@killerNC17 No they did not - get your facts straight. The only time I know about where a German bombing was resulting in gas casualties was the bombing of port Bari, Italy where the SS John Harvey was sunk, containing mustard gas for possible rataliation attacks.

@RockMohican ...people saw the effects of gas in WWI. Even Hitler was poisoned once - no side wanted to bring to a level where gas was used on both sides. Everyone one sure there was a big counter attack with gas if the weapon was ever used. Just like the avoidance of a nuclear war later and today.

@Celeon999A Probably not :P But it was a good tv_series :) I really enyojed it as a kid! Even got the Verdun episode in comicbook :) Loved that episode because I've spent the summers in Verdun every summer since I was 5. But de Gaulle was actually taken prisoner at there in 1916. In the Fort Vaux sector. He was stabbed in the ass by a German bayonet. Apparently one of the guards moving him and his fellow p.o.w. towards the rear thaught he was moving along to slowly :P
if your wondering why they retreated, its because flamethrowers were just introduced in WW1 so many of those men probably hadn't seen them before, so i can imagine its a little scary for them with that humid mask on and flame shooting out of a deadly mist. its easy to say "just shoot back" from a computer
@theboxerheads Because its a part of one of the episodes of a TV-series called Young Indiana Jones. It takes place before Indy becomes an archeologist. Some episodes take place when he's a 10 year old kid, some when he's a 18 year old volonteer in the Belgian Army during World War One. And in most episodes he met some famous historical person or tooke part in some historical event.
@jd99germania 2 words. America and Russia. 2 powerful nations. One of which didn't enter the war until 1917 which means it was not as weary as the rest.
@doggun15 A country doesn't have to be a super power to affect the outcome of a war. Napolean's massive army was stopped by Russian over 100 years before. Russia had a massive population even in 1917. America was in the industrial revolution. And as I stated before, America had not for the most part been affected by the previous 3 years of war. And lets not forget the same lessons learned by Napolean and Hitler, not a good idea to fight a two front war.
@TheUndutchified Why are you calling me a faggot? Because I am not super patriotic? Go fuck yourself seriously, being high and mighty gets you no where.
@PBSmithy America was in every battle that the UK and France were in during that entire offensive, but the bulk of our forces were at the Meuse Argonne forest with the French !
Americans need to show a little more humility instead of saying "we won WWI" & "we won WWII" all the time. The reality is that you did not!
The hundred days offensive was the counter-offensive which resulted in the collapse of the German army and it was performed by a combination of forces from many countries. America's part was smaller than that of other countries even at the end of WWI.
@PBSmithy The UK would have surely been defeated by the nazis with out our help in WW2, as for WW1 the French and UK were getting stomped losing more men there enemy in almost every battle and the Russians backed out because of revolution. I don't see how 2 badly battered armies fighting trench warfare(which has no victor)could possibly suddenly brake the lines of a just as badly battered army in a year with out some fresh troops "cough" "cough" AEF "cough" cough". Fuck you, your dumb !
Which part of the history lesson I gave to you can't you understand?
I didn't make the "hundred days offensive" up! It actually happened! Your role in it was far smaller than either Britain or France and it led directly to the collapse of the German Empire & end of WWI. Try reading a book or two!
Soviets won WW2. More than 80% of the German land forces were defeated on the Eastern front
@PBSmithy glad too see such well learned history. defo 80% of the german army in ww2 was on the russian front, the soviet union did most of the work and not for them i dont think even britian with us canadians and the common wealth would haev been able too stop them from taking all of europe. also hundred days offensive canada and austriala defo lead the tip of that offensive it was quite the time and it did devastate germany and saldy they took all the blame for the war.
@RoverStout they suck? they most certainly do not. if germany and the rest of their alliance had the necessary numbers, the course of history probably would have been different. it was only with the combined strength of russia, france, great britain, the US, and many other countries that germany and austria/hungary and its few allies were able to be defeated in both wars.
