@k3lp00 Actually, the movies ended up ripping each other off; at least, the Miramax version (this one) and Aladdin. While The Thief and the Cobbler was in production, Aladdin drew inspiration from this film. When Aladdin was released, Miramax decided to shoehorn musical numbers into this film.

Last night I watched the entire original film which has some scenes that are pencil tests with audio (some parts lose color and switch to pencil line drawings). Still.. it was amazing! Glorious animation meets extraordinary imagination =)

Now I wanted to share the trailer which represents the film I saw. This is not it.

People tried to piece together the movie as close to the intention of Richard Williams as possible, but the intention of this trailer was not as great.

Read all that comments really makes me sad: this crappy version was released by Disney only in order to make money. The original movie was started LONG TIME before Aladdin and, actually, Aladdin ripp-off a lot of things from here. And it is a real masterpiece. Unfortunately, the film was never finished but the "recobbled cut" is quite faithful to the original intentions of its creators.

If you're familiar with the story of Aladdin at all, it actually comes from an Islamic/Arabian myth/story. Just like there are many "Cinderella" stories or "The boy who cried wolf" stories, there are many "Aladdin" stories. It's not a ripoff off another. It' the way stories have traveled and worked for like...ever. If anyone wants to call this a ripoff and terrible version of Aladdin, then people can call Aladdin a ripoff or terrible version of an actual Arabian story -_-

@LoveMe06HateMe Actually, this is an animated film started in the 50s by richard williams who was an instigator and incredibly influential to animators to this day. Aladdin was made in the early 90s and had a lot to do with this film never being completed. It was not seen as commercially viable following the release of aladdin. To say that this film is a copy of aladdin is to be wrong by about 30 years.

No. Absolutely not.

The "Thief and the cobbler" is the REAL version while "Arabian Knights" and "The princess and the cobbler" are the other versions that don't stand up to the original. The original was unfinished because of time and financial difficulties, but it's still the best.

I know of 2 versions, the first one isnt really finnished, there are a lot of sketched parts in it and the thief isnt talking. In the "finnished" version some things have been changed and the thief talks, though most of it is meaningless and unnecessary.

I thought that this trailer sums up perfectly why the Miramax version (a.k.a Arabian Knight) is so bad: Sickeningly cute, lame pop songs, bad animation that makes it look cheap, and numerous cartoon cliches.

It's so sad what the film became like after Richard Williams spent 25 years working on it, trying to make an epic artistic film for adults - but it became a farce for kids.

What version did you watch? I surely understand your opinion if you saw this version.

It was the Miramax version. A couple of my roommates said they grew up on it and were really impressed with the animation. I think the story behind the movie is much better than the movie itself. I love Richard William's Pink Panther credit sequences.

The studio took Richard Williams' original animation and added new voices to it, and created new sequences to create a totally different film. A lot of the art work remains Williams' own animation, but this film is not his at all. It was turned by them from a masterpiece that took him 30 years to make, into a much cheaper-looking film with horrible songs that people assume is a rip off of Aladdin. Do a youtube search for "the recobbled cut" to see a version that is much more authentic.
