If you have seen the show live, as I have, I have got to say that Ashley Brown is flawless as Mary Poppins. Her performance was absolutely believeable and I was brought to tears at several points! I LOVED her - she IS Mary Poppins!!!

#1 I never said I could do better. And when you said "this is when they first started" if that was alluding to how she has gotten better that shouldn't happen she should be at her top performance level when they open (when the Tony Awards committee sees the show)not 4 months into the run. As for the dialect... there is ALWAYS need for a dialect coach on any show... & while her accent IS English... it's just not very good.

Have you seen the movie? Or read the books? Mary Poppins IS a bitch, in drawings from the books she is never drawn with anything but a hint of a smile and in the movie she is far from being nice. Also Mary is English which Ashley is clearly not judging from her horrible attempt at an accent (not her fault at all, she should have had a dialect coach)

I saw the show in December and did love it, but I think the role was a little too much for Ashley. She was ok, but for someone playing Mary Poppins you need to be knocked in the aisles. Everything else about the show is fantastic.

Sutton Foster wouldn't be right for this show because she carries herself much younger, less Nanny and more Ingenue.

A few little lines here and there, like during the bank scene the final prospect says he has business plans in "Latin America" instead of "North America" and things like that. But there were also some HUGE changes, like the "Jolly Holiday" choreography and set (and a few lines in the song). They made it a lot more colorful to be both more jolly, more like the movie, and (let's face it) more Broadway.

Ashley is a friend of mine, and like her we both studied musical theatre, and have to take IPA, which is theatre speech. So technically, her accent is just fine for stage standards.