@DominionOfTheSword You're mixing up your terms now. WWII Germans did consider themselves a superior race, but hardly God's chosen. That would be a Jewish idea after all, considering they believe themselves to be Yahweh's chosen. I doubt the Germans would volunteer for such a similarity.
@DominionOfTheSword the aryan race was not something that had been established until world war 2. plus, germany faced many powerful enemies in both world wars. they had brilliant tactics and technology but they always lacked the sheer numbers.
@legendarywar1 Aryan was used by racists long before the Nazis, especially in Germany. Germans did not lack numbers in either world war. My point to all the White Supremacists here is that it is just hilarious that you try and put a spin on losing two world wars and still call yourself superior.
@DominionOfTheSword lol, let's sort this out. first of all i'm american, not german. during world war 1 aryanism did not necessarily mean superiority. the term aryan was used to describe germans as being honorable, respectable, and noble. yes, it existed, but not in the context that you have been arguing. and yes, germany did lack the "sheer numbers" i mentioned, where as the allies could send hundreds of thousands/millions of troops to their doom, germany could not.
@legendarywar1 Germans and Austro-Hungarian 'Aryans' had 21 million troops and America, British Empire and France combined had roughly the same. Russia naturally did have a lot of men as usual, but 12 million in that case. I don't think the Americans, Brits or French could be argued as having surplus people. Being British myself there is no shortage of military crosses in most of the now deserted villages of Britain and Ireland where the entire populations were wiped out by losses in that war.
@DominionOfTheSword so 33 million including russia versus 21 million if my math is correct? so the allies have 12 million more soldiers than germany/austria-hungary, and yet you say that that is NOT a surplus of people? history begs to differ.
@legendarywar1 No they are not surplus people, but they are superior numbers yes. Which is why I did the maths and the history for you. Having massive chunks of Britain and Ireland depopulated by the loss of men in the Great War was hardly a sign of surplus people. If Germans lost even to superior numbers surely they aren't such superior beings after all.
@DominionOfTheSword The allies had 42,243,214 mobilized man compare with Central Powers 22,850,000 that is pretty much half of the forces! Central Power never had numerical superioty! Russians always had a huge army that was the point that their army would sever as bulldozer when fully mobilized in Eastern Front this of course didnt happen as the result was a massacre and finaly a revolution.
@legendarywar1 Actualy Aryans comes from the people that are ancestors of modern Europeans with exception of Finno-Uggrics and Basque people that manage to survive that Aryan "invasion" or "migration". So that basicaly means that most people of Europe are aryans. Now some schoolars divided aryans into sub-catogories and one of those was Nordic people there never a point to present them as superior to others after all the suposed Meditterean race created the great empires and civs.
So would be "superior" to the Nordics in matter of civilization. But some schoolars mainly from Anglo Saxon backgrounds from Britain and US took to a all new dimension of preseting them as Superior to all others as the "better aryans" the "pure caucasians" some even took the superioty degree into a level far from Nordics that Anglo Saxons Nordics were even more superior than other Nordics. This is conected to old racism by WASP elites. That pretty rule the Empire and US.
Germans produceded their branch of this Racism and would come to influence NS altough it was rather dull in early days with a lot of mixture of ideas just have to look Hitlers Mein Kampft to see the confusion of ideas that he came out with. And not all aggred on what made an Aryan or German. Rosenberg the supose racial theorist disagree with Himmler and so on.
@jd99germania Well they didnt lose it either.Remember in 1918 not one allied soldier seet foot on German soil! Meanwhile Belgium and half of France was occupied!(not to mention half of Europe in Eastern Front!)
@DominionOfTheSword You considered lost of 50 to 60 milions of human lifes as battered? As a personal game of yours? A child game or video game? Well sir fuck you!
