Actually no. The current restoration team's head, was given the option (back in the 90s) to restore the Parthenon to its original state, but refused for various reasons. One of them being that, the monument would "lose" it's significance, and another that the original marble query is almost depleted.

yeah, the greeks are dumbasses for adopting christianity (or being forced into in anyway..). it's unbelievable that people can be christians in this country when hundreds of monuments were vandalised by christians. It's not because of it that the greek civilization eventually discontinued being "glorious", it's that much part of its heritage got destroyed by christianity.. To this day there are 1000s of churches built on top of ancient temples. Hard to swallow (I'm greek myself)

I can tell you guys that the parthenon was built in 432 BC and although its age it is still modern, still great, beatiful and without any flaws of construction just like the ancient egyptian buildings. So try to compare it to the modern pieces of junk that appered in the 20th century. The modern buildings seem to be older than the parthenon even though they are more recent. That is why the parthenon is a CLASSIC.

Some more architectural detail could be added. On the Parthenon, the end columns would have had sightly closer spacing. And the column fluting itself are too wide.

I know I go against the prevailing restoration ethic..but I think there is enough solid information about the Parthenon, that it could and should be reconstructed some day...with new material supplementing the old where required.

You're quite a history buff. Didn't the idea of a republic (like our form of gov.) come from the Greeks? I guess the Romans started out with a republic, but went to a monarchy after Ceasar was assasinated. I recently heard that Rome prospered because of their republic form of gov. but they went downhill when they discarded that system.

@zliminator Rome actually started as a monarchy, then became a republic, then reverted back to monarchy. However, it wasn't monarchy that sent Rome downhill. Prosperity and power did in fact increase under the emperors (even under the bad ones). In the end, Rome was brought down by a multitude of reasons (corruption, external enemies, decay of the military system, and debasement of currency, exacerbated by economic stagnation (which, amazingly, was mandated by law)).
