well guess it doesnt matter if the windows 7 was a trial version, he still included window XP, extra battery,2 gigs of ram, and not to mention 300 gig of hdd!!! i only wish i had bid with more confidence and won the it =/
Yep. That's why I couldn't find it. The auction was over.
From the pictures, it looked like the hardware configuration was legitimate. The 900HA already had one battery installed, and the second battery was also in the shot.
The only doubt I have are the authenticity of Windows 7 and Microsoft Office. Those components alone should have been worth well over $200. They could have been trial or pre-release versions.
It might not entirely be a red flag, but it was definitely a yellow one.
A 1.3 MP camera (the 900HA only has 0.3 MP) and Win 7 Ultimate ($175 for a legit OEM license) along with 2 GB of RAM ($25) and a 320 GB drive ($90) all for $231?
Seems a bit suspicious, especially the addition of Win 7 Ultimate.
Check out their support site (support asus com) to see if they have a solution for that. If not, you might have to send it to Asus to have them reset the BIOS.
How did you try to install a new BIOS? From the ASUS Windows utility? From a USB flash drive?
@TheCanadianPublic i downloded it to destop then i installed half way the power turned becase of a thuder strike there wasnt battery turn it on again nothing cam up
For now, I'm limiting myself to using bad products as doorstops. But one day, there will be a product that's so horrible in both form and function that I'll...
All the netbook manufacturers have done an excellent job in the quality department. Even when trying them in the stores, not a single netbook has ever felt excessively "cheap". In fact, I'm surprised by how similar they all are in quality.
However, there are two things that would make me immediately reject a netbook purchase. The first is no user upgradable hard drive and memory (which I always upgrade), and the second is mouse buttons positioned on the side of the trackpad (too awkward).
Asus is notorious for upgrading their netbooks as often as they change their underwear. :)
I also have to admit that after using the 1000HE for a while, that extra inch of screen space resulted in much better netbook ergonomics. Bigger screen, longer battery, more natural keyboard size, only a bit heavier than the 900HA, and still fits perfectly in netbook shoulder bags.

In Canada, Staples HAD it for $309, but they're out of stock.
You may be better off searching for the 1000HE, or better yet the 1005HA which should be the same price or less than the 1000HE depending on your choice of battery capacity.

It should. I was able to run Sim City 4 on my Fujitsu U810, and that has an Intel A110 processor with about half the processing power of the Atom processor in the 900HA and 1000HE.