@DominionOfTheSword Germans were not white Supremacists remember most of their persecuted were Whites! Now US and UK were White Supremacists! And for its worth WASP is still the rulling elite of USA.
@ImperialGuard9001 I don't really understand your English and I don't understand your point. Are you saying that whites are the underdogs in the world? Germans even in the Great War were actually fighting for much the same reason as in the 30s and 40s, because they believed they were better than all other human beings. History has proven that to be incorrect.
@DominionOfTheSword I am saing that Germans in WWII didnt persecuted anny blacks or asians or non White races they did persecute Whites tough! It had nothing to do with White Supremacism! Now UK and US have beeen masters of persecuting non whites. After all UK made genocides all over the planet! And US soil was land of another people that was massacred for supremacy of United States.
@Zaharkl ---- Reactions to new weaponry historically include panic, chaos, hysteria. Imagine the first tank coming at you, or the first gas cloud. It still took a pretty good shot to hit a flamethrower I imagine, and for that you'd have to let them get nice and close...
And everybody on YT stills feel sorry for the poor german Huns and nazis. Fuck those criminal bastards . THEY DO NOT DESERVE A COUNTRY THOSE BARBARIC ASSHOLES !
I fell so bad for that poor man who coudlt find a gas mask...imagine you know gas is coming any instant and you can find a mask and you cant leave the trench,u know ull die a horrible death
@ThePimpycat --- Not everyone died instantly from the gas, unfortunately. Some lived in pain for 20 or 30 years, coughing up blood and pieces of their lungs. Living on the streets because they couldn't work. Others: suicide, mental illness: the London serial killer John Christie had been disabled in a gas attack in 1918.
@BombBakers Yes, they did but at the beginning of the war the maskes were like a basket which only protected the nose of the horse but did not cover the eyes. The men on horseback carying the lance with a pennant must be from a "Aufklärungsbataillon" (reconnaissance unit). The lance with the pennant is still the simbol of reconnaissance units in present day German army.
@Camerostamps Thats what the japanese thought and look what happend to them. They lost because they never backed down. What im trying to say that sometimes you need to retreat in order to gain victory.
I would fight to the death if that would do any good but if i could retreat for say 2 miles and gain victory then that is what matters.
this scene with the dying man reminds me of the wilfred own poem 'dulce et decorm est' in which one soldier cannot find his mask and ends up dying in front of the rest of the platoon
He fought in WW1, which is depicted here, and the recent movie indicates he served in WW2.
A decent chunk of this series involves WW1. He is serving with the Belgium army, the unit however is lead by French officers, this is why we have some guys in blue uniforms.
@MrJacobStewart that would've been one of the first times flamethrowers had ever been used, I doubt they'd knew those were gas tanks let alone seen a flamethrower before.
Like what Lt Trenz said, WW1 is the first time "modern" Flamethrowers where used (and by the Germans), this is likely depicting one of the first times they where used, so they would not know what to do. Also your already in a cloud of chlorine and phosgene mixed together, with some mustard lying around, Historically clouds of chlorine gas was said to be nerve wracking to the troops, so add in a new weapon you have never seen before that throws fire... what would you do?
@XXGDUBSXX Imagine if you would have a 9mm pistol and someone would attack you with some lazer machine gun. What could you do? Sometimes it's better to run. You don't fight a battle that is unwinable when you have a choice to fight another day.
@TheIcelandicPatriot uh yeah except it wasn't a "laser machine gun" its a flamthrower thats range is inferior to that of any WWI Rifle. Also if someone atacked me with a "lazer machine gun that doesn't mean a 9mm won't kill him.
@XXGDUBSXX What im trying to say is that this was so alien and new to them. Some soldiers could think these were demons from hell going at them. They did not know what to do, some said flee and the officers did not say no. They lived to fight another day.
If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles. Sun Tzu.
In this case they did not know the enemy. In order to achive victory you must understand the enemy.
why didnt they just shoit them?

