Sydney FC - Premiers and Champions of the A-League 2009/10. Both victories against Melbourne. Premiers Plate won in Sydney. Champions Ring won in Melbourne. Kevin Muscat missing a crucial penalty in the penalty shootout.
I liked Tommy Leonetti. He had a really friendly & easy going personality but I think that when he composed this song, he got mixed up with Philadelphia or some place in the USA. Sydney is an anachronism; an old city in a new country, bastardly planned, full of eccentrics, some friendly souls, others possessing a pervasive attitude of bloody-mindedness. A culture of footie and Tooth's lager with the world's most scenic Harbour. It's not Tony Bennett's San Francisco or Judy Garland's St. Louis.
SYDNEY need to be cleaned up. Period. Some corners are really disgusting and filthy. Loonies roaming the city. Pavements full of pigeons dropping. Reaked of urine and alcohol. Some suburbs are even worse than third world countries. Dirty, smelly trains. And all the Council cares about is promotion of gay rights. Pfft.
This was the Channel 7 close down song - brings back very fond memories for me andwill forever. Sydney was a 'town' back in 1969..it has grown and lost a bit of its soul - but the harbour will never change. It still has a lot of its old characters they can tell you so much...YES it should be the football anthem!!! oh and for the record I had my communion with Tommy Leonettis daughter in 1970..bit of trivia
Thank you for posting Brings back so many warm memories Reminds me of just before bedtime as a kid when channel 7 would play it as they closed for the night
My City of Sydney was sung By Tommy Leonetti. He lived in Sydney many years ago and even hosted a Tonight Show on TV. Unfortunately he passed away some years ago. Hope this helps.
Further trivia, his daughter was on Friday the 13th; The Final Chapter (1984) and together they wrote that song "Let's Take a Walk" a number one hit for about 26 weeks.
He was also an American, which makes it kinda nicer, for an outsider to embrace the city so much that he wrote a song about it even when he was "thousands of miles from the surfers and smiles...".
I remember this song being played as a kid, when ch.7 used to shutdown broadcasting for the night. People would wait till the song was finished before switching the TV off.
im going out to austyralia for 5 months backpacking in january and im flying to sydney and staying there for 3-4 weeks and i just wanna know where the best places are to go!! can anyone help me please?

hi,im an aussie living in beijing, china.i remember this being on t.v. everynight in the 70's and 80's on channel 7 at the end.special place sydney is,or was?everytime i go back, something changes a little, usually not for the good.although watching this almost brings a tear to the eye, sydney will always be there.very expensive city nowadays...not as safe as it once was...people are rude for no reason...most of the youth/teens are mentally ill!!! my city of sydney.
not a Sydney FC fan but on the night before I left Sydney to live elsewhere I heard this song, its an absolute tearjerker. Hope this song works well for the Cove.
Anyone who has lived in Sydney for years and used to se the Ch 7 sign off at night will identify with this...it's an awesome song and I cannot beleive no other football code has cottoned-on..

I love Sydney, and even though I'm only an hour up the coast by train, I get this song just as much as the poor guy whose thousands of miles away.