Thank you for the great review. I watched the reviews for both the 900HA and 1000HE and was able to choose the 900HA for my netbook. I wanted as small and powerful as possible and the advantages on the 1000HE didn't offset the larger size and over $100 increased price for me. Thanks for doing such great reviews to make my decision easy.
When it comes to gaming, I actually think it's worth mentioning that this netbook can actually run Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas quite well...
GTA IV, however, would probably result in 2-3 FPS and a BSOD. :P
Don't forget to also check out my review of the 1000HE (the link is in the show notes). Both computers are great, but there's enough significant differences between the two of them to make you choose one over the other.
I have already seen the review of the 1000HE, and I can honestly say that the 60 MHz processor boost and extra inch of screen base just isn't worth an extra $100 USD. I have also taken note of the WiFi Draft-N and Bluetooth capabilities of the 1000HE, and much like you have pointed out in your review, I am one of the many who simply do not require those Wireless protocols. Also, the webcam is a superficial issue.
why cant they make a laptop/netbook for like 300$ with a good cpu and ram and video card, with out stupid cd players, the lenovo is cool xcept im sure if they took the cd player out it would drop the price and own acer eee or msi
Great review. Very helpful with lust for the eepc series. The 900's are great. However, like you, ssd's suck, especially with my 901. The 901 has room for a 1.8" laptop mechanical hard drive. But, mine ended up being a remanufactured unit. The interface for a laptop mechanical hard drive was not there. Luckily i was able to sell the 901, and purchased a 900ha.I watched your review much after i did my purchase, great job nonetheless. Makes me feel even better about the good purchase i already made
Do you think i should save my money for the Asus Eee 900HA? I can get it for $250 or less on Amazon :D!
Question:
Can I use my sprint aircard on this laptop as well? I'm not saying if I can get internet on my 2 laptops at once, I'm saying can I put my aircard in the Eee 900HA and will it work or do aircards only work for one and only one laptop ever?
I recently got an asus eee 900ha as belated xmas gift from a distant relative. I love using it, and no problem with keyboard since I am 2 finger typist. TheCanadianPublic, you said there are aftermarket larger capacity batteries for it, but so far found nothing, even from Asus. Got a microdongle for blutooth, so no problemthere, but I also heard there is a way to mod the asus to upgrade wifi card to N. Is that possible?
Surprisingly, the after-market battery for the 900HA never materialized, which is regrettable. Just an extra two cells would give it a six hour capacity. It's possible the arrival of the 1000HE (HA with Extended battery) put a stop to this.
I haven't tried upgrading the Wi-Fi card inside the 900HA, so I don't know what's involved. Sorry.
great review - so much so that I write this on my brand new 900ha. I had a quick question about your color adjustments though - how did you get to that particular screen in XP? Thanks!
i just ordered a 901 from amazon because they were on a crazy sale (only 270 dollars!) but in retrospect i wish a bought the 900ha, granted i haven't received my 901 yet.
The better question should be: is it okay to install it on ANYTHING? :)
Microsoft Office should work properly, but it might be very slow. The bloat, licensing issues, and high costs are the main reasons why I dropped them in favour of OpenOffice.
You've never heard a good condition record played on a properly set up turntable system, have you? It can be the sweetest sound you've ever heard.
Check out part 3 of my video series on the 2008 Montreal Hi-Fi Expo. There are examples of records played on vinyl systems. They sound even better when you're actually there.
And no, I've never tried MiniDisc. I've considered it a while back, but found it too expensive and too proprietary.
but i have still one question left (not your fault just interest) i thought a SSD is faster when reading and writing data so why were there such horrible performance issues with the 900 ?? And is the SSD of the 900 changable to a larger SSD? or is just the HDD of the 900HA changable??
SSDs were SUPPOSE to be faster, but it turns out they're not, especially in their write speeds. Then there's the problem of them wearing out much faster than traditional hard drives.
The SSD included with the 900 is a very slow, low quality product. Runcore produces much faster SSDs for the Eee PC line, but their reliability and longevity have yet to be proven.
And they still cost much more than a traditional hard drive.
WOW totally wrong. slc ssd drives are faster than most hard drives, and the really high quality slc ssd are MUCH faster, but still to expensive to be a consumer product. The eee ssd's are just cheap mlc ones, used so that the netbook is cheap, which is the main point.
all (at least I think) ssds in the eee pc models are swappable, it just depends on the amount of digging that you are willing to do, unless the components are soldered-in. It's really just a matter of whether you are willing to void your warranty or not.
The only SSD that's soldered into the 900 is the fast 4GB drive (if your unit has it) which can be turned off in the BIOS. You can make the after-market SSD the only drive in the 900.
As long as the after-market SSD is not responsible for any damage or defect encountered by the 900, you shouldn't have any warranty issues.
I prefer the Atom myself. The 900's Celeron processor is not what I would call a decent performer. The Atom processor in the 900HA however still surprises me by what it can do. Add to that the cheap price of the 900HA, and it becomes a no-brainer for that class of machine.
If you need a bigger keyboard and screen, check out the 1000HA. But at about $540 Canadian, you might want to start looking at more mainstream (and more powerful) notebooks.