if your wondering why they retreated, its because flamethrowers were just introduced in WW1 so many of those men probably hadn't seen them before, so i can imagine its a little scary for them with that humid mask on and flame shooting out of a deadly mist. its easy to say "just shoot back" from a computer

theboxerheads 4 months ago
@theboxerheads its what this show was called before indina jones came out today.
paulproductions2010 4 months ago
@theboxerheads Because its a part of one of the episodes of a TV-series called Young Indiana Jones. It takes place before Indy becomes an archeologist. Some episodes take place when he's a 10 year old kid, some when he's a 18 year old volonteer in the Belgian Army during World War One. And in most episodes he met some famous historical person or tooke part in some historical event.

@cheebs4761 ok russia was not a super power yet nor was the USA tell WW2
doggun15 5 months ago
@doggun15 A country doesn't have to be a super power to affect the outcome of a war. Napolean's massive army was stopped by Russian over 100 years before. Russia had a massive population even in 1917. America was in the industrial revolution. And as I stated before, America had not for the most part been affected by the previous 3 years of war. And lets not forget the same lessons learned by Napolean and Hitler, not a good idea to fight a two front war.

That's the patriotic American version of history!
If you want to know what really happened you'll need to read up on the hundred days offensive! America's role in WW1 was small!
PBSmithy 2 months ago
@PBSmithy America was in every battle that the UK and France were in during that entire offensive, but the bulk of our forces were at the Meuse Argonne forest with the French !
omgwaffels96 2 months ago
@omgwaffels96
PBSmithy 2 months ago
@PBSmithy The UK would have surely been defeated by the nazis with out our help in WW2, as for WW1 the French and UK were getting stomped losing more men there enemy in almost every battle and the Russians backed out because of revolution. I don't see how 2 badly battered armies fighting trench warfare(which has no victor)could possibly suddenly brake the lines of a just as badly battered army in a year with out some fresh troops "cough" "cough" AEF "cough" cough". Fuck you, your dumb !
omgwaffels96 2 months ago
@omgwaffels96
Wow! Tears!
""Your dumb""? Oh, what delicious irony!
PBSmithy 2 months ago
@PBSmithy glad too see such well learned history. defo 80% of the german army in ww2 was on the russian front, the soviet union did most of the work and not for them i dont think even britian with us canadians and the common wealth would haev been able too stop them from taking all of europe. also hundred days offensive canada and austriala defo lead the tip of that offensive it was quite the time and it did devastate germany and saldy they took all the blame for the war.

@jd99germania because they suck, start two world wars, and don't win any of them...
RoverStout 1 month ago
@RoverStout wwi started because Archduke Francis Ferdinand was killed by a Serbian Nationalist
it made Austria and Germany, and a few others declare war against Serbia, France, Britain, and Russia
also, the Central Powers + Axis Powers were outnumbered horribly
in WWII, it was 3 countries against 3 world powers, who the fuck do you think was gonna win that
gtaisawesome87 1 month ago
@RoverStout they suck? they most certainly do not. if germany and the rest of their alliance had the necessary numbers, the course of history probably would have been different. it was only with the combined strength of russia, france, great britain, the US, and many other countries that germany and austria/hungary and its few allies were able to be defeated in both wars.

@Vengrence Yeah but if the Germans are God's chosen people and the supreme race, surely they could have done better.
DominionOfTheSword 1 month ago
@DominionOfTheSword You're mixing up your terms now. WWII Germans did consider themselves a superior race, but hardly God's chosen. That would be a Jewish idea after all, considering they believe themselves to be Yahweh's chosen. I doubt the Germans would volunteer for such a similarity.
Vengrence 1 month ago

DominionOfTheSword 1 month ago
@DominionOfTheSword the aryan race was not something that had been established until world war 2. plus, germany faced many powerful enemies in both world wars. they had brilliant tactics and technology but they always lacked the sheer numbers.
legendarywar1 1 month ago
@legendarywar1 Aryan was used by racists long before the Nazis, especially in Germany. Germans did not lack numbers in either world war. My point to all the White Supremacists here is that it is just hilarious that you try and put a spin on losing two world wars and still call yourself superior.
DominionOfTheSword 1 month ago
@DominionOfTheSword lol, let's sort this out. first of all i'm american, not german. during world war 1 aryanism did not necessarily mean superiority. the term aryan was used to describe germans as being honorable, respectable, and noble. yes, it existed, but not in the context that you have been arguing. and yes, germany did lack the "sheer numbers" i mentioned, where as the allies could send hundreds of thousands/millions of troops to their doom, germany could not.
legendarywar1 1 month ago
@legendarywar1 Germans and Austro-Hungarian 'Aryans' had 21 million troops and America, British Empire and France combined had roughly the same. Russia naturally did have a lot of men as usual, but 12 million in that case. I don't think the Americans, Brits or French could be argued as having surplus people. Being British myself there is no shortage of military crosses in most of the now deserted villages of Britain and Ireland where the entire populations were wiped out by losses in that war.
DominionOfTheSword 1 month ago
@DominionOfTheSword so 33 million including russia versus 21 million if my math is correct? so the allies have 12 million more soldiers than germany/austria-hungary, and yet you say that that is NOT a surplus of people? history begs to differ.
legendarywar1 1 month ago
@legendarywar1 No they are not surplus people, but they are superior numbers yes. Which is why I did the maths and the history for you. Having massive chunks of Britain and Ireland depopulated by the loss of men in the Great War was hardly a sign of surplus people. If Germans lost even to superior numbers surely they aren't such superior beings after all.
DominionOfTheSword 1 month ago
@DominionOfTheSword The allies had 42,243,214 mobilized man compare with Central Powers 22,850,000 that is pretty much half of the forces! Central Power never had numerical superioty! Russians always had a huge army that was the point that their army would sever as bulldozer when fully mobilized in Eastern Front this of course didnt happen as the result was a massacre and finaly a revolution.
ImperialGuard9001 1 month ago
@legendarywar1 Actualy Aryans comes from the people that are ancestors of modern Europeans with exception of Finno-Uggrics and Basque people that manage to survive that Aryan "invasion" or "migration". So that basicaly means that most people of Europe are aryans. Now some schoolars divided aryans into sub-catogories and one of those was Nordic people there never a point to present them as superior to others after all the suposed Meditterean race created the great empires and civs.
ImperialGuard9001 1 month ago
So would be "superior" to the Nordics in matter of civilization. But some schoolars mainly from Anglo Saxon backgrounds from Britain and US took to a all new dimension of preseting them as Superior to all others as the "better aryans" the "pure caucasians" some even took the superioty degree into a level far from Nordics that Anglo Saxons Nordics were even more superior than other Nordics. This is conected to old racism by WASP elites. That pretty rule the Empire and US.
ImperialGuard9001 1 month ago
Germans produceded their branch of this Racism and would come to influence NS altough it was rather dull in early days with a lot of mixture of ideas just have to look Hitlers Mein Kampft to see the confusion of ideas that he came out with. And not all aggred on what made an Aryan or German. Rosenberg the supose racial theorist disagree with Himmler and so on.

