Alas, I’ll say it. Something is just not working right with Agalloch’s live sound. It’s not just the "glitch" in this video, it’s the TSOFL dvd in general. It seems to me like both John and Don have problems holding the pitch, every once in a while guitars kind of falter and just don’t run smoothly. Does anyone else notice or feel similar? I’ve been digging live recordings for years now, and however much I love A. and find them to be brilliant artists I’m not too happy with how they sound live.
I was lucky enough to see Agalloch in Cleveland a short time ago and I must say I havent been impressed by any performance since I saw Dead Can Dance many years ago.
I once was recommended a listen to Agalloch, so I listened to this track, Album version of course. I was stunned. My mind was completely boggled. I imagined myself not listening to anything else than Agalloch ever again, but then came the vocals, and I felt so fucking sad that one would ruin a masterpiece with such horrendous sounding vocals.
Yea, I can understand why you would think that, especially if you are not use to black metal in general. To each his/her own, but hopefully you can hear beyond it, or appreciate it, because i think it adds great texture to all of their songs.
@channesw I respect your opinion, but you aren't really stating your opinion when you say "I felt so fucking sad that one would ruin a masterpiece with such horrendous sounding vocals." You just don't like these vocals, it ruins nothing, I love John's vocals, they're very unique and I haven't even heard other black metal bands with his style, I love it personally
Definitely not the most technical advanced players.. but amazing composers!
That's pretty much all that matters to me. I don't really care about live shows.
I'd rather enjoy my music alone, getting a deeper kind of connection to it.
As live musicians, they're quite sloppy and unexperienced. But there are only a few bands which could do an album in the same quality as "Ashes Against The Grain". Even getting near to it is a tough thing to do!
@Soilwar Sloppy? You blind or deaf? The fuckups you hear are called improvisations. You know, things band do to differ their songs from being the same as the studio versions.
@TheGoldblaze: You obviously don't know shit about music, playing instruments and spirits of live concerts. You really are a funny person. I didn't mean the palm mutes in the beginning or so. Bet you don't even know what those are. But anyone with a bit of experience would hear that for example Haughms' rhythms are a bit off sometimes. Thats what I mean when I say "sloppy". Understand? No? That's what I expected. Shut the fuck up anyways buddy. :-]
@TheGoldblaze You can't "improvise" mistakes, and generally speak, improvising is a jazz thing-- NOT metal. Almost any live improv at a metal show will be either effects-based or during a solo, nothing else.
@Soilwar I think the vocalist/guitarist does an amazing job and the durmmer too. Its a mix between the other guitar player and the lack of money to invest on effectc/pedals to sound exactly like in the studio.
@Soilwar thanks man for saying that aloud. im a huge agalloch "fan", but i was rather disappointed and underwhelmed with most of their live renditions. it is really weird that john's vocals seem to be spot on, and yet his guitar work is fallacious and simply skewed from where-the-song-should-be-going. the difference between you and i though is that i DO care about live shows and agalloch kind of dropped down on my personal favs list after i heard their live dvd. unfortunately.
@veca83: Oh, that's kinda.. sad. Really. :-( I gotta say, though.. now that I live in a BIG city.. I tend to care way more for live gigs than before. Still hope to see them someday, 'cause "practise" makes perfect, I guess. ;) I really think you shouldn't judge them that hard for their live performances or is it more an emotional thing rather than a rational one? Cheers, dude.
@soil thanx for reply. i live in a small ass city (Sarajevo, Bosnia), and i managed to get to see only a handful of bands live in concert, so i'm mostly making my opinions on carefully listened bootlegs/live dvds of the bands that amazed me with their studio recordings. but, hey, i'm not putting down agalloch in any way, theyr'e amazing, i just think they have to improve with their live sound, which they will with their subsequent tours, i'm sure:) it's just a matter of practice and experience:)
@veca83: Yeah, it's kinda the same with Katatonia. Don't know if you know them.. I love this band - amazing composers, but still very unsteady live performance qualities. Got one Katatonia live dvd, which I love.. but I saw 'em as a starter for Porcupine Tree and it was.. more than horrible to be honest. So many fuck ups.. sound was just a pain. It's really weird how some of the most special bands lack live quality.
@Soilwar you are absolutely right about the amazing katatonia. one of my favorite bands, but very messy and uneven live! when they do hit all the right notes they are amazing, but many of their songs leave a lot to be desired and teem with flaws. it just goes to show that the art of live performance is the one that is difficult to master, and also a skill completely different from composition. even the best composers may lack performing skills. rarely does one find a band as perfect as opeth:)
@veca83: Haha, we seem to have the same taste in music & the same opinion about bands as well. Sending first friend request. :D I totally agree about Opeth. Gonna see them live in december, will be awesome for sure. Have seen 'em live before and my neck was in pain the days after since they played "Deliverance", lol! Will try to film the concert in HD, or at least a couple of songs. Do you listen to Porcupine Tree also? They are just PERFECT live musicians imo & the sound is a blast.
That intro didn't achieve the same effect as it does recorded at all. Also, during the build up, the second guitar is different, and there is another part with an added note. Honestly, I think all three changes subtracted from the impact of the song, but this is still pretty decent. Underwhelming, but I expected this band to be better on album anyway.
In my opinion music like this is nothing for live stages. You have to enjoy these atmospheres alone, in total silence aside from puking, beer drinking metalhead kiddies and bad live sound. Just my 2 cents, this band is awesome neverthless.
The intro definitely does not achieve the same effect but this is the only way I see them being able to get even close to playing it right without using a backing track.

@swedishDMjosh This is not black metal... but, a lot of Black Metal, "traditional" black metal, have slow songs.

@channesw When I first got into metal I hated the growled vocals too. It took me some time to get used to it, but it grew on me and now I love it !
Speaking about this Agalloch song, I think the vocals definitely add to it :)