It should be okay. I've developed large scale applications for years on less powerful machines. Most IDEs (Integrated Development Environments) hardly do anything at all when you're simply editing the source code. It's only when you do a clean build of your project that the CPU goes crazy.
As for the databases, if you make sure you have decent primary keys, indexes, joins and views in your database schema, then even a large database should run smoothly.
I walked into Staples hoping they'd have this model, and they did. Try Staples Calgary (Alberta) if you want to get one, they had 11 in stock as of Jan31/09.
US or French Canadian keyboard on the English language OS?
In Montreal, it's the French Canadian keyboard on the French version of the OS. I haven't seen a demo of the English language OS, so I don't know which keyboard is on that one.
I prefer a French Canadian keyboard layout regardless of the language of the OS. I need my "haccents". :)
ah good review! this is the only netbook that i'm finding really appealing so far. SSD is overrated i think...and i'm not going to be tossing the netbook around, so i'm not too worried about moving parts.
Well I posted here earlier... I have a 900HA. My boot time is 40 seconds until a usable state, and I have avast! on boot up and a custom visual theme.
Few weeks ago I said you can give me your old eee and you said your door won't stay open, well it can stay open! :D Because I just purchased one of these in white :)
BTW, Case Logic now makes netbook cases. The shoulder bag could still use a couple of extra pockets, but it still surpasses just about everything else that's currently available on the market.
The vast majority of posted boot times are from fresh installs of the operating system. My boot times are done on computers that have had a few software applications loaded on them such as an antivirus, Web browser, media player, and office suite. I then measure the time it takes for the computer to boot up to a usable state where you can actually start working on your projects.
The BIG question is: are you planning to upgrade the memory and HD? If yes, then the 900HA is your best bet since such an upgrade won't void the warranty, unlike the Acer and MSI models.
You can also check out the larger Asus models. The models with "HA" in the model number have the same basic configuration as the 900HA, but in a bigger package, and with larger battery packs.
I am not planning to upgrade but it is nice to have the option. Also, the Aspire One 6 cell sticks out and presumably weights more which is a con for me considering 4 cell already gives 3-4 hours. Is the keyboard on 900HA better/worse than the one on Aspire ONe that you know of?
I believe the keys on the Acer are a bit wider which might help a few people with big fingers, but that's about it. The overall "feel" is pretty much the same. But I do hate the position of the mouse buttons though.
I've worked on a regular keyboard, and on the keyboard of my Fujitsu U810 which is VERY small. I can use a netbook keyboard pretty easily, but I wouldn't want it to be the only keyboard at my disposal. I still prefer a full sized keyboard for writing long documents.
Could you comment on the usability of the Eee PC 900HA with the Windows 7 beta installed? I'm extremely curious about the battery performance and processor/RAM usage on the new OS.
I've just posted a quickie of Windows 7 Beta on the 900HA. I couldn't do a reliable battery test since I couldn't adjust the processor's performance level to Power Saving mode. I also forgot to check out its memory usage, but that also would have been useless since I didn't have my entire software suite installed on the computer. And a lot of these programs have memory resident processes running in the background which can affect the results.
Not really. We're aware of each other, but that's pretty much it. He did criticize my review of the 900 though. :)
Chippy of umpcportal however does appreciate the real world approach in my reviews. I just feel that the computer should be working for you, and not the other way around.
I like your straight foreward reviews, unlike alot of other reviews that i have seen on youtube.
I have watched about 50+ eee reviews and unboxings, most gloss over the main details and go on and on about dumb things, like the way the shiny cover easily smudges.
Maybe not for long. I'm thinking of getting a Runcore SSD for the 900. Their prices are definitely more reasonable than the competition, and their performance is apparently way better as well.
Unfortunately for the 900, the product page at mydigitaldiscount had this warning which I originally missed.
"Note: Customers using the ASUS EEE PC 900 with the Celeron processor may experience problems with hard drive's performance. We believe that this is due to the Celeron processor conflicting with the controller on the hard disk. This may also affect other Celeron based EEE PC's such as the 701."
That was a big help, I think you answered most of my questions. I think this will be my choice out of the Acer Aspire and MSI Wind. Seems to be the most practical, and capable of doing everything I will need it for.
Myself, I've purchased a Crucial notebook memory stick, 2 GB DDR2 5300, 667 MHz. I don't know how well other brands of memory will function in the 900HA.
Question: will the media card reader on the 900HA only read SD cards or will it read other formats as well? I keep reading conflicting information on this.
SD, SDHC and MMC. No problems whatsoever, all read and write speeds are supported as expected.
Other formats such as MiniSD/SDHC or MicroSD/SDHC will require the adapter, which is usually included with the purchase of those flash memory formats (which are electronically identical to their "normal" sized counterparts).
I've just tried running the intro sequence of Runescape. It'll most likely play, but it'll be very choppy even with all the graphics options set to their minimum values and the computer set to Super Performance mode.
Stick with a desktop or very powerful laptop for this game.
Add i don't need to much space.