@DominionOfTheSword Germans were not white Supremacists remember most of their persecuted were Whites! Now US and UK were White Supremacists! And for its worth WASP is still the rulling elite of USA.
ImperialGuard9001 1 month ago 2
@ImperialGuard9001 I don't really understand your English and I don't understand your point. Are you saying that whites are the underdogs in the world? Germans even in the Great War were actually fighting for much the same reason as in the 30s and 40s, because they believed they were better than all other human beings. History has proven that to be incorrect.
DominionOfTheSword 1 month ago
@DominionOfTheSword I am saing that Germans in WWII didnt persecuted anny blacks or asians or non White races they did persecute Whites tough! It had nothing to do with White Supremacism! Now UK and US have beeen masters of persecuting non whites. After all UK made genocides all over the planet! And US soil was land of another people that was massacred for supremacy of United States.

BombBakers 6 months ago
@BombBakers Yes, they did but at the beginning of the war the maskes were like a basket which only protected the nose of the horse but did not cover the eyes. The men on horseback carying the lance with a pennant must be from a "Aufklärungsbataillon" (reconnaissance unit). The lance with the pennant is still the simbol of reconnaissance units in present day German army.

LtTrenz 7 months ago
@MrJacobStewart
Like what Lt Trenz said, WW1 is the first time "modern" Flamethrowers where used (and by the Germans), this is likely depicting one of the first times they where used, so they would not know what to do. Also your already in a cloud of chlorine and phosgene mixed together, with some mustard lying around, Historically clouds of chlorine gas was said to be nerve wracking to the troops, so add in a new weapon you have never seen before that throws fire... what would you do?
nebfer 7 months ago
@nebfer Shoot at them rather than run.
XXGDUBSXX 6 months ago
@XXGDUBSXX Imagine if you would have a 9mm pistol and someone would attack you with some lazer machine gun. What could you do? Sometimes it's better to run. You don't fight a battle that is unwinable when you have a choice to fight another day.
TheIcelandicPatriot 6 months ago
@TheIcelandicPatriot uh yeah except it wasn't a "laser machine gun" its a flamthrower thats range is inferior to that of any WWI Rifle. Also if someone atacked me with a "lazer machine gun that doesn't mean a 9mm won't kill him.
XXGDUBSXX 6 months ago
@XXGDUBSXX What im trying to say is that this was so alien and new to them. Some soldiers could think these were demons from hell going at them. They did not know what to do, some said flee and the officers did not say no. They lived to fight another day.
If you know the enemy and know yourself you need not fear the results of a hundred battles. Sun Tzu.
In this case they did not know the enemy. In order to achive victory you must understand the enemy.
