

HankPeters 2 years ago 6
ok. but still...i hadn't seen (or even heard about) this movie before i saw Aladdin. so seeing as i saw Aladdin first, it's just natural for me to make the comparison the way i did. i wasn't saying that they stole the looks from Disney. i was just making a simple statement.
happysister02 2 years ago
so the fineshed version isnt done by the original author?
nekoyokai 2 years ago
The studio took Richard Williams' original animation and added new voices to it, and created new sequences to create a totally different film. A lot of the art work remains Williams' own animation, but this film is not his at all. It was turned by them from a masterpiece that took him 30 years to make, into a much cheaper-looking film with horrible songs that people assume is a rip off of Aladdin. Do a youtube search for "the recobbled cut" to see a version that is much more authentic.

I loved that movie when I was younger. I rewatched it recently. Though I watched a verison of it where Tack had no lines until the end when he was voiced by Sean Connery. lol XD