Don't forget to also check out my review of the 1000HE (the link is in the show notes). Both computers are great, but there's enough significant differences between the two of them to make you choose one over the other.
TheCanadianPublic 2 years ago
Thanks for the quick repsonse.
Thanks for the tip, anyway. :)

why cant they make a laptop/netbook for like 300$ with a good cpu and ram and video card, with out stupid cd players, the lenovo is cool xcept im sure if they took the cd player out it would drop the price and own acer eee or msi

I've tried Runescape, but it's a bit too processor intensive. Just the intro screens alone are a bit too choppy.
You'll either need a more powerful computer, or simpler games.

Thanks :)

Aircards are not device specific. If it's USB feel free to use it on any USB computer.

Is that possible?
dboymax1 2 years ago
Surprisingly, the after-market battery for the 900HA never materialized, which is regrettable. Just an extra two cells would give it a six hour capacity. It's possible the arrival of the 1000HE (HA with Extended battery) put a stop to this.
I haven't tried upgrading the Wi-Fi card inside the 900HA, so I don't know what's involved. Sorry.
TheCanadianPublic 2 years ago
great review - so much so that I write this on my brand new 900ha. I had a quick question about your color adjustments though - how did you get to that particular screen in XP? Thanks!
lizrdkiing 2 years ago
Right-click the desktop,
click Settings tab,
click Advanced button,
click Intel(R) Graphics Media Accelerator tab,
click Graphics Properties button,
click Color Correction tab.
Simple. :)
TheCanadianPublic 2 years ago
does that mean you can't use wireless (router) internet on it?
ngtobzzz 2 years ago
Yes, you can. All the shots that involved an Internet connection were accomplished with the computer's Wi-Fi connection. No wires were used.
If I had any problems with the Wi-Fi, I would have said so. Instead, it's rock-solid.
TheCanadianPublic 2 years ago
i just ordered a 901 from amazon because they were on a crazy sale (only 270 dollars!) but in retrospect i wish a bought the 900ha, granted i haven't received my 901 yet.

nice review! i like yours the best. would it be okay to install Microsoft office ?
mmmhmms143 2 years ago
The better question should be: is it okay to install it on ANYTHING? :)
Microsoft Office should work properly, but it might be very slow. The bloat, licensing issues, and high costs are the main reasons why I dropped them in favour of OpenOffice.

Class review, mate. Great attention to detail and illustration of comparisons.
But you're not serious about vinyl being the best medium for sound recordings, are you? Ever used MiniDisc?
colinmorris 2 years ago
You've never heard a good condition record played on a properly set up turntable system, have you? It can be the sweetest sound you've ever heard.
Check out part 3 of my video series on the 2008 Montreal Hi-Fi Expo. There are examples of records played on vinyl systems. They sound even better when you're actually there.
And no, I've never tried MiniDisc. I've considered it a while back, but found it too expensive and too proprietary.

I have to say: Great work buddy!!!
but i have still one question left (not your fault just interest) i thought a SSD is faster when reading and writing data so why were there such horrible performance issues with the 900 ?? And is the SSD of the 900 changable to a larger SSD? or is just the HDD of the 900HA changable??
Mystory1990 2 years ago
SSDs were SUPPOSE to be faster, but it turns out they're not, especially in their write speeds. Then there's the problem of them wearing out much faster than traditional hard drives.
The SSD included with the 900 is a very slow, low quality product. Runcore produces much faster SSDs for the Eee PC line, but their reliability and longevity have yet to be proven.
And they still cost much more than a traditional hard drive.
TheCanadianPublic 2 years ago
WOW totally wrong. slc ssd drives are faster than most hard drives, and the really high quality slc ssd are MUCH faster, but still to expensive to be a consumer product. The eee ssd's are just cheap mlc ones, used so that the netbook is cheap, which is the main point.
tommytwin24 2 years ago
all (at least I think) ssds in the eee pc models are swappable, it just depends on the amount of digging that you are willing to do, unless the components are soldered-in. It's really just a matter of whether you are willing to void your warranty or not.
jbiggs12 2 years ago
The only SSD that's soldered into the 900 is the fast 4GB drive (if your unit has it) which can be turned off in the BIOS. You can make the after-market SSD the only drive in the 900.
As long as the after-market SSD is not responsible for any damage or defect encountered by the 900, you shouldn't have any warranty issues.

supercyborgman123 3 years ago
Possibly Thermal Wattage, but both are basically very little power users :)
nofrillzzz 3 years ago
I prefer the Atom myself. The 900's Celeron processor is not what I would call a decent performer. The Atom processor in the 900HA however still surprises me by what it can do. Add to that the cheap price of the 900HA, and it becomes a no-brainer for that class of machine.
If you need a bigger keyboard and screen, check out the 1000HA. But at about $540 Canadian, you might want to start looking at more mainstream (and more powerful) notebooks.
TheCanadianPublic 3 years ago
Probably not but their may be some lag in the IntelliSense and/or database accessing...
nofrillzzz 3 years ago
It should be okay. I've developed large scale applications for years on less powerful machines. Most IDEs (Integrated Development Environments) hardly do anything at all when you're simply editing the source code. It's only when you do a clean build of your project that the CPU goes crazy.
As for the databases, if you make sure you have decent primary keys, indexes, joins and views in your database schema, then even a large database should run smoothly.
TheCanadianPublic 3 years ago
I walked into Staples hoping they'd have this model, and they did. Try Staples Calgary (Alberta) if you want to get one, they had 11 in stock as of Jan31/09.

US or French Canadian keyboard on the English language OS?
In Montreal, it's the French Canadian keyboard on the French version of the OS. I haven't seen a demo of the English language OS, so I don't know which keyboard is on that one.
I prefer a French Canadian keyboard layout regardless of the language of the OS. I need my "haccents". :)

I'm buying one...what was that software to reformat the hard drive?
DivorceTheFeds 3 years ago
That was an old version of PartitionMagic before Symantec bought them out.
Try GParted. It's free, and it works. Get the Live CD version, and you can use it on practically any computer loaded with practically any OS.
Apparently, it can't handle OS/2's HPFS. Bummer. :)

MBProdz 2 years ago
You should annotate the section on boot time to show it's ~31 seconds, not 1:30 :)
digifishmusic 3 years ago
Don't get me started on boot times, buster! :)
BTW, Case Logic now makes netbook cases. The shoulder bag could still use a couple of extra pockets, but it still surpasses just about everything else that's currently available on the market.
I might film a quickie of it.
TheCanadianPublic 3 years ago
Looking forward to your case review...what's the problem with 'boot times'? :)
digifishmusic 3 years ago
The vast majority of posted boot times are from fresh installs of the operating system. My boot times are done on computers that have had a few software applications loaded on them such as an antivirus, Web browser, media player, and office suite. I then measure the time it takes for the computer to boot up to a usable state where you can actually start working on your projects.

Do you recommend this over a Acer Aspire One with the 6-cell and 160 HD? This one is much cheaper but has a 4-cell.
PRGUY85 3 years ago
The BIG question is: are you planning to upgrade the memory and HD? If yes, then the 900HA is your best bet since such an upgrade won't void the warranty, unlike the Acer and MSI models.
You can also check out the larger Asus models. The models with "HA" in the model number have the same basic configuration as the 900HA, but in a bigger package, and with larger battery packs.
TheCanadianPublic 3 years ago
I am not planning to upgrade but it is nice to have the option. Also, the Aspire One 6 cell sticks out and presumably weights more which is a con for me considering 4 cell already gives 3-4 hours. Is the keyboard on 900HA better/worse than the one on Aspire ONe that you know of?
PRGUY85 3 years ago
I believe the keys on the Acer are a bit wider which might help a few people with big fingers, but that's about it. The overall "feel" is pretty much the same. But I do hate the position of the mouse buttons though.
I've worked on a regular keyboard, and on the keyboard of my Fujitsu U810 which is VERY small. I can use a netbook keyboard pretty easily, but I wouldn't want it to be the only keyboard at my disposal. I still prefer a full sized keyboard for writing long documents.
TheCanadianPublic 3 years ago
Could you comment on the usability of the Eee PC 900HA with the Windows 7 beta installed? I'm extremely curious about the battery performance and processor/RAM usage on the new OS.
danbert2000 3 years ago
That's an interesting test. And I do have spare SATA drives on which I can test it out without ruining my current installation.
I'm a bit short of time these days, so I make no promises. But I'll try to fit it into my schedule this weekend.
TheCanadianPublic 3 years ago
I've just posted a quickie of Windows 7 Beta on the 900HA. I couldn't do a reliable battery test since I couldn't adjust the processor's performance level to Power Saving mode. I also forgot to check out its memory usage, but that also would have been useless since I didn't have my entire software suite installed on the computer. And a lot of these programs have memory resident processes running in the background which can affect the results.
We'll wait for the official release.

Not really. We're aware of each other, but that's pretty much it. He did criticize my review of the 900 though. :)
Chippy of umpcportal however does appreciate the real world approach in my reviews. I just feel that the computer should be working for you, and not the other way around.
TheCanadianPublic 3 years ago
I like your straight foreward reviews, unlike alot of other reviews that i have seen on youtube.

Maybe not for long. I'm thinking of getting a Runcore SSD for the 900. Their prices are definitely more reasonable than the competition, and their performance is apparently way better as well.
TheCanadianPublic 3 years ago
And what's the price? Approximately
CipyThePunisher 3 years ago
16 GB = $69.99
32 GB = $119.99
64 GB = $199.99
Unfortunately for the 900, the product page at mydigitaldiscount had this warning which I originally missed.
"Note: Customers using the ASUS EEE PC 900 with the Celeron processor may experience problems with hard drive's performance. We believe that this is due to the Celeron processor conflicting with the controller on the hard disk. This may also affect other Celeron based EEE PC's such as the 701."
Hmm. Maybe even the upgrade isn't ready yet.

Great review, by the way, thanks so much.
megagoosey 3 years ago
SD, SDHC and MMC. No problems whatsoever, all read and write speeds are supported as expected.
Other formats such as MiniSD/SDHC or MicroSD/SDHC will require the adapter, which is usually included with the purchase of those flash memory formats (which are electronically identical to their "normal" sized counterparts).
